If you're getting your feet wet with Criterion titles, I'd recommend

La Dolce Vita
Wild Strawberries
Fat Girl (why so much hate for this one..... I'll never know)
Revanche

A couple examples from both "more recent" and "more classic" pieces of cinema......

I'd actually recommend Hunger over Revanche. Not to detract anything from Revanche, but Hunger is AMAZING.

I wouldn't. Hunger was pedantic, predictable, and just what I thought it would be and likely a title Criterion would have never touched had it not been part of the IFC deal. Revanche is superior in all ways.

In fact, as long as you are open to foreign cinema I think its one of the best titles to turn someone on to the CC.

I find it hard to believe that you could dock a film based on historic fact predictable. Sounds like you're just reaching for pejorative words to throw at something you didn't like and be a contrarian for the sake of it, especially in this quote "just what I thought it would be". Sounds like you pretty much didn't want to like the film before you even saw it. What was that you were saying about having an open mind? I never said Revanche was inferior, calm down. I was simply adding another title to the list of recommendations. I loved both films. Relax and get your blood pressure back down

I didn't want to go into detail as its been discussed to death over at criterionforum.org and other websites. Its forgettable and over rated. Not something that sticks out as anything but a mediocre IFC film that is worth checking out but not owning or using as an example of what a great CC title is to start with.

It's several days later and there is no sign my Criterion order from Deep Discount is anywhere close to even being shipped. And most of them are in stock. Why oh why do I bother with them anymore...

Just got home from a Criterion release party for Mystery Train. Before the film started Lee Kline and Susan Arosteguy discussed the production of the disc and its supplements. As well as answering questions about the Collection in general. Susan confirmed that The Darjeeling Limited is currently in production, but didn't mention any specific timeframe for a release.

I asked how they determined which films were simultaneously released on Blu-ray and DVD and which were released only on DVD. Lee mentioned that it costs 7-8 times more (I believe that's the number) to release a film on Blu-ray compared to a DVD release. He also mentioned how initially Criterion was concerned with the strength of the format, but with more and more customers requesting Blu-ray releases, they are attempting to release more films on both formats simultaneously. One final thing he mentioned was that if it was up to him, they would do away with DVD and release everything on Blu-ray alone.

I went into the film more or less blindly and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. There were a few scenes that felt a little slow, but overall it held my attention. I was also given a Blu-ray of the film signed by Jim Jarmusch.

Sounded like you had a good time.

If I was there I would of asked about the New Hollywood Boxset instead of Darjeeling, whoever asked that, but that's just me.

I don't think that was ever rumored for Criterion or had insiders telling people.

Just watched Monsoon Wedding for the first time. Can anyone tell me why the audio switched back and forth between English and Hindi (even with the same character, between sentences). I just found it very odd. Is that common in the culture? Or was it to appease English speaking audiences?

Since criterion is doing the replacement case thing now, does anyone know if for example, I were to buy Bottle Rocket on blu ray from amazon, if it would be in the replacement snap case or in the original case?
