I own it but have not yet watched it. I'm not the kind of person who needs all his movies to be happy and peppy and upbeat but some movies have a harder time than others making it past the 'am I really in the mood for this tonight' hurdle.

It kind of bums me out that some of these classic westerns (Red River, High Noon, Rio Grande, My Darling Clementine) are black and white. I cannot think of any genre of film moreso than Westerns that NEED to be shot in color! I feel that the Western film was meant to be shown in color because of its huge emphasis on scenery and location! At least if Red River wasn't in 1:37 ratio, it would be better, just so the viewer can see the wide vistas and landscape of the country and locations.

Would you agree?
Don't know about Owl, but I don't really agree. Ford shot Fort Apache and Rio Grande in black-&-white, but in between these two, he shot She Wore a Yellow Ribbon in Technicolor. And while it does look dazzling, I can't honestly say that the other two look at all wanting for their lack of color.

The case for using widescreen is better, but in the case of Red River, it was made seven years before the widescreen format became a regular thing. One can argue that King Kong or The Wizard of Oz might've looked better in widescreen, too, but it's a rather moot point.

glad kurosawa used widescreen for sanjiro and yojimbo. if kurosawa could use widescreen so well for his "western" i think it could have been usefull for other western movies as well

Man, tear that plastic open ASAP and watch that classic Scorcese movie TONIGHT!!!! It's one of the most moving/ferocious films I've seen. Personally I don't find it a difficult movie to watch, but that scene with Dafoe in the desert is just unreal.

But on the other hand, he didn't use widescreen for Seven Samurai, and I'm not sure that it would be a better movie if it had been in widescreen.

Even if Red River was in 1:50 or 1:66 or 1:85 it would have been better than 1:37 (!). I would have taken anything more than that. Oh well, no use grumbling about it.

The Right Stuff (and maybe For All Mankind) are on tap for tonight what with the 45th anniversary of the moon landing and all

Speaking of which, I'm about 2/3rds of the way through the Discovery Channel's When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions and it's really good.

His performances in Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein are hilariously entertaining, I really hope Criterion upgrades them to BD someday.

maybe they didnt have the equip at toho at that time. would have been more expensive? (film stock?) no idea. but i love how kurosawa uses every inch of the widescreen format. there is no unused room etc...

and his use of multiple stuff happening in the front while there is a whole set in the background. thats just amazing.

If you like that sort of thing, absolutely.

I've only watched A Woman Under the Influence, Chinese Bookie and Faces and they've all got a rough, stream of consciousness feel to them that isn't for everybody but if you like that kind of indie, experimental, let's just see where this goes style of filmmaking then yeah, these are very good.

Well, even the matted widescreen ratios weren't around at the time (with some notable exceptions). At any rate, Red River is more of a character drama than a "sprawling vista" movie, so the Academy Ratio seems right.

Sound slick something I would enjoy, especially great performances (WUTI).

Will have a little look at this set

Oh, I didn't mean to suggest that Kurosawa didn't embrace the widescreen format for all that he's worth. But even after the introduction of the various widescreen formats, he made specific ratio choices for his movies. Hell, he even went back to 1.33:1 for Dodes'kad-den!

And my point was that Seven Samurai was just as finely composed a film as any of his widescreen efforts, and I'm not convinced that a wider image would've made it a better movie. I suppose one could try to compare the widescreen imagery of The Magnificent Seven against it, but would just be silly.

I think I might pull out the HBO mini-series From the Earth to the Moon. Wish it was on Blu-ray.
