Sorry for the sacrilege...
I've got both. The transfer on the UK edition is great, easily the equal of the Criterion. I personally prefer the Criterion extra material, as I worship Cimino, but the ones on the UK disc are far more objective and offer a more interesting wider view of the production than the ones on the Criterion. I suspect that they (the UK extras) will be of greater value to the casual fan of HG, or newcomers to the picture.

That being said, were I to recommend one edition to a UK customer then the UK edition over the Criterion is a no-brainer, given that it costs between £10 and £13, depending on your HMV.

Cage is great in a number of films.

Bringing Out The Dead
Herzog's Bad Lieutenant
Wild At Heart
Rumble Fish
Red Rock West
Adaptation

Honorable mention - Fast Times At Ridgemont High (as he's barely in it).

I really like Snake Eyes too, but can appreciate that that is an acquired taste! The same goes for Peggy Sue Got Married and Valley Girl!

Why not divert those resources to new product that people don't already have?

What I would hate to hear a year from now is something like "well the sales for our last Kubrick box were pretty flat, so we're going to scale back our release schedule for future blu ray upgrades."

But then, I'm not in marketing for WB.
But what about people new to collecting(such as myself)? I don't have any Kubrick BD's and the last set is OOP. I'm actually glad they're rereleasing it.

I received my Demy set today and started in on it with the four shorts on the Lola disc. Having seen only Cherbourg and Donkey Skin, these were pretty surprising, as they don't line up with what Demy had become in my mind. Les horizons mort feels like something Alain Resnais might have directed. I did like them all though, so we're off to a great start.

I wrote in-depth about the shorts last week (my site can be found via my twitter account below) and said much the same thing. I had Les horizons morts down as his Cocteau film, while I saw a number of comparisons between Ars and Resnais' Toute la mémoire du monde, and even the work of Chris Marker. Obvious comparison, but Le saboteur du Val de voire reminded me of Bresson. With these three shorts I think we're looking at a filmmaker still finding his voice/style, but they're fascinating insights in to the road to Lola.

My number one request!

I watched it years ago when I was discovering Visconti. Nearly up there with The Leopard for me.

So I saw my first Satyajit Ray film today. He's been one of the big giants of world cinema I hadn't explored yet. Watched The Music Room on Hulu. It took me quite a bit for me to get into the rhythms of the film. It's so relaxed, and so music heavy that I thought this would make for a better soundtrack than film. I liked spotting some of the tunes Anderson used in The Darjeeling Limited. Once the themes start coming to the fore though, and the story takes an unexpected, tragic turn I connected with it a bit more. Solid film, and will watch The Big City and Charulata soon.

Anybody here watch the HBO series The Leftovers? My girlfriend and I are watching it and we both love it. A lot of mystery, philosophy, and surreality. Grest stuff. I think it is the kind of show that a lot of you guys could really get into.

Yeah. Liking it, tho not crazy on it yet, but almost don't want to put any definitive opinion on it to see how they at least finish this first season. Justin Theroux is great, but the best episode so far was the Christopher Eccleston centric episode.

Never thought about that! I never was much into golf or mini golf for that matter, but I can see someone enjoying this green carpet for those who like to practice putting.

Hehe.. I'm also far too good looking to be seen in a picture here. Is it a taboo thing about forums about posting pictures of oneself? Not sure what the rules are regarding that.

Watched Seven Samurai yesterday. Loved, loved, loved it.

I'm not a fan of Rashomon. What Kurosawa should I get next?

Snake Eyes is a guilty pleasure movie of mine, I watch it on a semi-regular basis. I love the fractured story line and the jumped time line; great stuff!

Yojimbo/Sanjuro are both excellent. If you like MacBeth check out Throne of Blood. For a pretty good detective movie, check out Stray Dog.

Doesn't that beg the question "Why didn't they just keep the previous set in print?"

Hidden Fortress should be right up your alley.

Nicolas Cage was also quite good in Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans. That was not a bad movie. We've got Cage in a roll well-suited for his antics, we've got camera shots from the point of view of iguanas, and we've got Fairuza Balk in a cop outfit.

I'll never be fully in tune with Werner Herzog's style, aside from Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu and Rescue Dawn, which are my favorites, but Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans works decently well.

When people do not post images of themselves, I assume that they're either hideously ugly or that they're so amazingly hot that they'll break the internet. When it comes to Blu-ray.com, of course, I go with the latter assumption.

I sort of like the Alcoholics Anonymous vibe with this particular online community, though.

Thanks guys. I was looking into Yojimbo/Sanjuro and The Hidden Fortress earlier. Macbeth is my favorite Shakespeare so I'll look into Throne of Blood.

Stray Dog is my second favorite Akira Kurosawa film behind Seven Samurai. I'd love for it to be upgraded to Blu-ray so that I can put it in my film noir section where it belongs. The DVD is also crying out for a good video quality improvement.

I was reminded of Stray Dog when I watched the latest Bond film, Skyfall, because both movies feature a character who holds true to his principles despite circumstances, and this person works as a contrast against a second character who allows his principles to be swayed by circumstances.

Some of his non-samurai stuff is great too, like High and Low, Stray Dog, and Drunken Angel.

Just be warned that Throne of Blood features a very unique acting style based on the Japanese Noh style theater, where actors wear masks. The actors often times hold the same expression for entire scenes, it's pretty interesting, but it catches people off guard sometimes. It's quite different from the naturalistic acting of Seven Samurai. If you can get past that, you'll enjoy it!
