It will be great that we can Criterion blu of Soft Skin and Two English Girls. My MK2 DVD need major upgrade.

Anyone cares to comment?
Given that it's the 30th Anniversary of Truffaut's death in October I'm quite surprised that we haven't had an announcement for that month. I speculated that the complete Antoine Doinel cycle would have been a timely upgrade for release alongside Boyhood prior to the October announcements (and prior to the comments from Linklater that Boyhood was definitely forthcoming). Fingers crossed for November.

some of the kurosawa releases look already pretty good at Hulu in "HD".
wish criterion would upgrade these faster... Red Beard would be amazing..

same for Dodeskaden , looked already really good at hulu.. and had nice colors.

they are probably gonna release "the bad sleep well" next.. i just got the DVD a few days ago

but considering the amaunt of Ozu and Naruse movies (some in "HD") , i would love to see a upgrade here.

Rififi might be a good fit for you.

I am going to try my luck with 3 more titles using the $8 off coupon. I was thinking about getting Rules of the Game(watched once already and thought it was just okay but feel like i need to rewatch it), Jules and Jim, High and Low and/or Pale Flower.
My Favorite Criterion films to date that I have watched are Vivre sa Vie, all of the Noir and Revanche. Here is my current collection: http://www.criterion.com/my_criterio...386/collection
there's no limits on posts! pick, pick, pick away (our brains, that is)

I meant to address your question about Hulu stream quality. Occasionally, things seem to look just as good as a blu-ray. Other times, (like when I watched The Great Beauty) I was certain that there was no chance in hell that the stream quality would match what is on the disc. And still other times, (as in the case of Purple Noon,) we have a movie that is available in blu-ray, but only has a standard def stream.

And, (sorry because I mentioned this before,) if your internet connection gets a little weak even for a minute, you are looking at images that are probably on par with a VHS tape. THAT, to me is distracting - even more so than a bit of overzealous DNR, or other types of blu-ray faults that we nitpick and obsess over.

So my end verdict? No way is it good enough.

hulu got a buffer.. you probably would have to own a pretty slow internet connectiion to run into problems. im using it from germany, trough a proxy and never run into trouble. even the HD streams work fine.

hulu is fine but there is no way in hell that it actually is able to compete with a bluray that has bitrates that are 28-35mbit/s.

i have a 16mbit connection (1,6MB download max) and never run into trouble with hulu. so it must be below these 16mbit.

Thank you for your detailed response. My question with hulu mainly pertained to older black and white films like Rules of the Game and others where hulu looks like garbage but when looking at screenshots of the blu it doesn't look significantly better. And then some other black and whites that I have checked out and look pretty good on hulu I wasn't sure how much better they would look. Color films without a doubt I feel that there will be noticeable differences, I was just unsure about older films that receive less than 4.7 on picture quality on their review, if those movies did not necessarily look significantly better on blu. Once again thanks for the detailed response it was certainly helpful.

Can anyone give me their two cents on Repo Man? (like Thief) It's another movie I haven't seen get much attention. All i really know is that it's a punk movie. For me it's between this and Thief.

I don't have either in my collection, but if I had to choose, I would go with Repo Man. Thief is a stylish neo-noir. Repo Man is much harder to categorize -- there really isn't anything else like it. It's fun, edgy, re-watchable, and quotable. And, oh yeah, Harry Dean Stanton.

yeah, I'd say it's a mixed bag.

re: B&W films...

I did watch Wild Strawberries on Hulu and I would say that it resembled a hi-def transfer.

there are a number of other problems I have with Hulu, however, that kept me from keeping it for longer than a month. e.g. no subtitles for (some) English language films, film selection beyond the CC titles, having to find a spot where I left off and buffering, too.

I know that last point would seem to have to do w/ my internet connection, but for some reason this certain issue was exclusive to Hulu and did not present any issues for me when using Netflix.

Nothing like Thief. Its more along the lines of a campy cult classic that would probably get most of its traction from small indie theaters if I were released today. Its got a Pee Wee's playhouse "**** it all" kinda vibe and full of zany "out there" characters.

Also, I'm remembering that the audio commentary for Repo Man was fun to listen to. The commentators seemed to be having a good time reminiscing about the movie. (FWIW, I thought the movie was great. Kind of crazy ... ).

Repo Man is a cult classic. Weird mix of Southern California Punk culture mixed with a science fiction theme and strange characters. I grew up listening to early Punk/HC so I naturally gravited to this when I was hip to it in the late 80s. I'd make a great double feature with the documentary Decline of Western Civilization which even doesn't have a DVD release.

Thank you very much! That means I don't have to rush out to get Persona just yet. I've done enough damage for one sale.

Any impressions of The Long Day Closes? I'm just now discovering it but it sounds RIGHT up my alley. Want to know more of what to expect, though, given the comments on Davies' stream-of-consciousness style of directing. Could he be likened to Malick in that regard? Just trying to understand what people mean by that...?
