On the website, I don't think it works for Criterions, just listed titles of other dvds. So I'm just going to wait until next month for hopefully a July 50% sale.

first off, a lady at my local b and n said that around july 16th it should happen, they got the call, it's just not confirmed as 50% off yet. also, with bing.com you can get the secret of the grain for 19.99 at bestbuy.com. probably a mistake on their part, but worth a try for now. with the bing.com 20% cashback right now, the shipping you have to pay is cancelled out, thus getting it at about b and n prices during the sale....

I don't have "Bing" but will probably buy it for $20 plus shipping/tax anyways.

Default Recommend movies for starting my Criterion collection

I've never bought a Criterion-released movie but I would like to start a collection. Can someone recommend me some of their releases to start?

Let's say that I'm open to all the genres produced by Criterion. Some art-house movies would be nice to experiment with.

Well, one more mainstream movie that they released that I'd recommend is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Great movie, great visual quality, and a very in-depth making of that goes into many aspects of the film and is almost more interesting than the movie itself. The features are especially good if you are interested in how they created the aging effects for the characters.

Unfortunately this is the only one I own, so I can't really recommend any others, or compare them for that matter. Another good thing about this particular release is that it should be easier to find and a bit cheaper than other Criterion releases.

Shouldn't your collection be based on the films and the filmmakers, not the company distributing them

where did he say he wasn't considering the film or filmmaker? I thought he asked us for the names of films?

While reading the existing content in this thread may not be beneficial to you, this would be the most appropriate place to ask this question, as those participating in this thread on a regular basis (there are many) have a great deal of exposure to this particular studio, and you are more likely to find opinions formulated based on multiple titles viewed, rather than a few......

It might depend on your prefered style of movie? There are a few people are who enjoy everything Criterion releases, others (like me) will buy certain movies and rent the others and other only get the ones they truly want.

I might suggest The Seventh Seal on Blu-ray by Ingmar Bergman. It may not be the easiest movie to start with but it will give you some idea what are the genre of movies Criterion releases. They offer a chance to get and see movies that would not be available otherwise since they would not attract a large audience. If you wish to start with something easy then the movies of Akira Kurosawa would be a good place to start. It's fair to say he is one of the most accessible director on Criterion. If you want to jump right in you may want to try Jean Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Yasurijo Ozu or Federico Fellini. I am sure many others could give you suggestion. All I can say is enjoy yourself and be prepare to see some truly amazing movies.

They got the rights before they started blu-ray. Alot of people wants it on blu, so e-mail them the suggestion and they could prob get the blu rights from all of the feedback they will get on it.

The only dvd that I wonder why wasn't on blu this year is Dillinger is Dead, just because the "sister" company Janus owns the theatrical rights and usually means a Criterion release is after, not having to ask a studio for the blu rights. It even has a restored HD transfer. Every other dvd only release this year has been from studios or weak transfers.

Default Barnes and Noble B2G1

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I just stopped by my B&N and the lady confirmed that ALL titles (including Criterion) qualify for B2G1 in-store.

Most films had a sticker percentage off the title. Criterions only had 10% off = $36 (from $40). That comes to $36*2 = $72 for 3 Criterions or $24 each before tax. I balked and will wait for a better sale, but was tempted

Im going to go with some of the more less know titles. As I feel that most of the treasures of the collection rest outside the realm of blu. Plus you should just check out their website and browse through the movies and just pick a couple to get through netflix or just buy. Part of the greatness of Criterion is discovering movies that you know nothing about or that someone has not told you to see.

Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters

When A Woman Ascends the Stairs

...And God Created Women

Port of Shadows

and prolly my favorite blu

Last Year at Marienbad
