The news that Warner Archive is releasing a 50 GB Blu-ray of Out of the Past was the best news that I've heard this year, but I also have a faint sadness that the movie is not seeing a Criterion release or a comparable supplement-heavy presentation from Warner.

Ultimately, I'm just grateful that the resources are still available to bring a high definition transfer of Out of the Past into the world. Jacques Tourneur made some of the coolest films out there, and I hold him in the same league as Alfred Hitchcock, Akira Kurosawa, John Ford, and Fritz Lang.

It's great that they're taking a gem from out of the past and into the present and future.

So I was wondering if someone had a firsthand account of the actual stock there. I know there is a bigger one at Glendale Blvd, but I won't be coming near that one
There are a few stores that do not have media sections, the Downtown store (80202) being one of them, so you'd have to do a road trip.

Try that zip code I gave you (80246 (Glendale)) which is about 5 miles away for one that does carry many Criterion tities, blu-ray and dvd. (They used to have one heck of a CD section too, but they got rid of 98.6% or so of that a while ago.)

The other good store nearby is about 9 miles away, in Westminster (80030).

Between those two you should be able to do pretty well in terms of what will typically be available in their stores (vs. having them order in something for you).

I too was deeply impressed by Broadcast News when I watched it awhile back.

I watched Fat Girl last night, and while the movie wasn't that spectacular the ending was incredible.

but considering the amaunt of Ozu and Naruse movies (some in "HD") , i would love to see a upgrade here.
My prior (effective Tuesday morning) ISP didn't offer much in the way of HD bandwidth options, but, by paying a little extra, I seem to have adequate bandwidth via my new ISP for amazon prime in HD, so looks like I may take a short plunge into Hulu Plus before too long (wasn't going to bother without HD as an option). Not so much interested in watching stuff that's already on disc, or even coming to disc, but a few months back I did notice a good number of titles that piqued my interest, a lot of them probably destined to remain stream-only. (A lot of them Japanese...)

Looking forward to sticking my toes in the water, though gawd knows I already have more than enough stuff to catch up with on disc, and that pesky HD dvr as well. Just need to set aside a month or two and dig in. (Or try to do it all during free one week trial period, yeah sure.)

I would love to see Criterion do Accidental Tourist, but I'm a serious Anne Tyler junkie.

Watched Broadcast News recently on Amazon Prime. Thought it was pretty good movie but not sure about the replay value and whether it would be worth buying it. Not meant to be a slight as was definitely worth seeing. It does seem like a weird Criterion though.

Everytime I watch Broadcast News it makes me want Working Girl on BLU. you can never have enough Joan Cusack and she is so wonderful in working girl, Mike Nichols is sadly lacking on BLU. I could see Criterion tackling a WG release I bet they could even get new Interviews with the cast /crew and even possibly a commentary track.

I guess I'm the only one who didn't care much for Broadcast News.

Nothing about it really jumped out at me.

Maybe Criterion will ready the Agnes Varda set for BLU. I would love to see Le Bonheur (1965) in HD. I just love that film of hers. I can't say I've ever seen anything quite like it the films colors tone and story. This is one of my favorites.

Last nite I went back into my Pierre Etaix set and watched Le Grand Amour and I liked it a lot. Great transfer and color. also a lot of fun.. some of the sequences were genius! Speaking of Pierre Etaix I totally forgot he is also in PickPocket! (Also a great new Criterion BLU upgrade!)

Agree, Le Bonheur is absolutely stunning! One of the single best films in the Criterion Collection, and an upgrade of the set would be in the running for best release of the year.

I've ordered the Pierre Etaix set in the sale, so can't wait to check those out. They're curiously never mentioned here but they look great (and also, are they the best value films in the collection? Very low price for a great lot of films).

Yes The Pierre Etaix set is nice. I have watched I believe 3 of
The films so far. (Some are short films however)

I can't reccomend the new Jacques Demy set enough, Bay of Angels first viewing is like unearthing a great film. The movie alone is worth the proce of the set!

And after all these years of lost rights it has only hurt Studio Canal IMO. I can only imagine what films Criterion would have upgraded to BLU by now and where are they just wasting away because we once thought SC were really gonna churn out some titles but ok the US... Well it is a shame. (And don't forgot no one can sell a title quite like Criterion) SC loss for sure.

As EricJ pointed out, the poster that was displayed in filmmusic's posting shows a Warner Bros. logo in the corner. Which means the likelihood of it being licensed to Criterion is pretty low.

