What a shame too... I haven't seen the stage version but the original cast album for Nine is spectacular, and the libretto has very clever lyrics (particularly for us film aficionados)... watching the Nine movie is an awful case of how-did-this-happen

8-1/2 is one of my all time favourites. Everytime I watch it I peal back layers and discover new things. A great movie, but perhaps best watched after Nights of Cabiria, La Strada and La Dolce Vita.
Perhaps that was my mistake.

Also, for some reason, I find watching Italian movies very tiring. I think it's something to do with their intonation.

Nobody's talking about THE BIG CHILL, which streets today. Picked up a copy from an Amazon marketplace seller for $27 shipped. Wasn't willing to pay much more than that since this is a blind buy. I like the plotline and love 80's ensemble dramas but haven't seen this one. Thoughts?

The Big Chill has the misfortune of being released on the fatal day-after-sale-ends-at-Barnes-&-Noble, so it may not get a lot of heavy rotation for a little while. It might be one of the candidates for the November sale for me, but I just cannot quite get fired up about the movie right now for some reason.

As I stated they do make a loss on these replacement cases and artwork etc :P
how so? (not a rhetorical question.. accepting the fact I might be wrong here ) its just paper and plastic. hard to believe they'd take a loss on it.

In fact, I think it largely makes the film the masterpiece that it is.
I wished there was more of Lorre in the film and I, too, was a bit bored - probably w/ the same scenes that struck you that way. I've got it ranked pretty low myself.

(cool quote, btw!.. just saw that film. )

in addition to La Ceremonie, I'd watch Murmur of the Heart and Lacombe, Lucien. I've pimped this film here a few times, but Robert Bresson's L'Argent is really good. ..and if you like Godard, I can't think of a better way to spend 20 minutes than to watch his short film All The Boys Are Called Patrick. it has that whimsical, playful, straightforward kinda vibe - somewhere between Band of Outsiders and A Woman is a Woman.

Yeah I somehow doubt they'd make a loss on a $5 replacement case. Going on the assumption that they don't make a loss on the majority of their titles during their own half off sales (and B&N's, which they probably sponsor with lowered bulk prices), that would imply the 1 sheet artwork and case make up for more than 25% of their production costs. Pretty unlikely.

I stopped in at a Barnes & Noble store yesterday (the last day of the 50% off sale), hoping to find this sitting on the shelf a day early. No dice. It's a nostalgic movie for me. If you like ensemble pieces, you might like this one. That might be the best thing about it (... and the music).

Will get this on the November sale probably..
Loved the film. Saw it for the first time some months ago!

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

I watched Purple Noon last night, wow, what a movie. I now gotta watch The Talented Mr. Ripley, I think I saw it a long time ago but don't remember much.

Guys, Alain Delon is the dude! He's so good in this movie, he doesn't mess around and is such a great actor in this one. I recommend you run, don't walk, to your local rental store and get this film to watch. Heck, I say you blind buy this bad boy as well.

What a bizarre film that is! Can't say I liked it, but it contained such strikingly vivid and surreal imagery that certain scenes kept my eyes glued to the screen, almost involuntarily so.

Purple Noon looks beautiful on Blu-ray as well. I bought it the same day that I bought my first Blu-ray player, and I was blown away by the look of the Mediterranean setting. There's an amazing close-up of Marie Laforêt's face late in the film that made me realize how much the high definition format can add to watching a movie at home.

Alain Delon really is the man. In addition to his fine performances in Purple Noon, Le Samouraï, and Le Cercle Rouge, he also has prominent roles in The Leopard and in L'Eclisse.

I hope that the hint for Red Sun in the New Year's drawing really was a hint for Red Sun.

I haven't gotten around to watching Purple Noon yet (now I can't wait to rectify that, thanks to your feedback) but I did like The Talented Mr. Ripley quite a bit when I first saw it a few years ago. I was so sucked into the vortex of the story that it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.

Speaking of Alain Delon, Rocco and His Brothers would be an incredible announcement.

I know a bluray would be good but if you can get the DVD release it's totally worth it. The PQ is pretty good and it could hold you out until the possibility of the bluray being released.

I completely agree. In fact, I have the DVD - that's how I came to be aware of the film's greatness.
