Amen to this Tin Drum. There is just a slew of worthy titles that have not seen the light of day on Blu-ray here.

My Spanish is good enough to order tacos, to compose an email, or to translate basic conversations, but that is only if I have the time to think. I have a much harder time keeping up if I have to listen to it.

What are the chances that we get a Criterion rerelease of The Third Man anytime soon? I'm debating whether I should hold out and cross my fingers, or suck it up and get the OOP release. And yeah, I know that there is a cheaper release available. I'm just OCD. Lol

It's always possible that Criterion will get the rights back to The Third Man, but I doubt very much that it'll be any time soon.

I'd still hold out and cross your fingers. That's what I'm doing. No single Blu-ray disc is worth $125 and up.

On a related note, I saw that the OOP release of Playtime went for $20.49 on ebay recently. So, if there are people holding onto OOP titles as some kind of investment, that is potentially a bad idea.

And apparently no criterion is worth the MSRP as well.

Isn't every investment potentially a bad idea?

That could have something to do with the fact that Playtime is being re-released as part of the Tati set.

I finally got round to watching my BD of Breathless - first time seeing it since a 16mm screening at a film club back in the 80s. What an exhilarating film! Loved the pace and the editing and the milieu of 60s Paris always gets me. Fascinating how you can sympathise with Belmondo's character despite how badly he behaves.

Great set of supplements on the disk too. And the digipack (this is the original single disk release) is simply gorgeous - I for one hope they keep releasing these when they switch back to BD only.

Finally, a big thumbs up for the stunning menu design!

Definitely is. Although I think it should be pointed out that the cover art will be changed, so it still has that value as an OOP (for what it's worth).

for collectible items? most definitely. just ask the people who bought hundreds of beanie babies... or in the 80's when articles were being written that baseball cards were becoming the new stocks.

I'd say it has everything to do with this and that's my point.

Isn't the original Salo release a sought out item for collectors? Even though it is garbage transfer?

Guess so haha

A few months ago, I purchased a "Used - Like New" out-of-print Criterion Blu-ray of The Third Man from a third-party Amazon dealer for $75, after someone here tipped me off to the sale. I also paid $60 for a "Used - Like New" copy of Pierrot Le Fou.

I have no regrets about either purchase. I have boundaries for how much I want to spend on a Blu-ray, of course, but anything below twice the MSRP is a decent find for an out-of-print Criterion title in my book.

For what it's worth, though, the StudioCanal release isn't half bad, and it's definitely worth $10 if that's your only reasonable option.

I collect for personal enjoyment. Weather it's Criterions or movie posters (my other passion) it's because I like owning them. If they happen to go up in value that's just icing on the cake.

I've bought 12 movies so far in this B&N sale, and I have to say that I'm very pleased with all of Criterion's packaging choices whether plastic case or digipak. They all look great.
I've been dragging my feet on "Persona" only because I thought I might wait until the next sale. That brings me to my question. Did I understand someone to say that the packaging on "Persona" is changing to a plastic case? That is one digipak that I think looks particularly classy, and I think I would prefer that packaging on that movie. If it is going to a plastic case I may have to shell out sooner to get that one.

I watched The Vanishing on Hulu last night. I hadn't seen it for quite a while and had forgotten just how haunting it was. I'm really looking forward to Oct. for it.

Like you, I don't mind shelling out $80 or less for an OOP criterion title, but I will try and get them as close to retail as possible. When it's $100+, I really have to think on it. If I were to pay that much for a OOP title, The Third Man would be the one. But, I know that if I do pull the trigger, Criterion will announce a re-release. That's just how I roll. Lol Thankfully, all of the OOP blu-ray titles are still obtainable for $40-$80, except for The Third Man and TMWFTE.

And I would agree that THE reason that Playtime is dropping in price, is because of the re-release in Oct.. That title I didn't pick up and didn't worry about, because if I remember right, there was talk of an upcoming re-release, shortly after it went OOP.

Totally agree. I would never buy in OOP blu-ray that is priced above 40 dollars, especially when there is a great alternative.

The Third Man criterion version is marginally better than the studio canal version. If you have a 70 inch screen or have an awesome projector with a room built like a movie theater, then maybe it will be worth it.

I am glad criterion does not have the same business strategy as TT, who cater the second hand blu-ray scalpers (they sell the blu-rays for 75 to 100 dollars). I am proud to say I have not bought any of their blu-rays.