Mann did a stellar job with a mediocre script. He just didn't have the actors or the script he would have in later pictures. Like I said, I really enjoy Thief and have watched it twice since buying it but it's not on the same level as The Insider, Miami Vice, Collateral, or Heat for me.

Scottie, I say this with love, but you should realize that all the titles that you really seem to love the most are among the higher brow arty films.

No judgement, but you have continually been disappointed (per your posts) with most of the more genre driven or mainstream films. Of course, this is not true 100% of the time, just a whole lot.

Anyway, I'm only mentioning this as an observation, not trying to troll or judge.

Heat's tight script and action sequences really elevate it.

Warner Archive is pretty good about at least porting over any extras that existed on DVD. On the other hand, the only extra on Out of the Past was the commentary.

There is no denying that Jean Vigo was a very controversial director, especially for his time. He did things that no one before him had done. As a result, his impact on the film world is equivalent to Orson Welles with Citizen Kane.

The first film in the set is À propos de Nice and this is perhaps the closest example to an early French New Wave film that I can think of. Jean Vigo films life in the city of Nice as it is. He examines the daily functions of the lower, middle, and upper classes and differentiates their lifestyles from one another. One could almost say that it is a docu-drama of sorts. The editing is pretty rapid, as well. Vigo does not linger too much on one thing and skips around to cover as much ground in such a short duration of time. I was truly surprised to see a topless woman featured in the film. Nudity of any sorts, especially in film, was seen as taboo and it continued to be that way for many years to come. I wonder how those who were taken by surprise by this in the 1930s would view today's nudity.

The second film in the set is Taris. It is an educational piece of work about famous French swimmer, Jean Taris, and some of the different swimming techniques, such as the breaststroke. I was truly amazed at Vigo's directing, especially with some of the close-up underwater scenes that showed the swimmer's legs performing a handful of routines.

The third film in the set is Zéro de conduite. The film was way ahead of its time in terms of such concepts as challenging authority, rebellion, and revolution. I can see how François Truffaut was inspired by this film for The 400 Blows, where we see the character of Antoine Doinel constantly resisting authority, especially with his teacher and his parents. I can also see how this film influenced Lindsay Anderson with his film, If.... The characters in this film did not rebel to the degree that Malcolm McDowell's character did, but during such a time where respect was seen as one of the most essential qualities a person could have, this was certainly rare.

The last film in the set, L'Atalante, was Jean Vigo's only feature-length film prior to his early death in the mid-1930s. I could not help but think that the film shared a lot of qualities with F.W. Murnau's Sunrise, but in differing aspects. The story focuses on how a strained relationship ultimately leads to the separation and eventual reunion of two individuals who clearly care about one another. However, what makes this one stand out in particular for me was the sharp narrative. I was not as impressed by this film as the majority of film aficionados out in the world, but seeing some of the things that were put into the story truly surprised me. In one particular scene, the main characters are going out to a dance hall for the evening. They meet a swindler who speaks an explicit line of dialogue (I'm talking something that would almost only be acceptable in this century). I rewound the clip once or twice to see if I read the line correctly and surely enough, I did.

All four of these films had a strong impact on what we now know about film in this current day and age. It comes as no surprise to me that Jean Vigo had a huge influence on the Truffauts, Godards, and the like of the French New Wave of the 1950s and the 1960s. I would not say that these films are the most compelling bodies of work out there. They are, however, perfect examples of a visionary who was not afraid to take risks and challenge society's standards.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts here. It's been at least a couple of years since I watched this set, and now I feel like I'm due a revisit. Haven't been able to get À propos de Nice out of my head since I first watched it, maybe because I watched it half a dozen times at that sitting. I like 20s/30s experimental film, and this one is just edgy enough without losing you. And it feels so smart and alive. And Zéro de conduite has a lot going for it. Not only the theme, but the way the mood and even genre shifts in that last section is what beauty in film feels like. And there's L'Atalante. It's amazing that a guy as young as Vigo could put the universality of these characters and their relationship into such a specific context. Almost Shakespearean. You know what everyone in the film is feeling despite the cinema conventions.

Sad that this was Vigo's entire output, but at least he did these. I think I might like 'em better than you, but it's good to see some appreciation.

And as one more interesting bit, I think I remember that Vigo was tight with Painlevé. There's definitely a similar feel in Vigo and the early Painlevé in Science is Fiction, and they both had some interest in underwater filming.
