You're missing out, Polaroid - he's pretty good in Rain Man, Born On the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Minority Report and Collateral.

Ive seen most of those, but I felt they were pretty average - and for Minority Report, Samantha Morton stole the show :P

I don't care what people say - Criterion NEEDS to get their hands on Morvern Callar! Incredible film from Lynne Rasay and incredible performance form Morton.

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

For anyone in NYC just saw that tonight they're showing the Black Narcissus with Thelma Shoonmaker there in person.

That being said, this film was tough to watch because I found DDL one of the most reprehensible characters I've ever seen in cinema; the fact that he kindly adopted the baby boy at the beginning (when his real father died in the mine?! blast) was overshadowed by his horrific actions later....One of the most difficult scenes to watch (at least for me) was when he denounced his hearing-impaired son when he wanted to get his blessing to get married, for no particular reason....Quite unspeakable. Throughout the film, I always got the impression that the DDL character had serious issues with women...not necessarily that he wasn't attracted to them, but there seemed to be something misogynistic in his attitude towards them, which is possibly why he didn't like the fact that his son wanted to get married...Just my theory.

The scene at the very end
[Show spoiler]when he beat the PD priest character with the bowling pin (also without apparent reason) was quite gruesome & unexpected.

For these reasons, TWBB is not a film I re-watch often (I think I've only seen it twice).
I'd definatly disagree here. I think Daniel Plainview is one of the most sympathetic depictions of a sociopath in a film, in that he seems a product of his environment. I don't think he started out that way, I think he just gradually transformed into one, which makes his descent into madness all the more heartbreaking.

Yes, his preoccupation is solely to piss you off, and you in particular.

Really good acting all across the board. The blu-ray has had very bad reviews and I think would benefit from a remaster and possible criterion release. Scorsese's Film Foundation would be a great choice to do the work. I bought the existing blu but would no doubt upgrade in a second.

Minority Report is one of my favorite films from the 200x's; agree that Sam Morton stole the film - amazing performance. She's definitely an underrated actress...

Morvern Callar was a fantastic independent film; I saw this in the theater...

Re: Lynne Ramsay (sp?!), her film Ratcatcher was also well-done.

Morton also had a small but IMHO great role in Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown (w/ Sean Penn).

I kind of missed out on the PTA discussion, but in my humble opinion The Master was one of the best films of this decade. Maybe even the best.

I mentioned Eyes Wide Shut previously :P - He was actually pretty good in Vanilla Sky, I do enjoy that film, but it does have its weaknesses...

Looking over Filmspotting's top films of the past nine years and am yet again reminded of how much I want Criterion to release 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days.

I started a separate thread about this question, before I realized that there was a Criterion sticky thread.

Does anyone have any information, insight and/or speculation about why Criterion hasn't been able to renew the rights for most of the Jean Pierre Melville films they once had?

Is Studiocanal asking too high a price for a rights renewal or is it something else?

Really sucks that we don't have a Criterion blu ray for Bob Le Flambeur or Le Doulos.

Add Risky Business to that list. One of my favorites from the 80s. Awesome Tangerine Dream soundtrack as well.

And with regards to Cruise's recent string of action blockbusters, Jack Reacher was a very good, old school style actioner. Great acting by Tom in that one, along with brave non-CGI stunts and an intense storyline.

I really, really, really need to watch that. It's on Netflix.

By the way, I'm sure Beyond the Hills will be released before the year is up.

Mostly something else. Criterion's rights for StudioCanal owned titles were on a film-by-film basis. From what I heard, StudioCanal wanted to contract with a label for North American rights to the whole magilla. Criterion didn't want to do that.

At the moment, Lionsgate has a contract with StudioCanal to be the exclusive distributor for StudioCanal owned titles in North America. There are some exceptions (it's been said that Criterion was able to get the rights back for the Tati films due to intercession by the Tati estate). And I believe there are some StudioCanal titles that Criterion still has in print, most likely due to existing contracts for those titles that haven't expired yet.

Unfortunately, Lionsgate has not only dropped the ball, but seem to have let it roll under the bleachers where they can't find it. They ended up releasing only seven StudioCanal titles over the course of three years, and it's been a year and a half since the last one.

I'm not an expert, but I believe Lionsgate is now the exclusive rights holder for the Studio Canal catalog in the US, so once rights expire they automatically go to Lionsgate. Someone feel free to correct me if i'm a little off.

(Edit - Jayembee said it much better.)
