The "surprise" you refer to is, in most respects, an actual surprise. I think we all acknowledge that different people have different tastes, and not everyone is going to like the same things we do. But why is it bad to express surprise that films we love seem not to get other people excited?

Sure, I understand that there are people who aren't interested in My Darling Clementine, but that doesn't stop me from saying "What? Are you insane?!" when someone expresses that lack of interest.
I would also wager that at least some of the people who say "meh, nothing for me" probably haven't seen or even heard of some of the titles announced, so in all honesty, they probably don't know if there's anything for them or not. The fact that they haven't seen all the films precludes their opinions on them, and think that if they haven't seen it, then it must not be worth owning.

Agreed. Also there's something to be said for having a quirky, short-lived package configuration sitting in your collection. Maybe it's just me. LOL

That said, I do prefer the sleek, thinner BD packaging. But I will cherish my funky-chunky Lloyd, Bergman, Hitchcock, and Beatles.

King Lear would be great, or Sauve qui peut (La Vie).
There used to be rumors that Le Petit Soldat was next. Good film.

What the combo packs were meant to do was help those who haven't gone blu to smooth the transition, but it didn't work quite as planned. (Also, some sets are monsters in size as a result.) Criterion explained: http://www.criterion.com/current/posts/3195-re-format
The school thing is an issue and will stay one for awhile. I'm at quite a big technological university, and if I want to show a film in class, it has to be DVD format. The problem isn't the player (they cost practically the same now, and we don't lack for money), but it's bandwidth on the network. The signal goes from the classroom computer to a server to the projector rather than directly computer to projector, and the network can't handle a blu-ray signal. I'm guessing this is an issue at other schools if it's an issue at mine.

Any Ingmar Bergman upgrade
Any Wong Kar Wai film
Any Yasujiro Ozu upgrade
It would definitely be a special month if any of the above being announced, especially another Ozu.

I just watched Late Spring recently; every time I watch any of his films it becomes my favorite of his filmography.

So disappointed when I click on a new Criterion announcement and Ghost World isn't included.

Easily my most anticipated Blu Ray release. Hopefully it is released sooner than later and hopefully from Criterion.

It's a film I'd love to see get a spine as well. Oh well, I suppose my DVD will have to suffice until that glorious day. :/

I've only seen Late Spring and Tokyo Story, but I think both are excellent films. Also, I think Wim Wenders' documentary, Tokyo Ga, included with Late Spring, is phenomenal.

You and me both. It's a hilarious film and it really took me by surprise.

I don't see why Criterion wouldn't release it, but if they don't, I hope another studio does right around the corner.

Are you sure you don't mean defensive, offended or put off as opposed to surprised? I do think that's a common kneejerk reaction to opposing viewpoints in general, and likewise I think it's common to form preconceptions/biases (however irrational) about those that don't share our view/taste, but surprise? I'm not buying the "commonality" of that one, nothing personal. I'd argue (negative) bias towards an opposing viewpoint is common, while surprise at the very existence of an opposing viewpoint is, uh, "kooky"

So just to be clear...

Let's say I were to strike up a conversation with a stranger browsing the Criterion section of my local Barnes and Noble. Granted, the chances of that happening are virtually nil but let's say it does. And let's say we start discussing the October slate. Are you saying it would be 'kooky' of me to be even mildly surprised if somebody browsing Criterions showed absolutely no interest in any of those titles?

Or put differently, if you had to bet on whether or not such a person would show at least some interest in at least one of those titles how would you bet?

Would you just flip a coin?

Or would one outcome seem more likely to you than the other?

You should take a look at Early Summer and An Autumn Afternoon they are both excellent too and are available in HD on Hulu.

Hopefully one of those is next when the time comes for more Ozu

Sweet holy christ almighty, I was on set when I saw the announcements and had to hold myself back from yelling when I saw La Dolce Vita among the titles.
Been waiting so long to see this get a release from Criterion
Then throw on the Tati set and My Darling Clementine on top of that?
Hands down my favorite month this year so far!
Can't wait to see what they pull out of their bag next month considering November always seems to be when they save their biggest titles for

Outstanding line-up this year. Bellocchio, Kieslowski, Petri, Ferreri... Fantastic

Many of these, if not all, should come out on Blu-ray. A few are already in the pipeline

Pro-B
Not to mention The Tales of Hoffmann! Let's hope this presages a BD

The latter is undergoing a real renaissance at the moment, thanks to Michael Witt's efforts to get the reconstructed cut out there. I saw it theatrically just a few weeks ago. It's an easy sell too (in its original form at least), and amongst Godard's most accessible work. With Adieu au langage on the horizon it seems like a shame that Criterion isn't capitalising.

Au contraire, it's a film which rewards greatly on second viewing. I won't say any more for spoiling anything.

Also at the risk of SPOILERS, it's an ending that will either leave you saying "Ah, that Welles, what an innovative rule-breaking rebel", or "Well, in that case, what the hell did I just waste my time WATCHING for the last 90 minutes?? "
(I often found myself in the latter category.)

Fortunately, Criterion's writeup seems to have already worked that in as the whole artistic "point", for their "He, er, meant to do that" angle.

The folks at home get it, you don't like the film.
