I think that The Insider and Collateral are his best, with Heat and then Thief. I did love the soundtrack to Thief by Tangerine Dream; their soundtrack to Risky Business is one of my favorites ever.

Favorite Michael Mann films?

I'm going to go with Heat, Thief, and Manhunter.

I would love for Manhunter to be picked up by Criterion.

I'm a big fan of it (would probably go as far as to call it the best film ever made). The runtime suits the picture, plus the extensive extras round out the package.

Miami Vice. I loved it on release, but was sold on it as his best after seeing it as a part of the Cinematheque Francaise's Mann retrospective in 2009. Controversial I know, but I think his second life in the digital age has been fascinating.

Thief is my second favourite, followed by Collateral. I'm a big fan of most of his work tho.

If Heat was released by Criterion that would be really awesome. But it's Warner Bros, so it's a no go.

Kinda off topic: I think the shootouts in Thief, Heat and Collateral sound a lot better than Miami Vice (which I love) don't get me wrong, its a great film and I am a major Mann fan but IMO they just chose the wrong time to play "In the air tonight" which really drowned out that awesome Mannly shootout. Plus that song works only as a driving montage and not a shootout.

In Heat if you play that shootout with a great surround sound system it rattles your insides and I fear having the cops called due to "shots being fired"

A few people on youtube have actually corrected the scene and took out the terrible numetal band from it.

On topic: Brazil and Fear and Loathing is almost here and I cannot wait!

Miami Vice is a criminally underrated film. It's my fourth favorite Mann film behind the three that I listed above.

I own the existing Blu-ray of Miami Vice, and it's a wonderful presentation.

Miami Vice is a great film, but the theatrical cut is far superior as a film in my eyes. The UK theatrical blu is region free and is the way to go.

Mannhunter really ruined the complete Lecter (Universal) series for me, none of them can compete with Mannhunter and if they released it on Criterion I'd double dip in a heartbeat.

Woah. How could I forget Collateral? It's no The Insider or Heat but it is certainly better than Thief.

I think The Silence of the Lambs is a masterful film (one that hits all the right notes), but Manhunter is totally on par with it on a film making stand point.

Red Dragon and Hannibal --- I put my blinders on when those films are mentioned. I want to erase any memory of them. They were not up to snuff, IMO.

Keep in mind that, when I say that the presentation is wonderful, I'm saying that the Blu-ray of Miami Vice is a great representation of what I saw in the theater.

Here's the official site review of Miami Vice...
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Miami-Vice-Blu-ray/832/

The movie may look a little off by Blu-ray demo disc standards, because of the rough-around-the-edges feel of the HD video that was used to shoot the movie. The Blu-ray presentation is faithful to that.

Absolutely. I think the everything about Manhunter is perfect from Creepy Tom Noonan to Brian Cox to the Tangerine dream soundtrack.

I did like the "Do you see" scene in Red Dragon.

Watched Judex last night. A really cool, stylish film. I enjoyed it, definitely worth a blind buy. Has a lot of replay value. Gonna have to give it a second view soon.

That got me thinking, what's everyone's most watched Criterion? Mine would have to be La Haine. Just love the film. Can't get enough of the three character's. Vincent Cassell is great as usual. I would urge anyone that hasn't picked it up to do so.

I will say that Emily Watson is wonderful in Red Dragon given the weak script. That's my only compliment.

I think that The Silence of the Lambs is an excellent film, but Manhunter was the one that I saw first, and Brian Cox was my introduction to Hannibal Lector.

I will confess that 1980s nostalgia elevates Manhunter to a new level for me, because I was a huge fan of the Mann-produced Miami Vice television series at the time, and I instantly loved how Manhunter shared the look and vibe of that series. The music in Manhunter is quite amazing as well.

Hannibal is one of my least favorite movies of all time. I had been looking forward to it, because I quite enjoyed the Thomas Harris novel, but this film adaptation is a textbook example of how studio compromise can wreck a vision. The filmmakers try to water down the disturbing conclusion of the Harris novel, but, by doing so, they make it even more sickening, because the philosophy of the novel is lost on the viewer of the film.
