That does sound interesting. I may check it out just to see what it's like.

I would love to have seen Akira Kurosawa direct a straight-up horror movie. His visual approaches would have been so conducive to potential greatness along those genre lines.

Throne of Blood comes the closest out of all of his films that I've seen, though, and it's a real treat.

It occurs to me that I mighta oughta pull Throne of Blood from my unwatched Blu-ray stack and revisit it. I loved the Criterion DVD, but I've heard that the Blu-ray improves on it in a noticeable way.

This is a good point though, thanks to Kurosawa's direction, Macbeth seems to inhabit Noh. The pacing, the cinematography, the music and sound with high-pitched voices and loud clacks, the incredible wind, the masks, all these Noh-style elements jell to tremendous effect in Throne of Blood. You'd almost think Shakespeare was Japanese after seeing this. It's my favorite cinema interpretation of this play, and one of my favorite Shakespeare adaptations in film, period. It's just chilling.

You're in for greatness.

Pierrot Le Fou is an amazing-looking color film, and one of the best color transfers in the Criterion collection.

The story has its odd moments, but this is still one of the classic Godard films before he completely stepped off of the Kurtz boat, so to speak.

Nice! I think it's my favorite Godard film.

The film does an awesome job at tackling the concept of modernism and I believe it is one of the earliest examples to do so. Furthermore, the film is comprised of serious drama and outrageous humor, thus creating one big, crazy adventure.

So what film of his was the beginning of the end?

Good to hear. I've liked everything I've seen from 60s Godard. Vivre Sa Vie is my favorite Godard, and I'd be lying if I said Karina wasn't a motivating factor for the purchase.

I'll never be fully in tune with Werner Herzog's style, aside from Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu and Rescue Dawn, which are my favorites, but Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans works decently well.
.
I think you should give Encounters at the End of the World a shot. It's got plenty of adventure, spectacle, and quite a few memorable outsiders.

And yes! Cage's batty side works brilliantly in Bad Lieutenant: PCINO. Throw in iguana POV and XZibit, and you've got a deliciously idiosyncratic take on the Abel Ferrara classic.

Man, I can't wait for my Herzog set to arrive!

Weekend is a strange, strange film.

I'm tempted to upgrade it, though, just because it has a great continuous camera shot, and a few other memorable moments that would probably translate well to high definition.

I've almost upgraded all of the Criterion DVDs from my old collection, but am sort of waiting for when I'm in a specific mood to see Godard's Weekend or Malle's Black Moon again. *shudders*

I rented Encounters at the End of the World on DVD years ago. I'm not in a hurry to own it, but it's a fascinating movie in many ways, one of which is a scene that serves as a good antidote to March of the Penguins.

Mine arrived today! God, these films have needed to be on blu forever!

I intend to savor all 16 of them, and most of them more than once.

Shout timed the Herzog release pretty well to give me time to go through them before the Tati set consumes my screen after the November sale.

Yes indeed. I haven't seen a good chunk of the films, so I can't express how content I am over the fact that my first viewings will be under ideal circumstances.

With this and the Zatoichi set, I've got a lot of movies to see this fall.

Nice! I've been checking on ebay myself, and seriously considering splurging on it. It's probably my favorite Godard, and I realllly want it on Blu. I own the Criterion DVD, so if I can sell that copy it wouldn't wound my wallet too terribly.

Well! I would consider this sale a big success.
