Wow, didn't realize I was so influential in this thread!

Those are 2 very different films, but nevertheless, one thing I can say about both are : they are NOT boring.

When you get a chance to see my Criterion recommendations, make sure you drop me a private message to let me know what you thought.

The Third Man gets my vote.

I didn't even know it was in print again. Unless you see it somewhere for a good deal, or are looking at the Studiocanal version.

The Third Man by far. It is more rewatchable than Touch of Evil and is one of the best noirs that I have seen. I thought the Studio Canal blu looked fine despite some of the bad reviews online.

There is also an Italian blu-ray that's rather cheap and looks almost the exact same as the Criterion.

I personally enjoyed Touch of Evil more. Loved the cast and cinematography, which overall looked more like noir visually than The Third Man. Lots of fantastic lighting and shadows.

The Third Man.

Touch of Evil is really good but it has yet to completely grab me the way The Third Man or Double Indemnity or The Maltese Falcon has.

It's not back in print from Criterion, if that's what you mean. It's just available (in the US) in the Lionsgate/StudioCanal edition.

Flip a coin. You win either way. They're both great. When I'm faced with a difficult choice such as this....I buy both!

They're both classics. I vote for The Third Man, simply because it has some of the most amazing visuals in the history of cinema.

The new Universal Blu-ray of Touch of Evil is a win across the board, though, and I have a whole new respect for the film now that I've seen it in such a good-looking transfer.

To be in contention as one of the all time greats based on a single film? It would certainly have to be a spectacular film.
Charles Laughton's The Night of the Hunter is a fine example here, because I'd consider Laughton a great director just on the strength of that film.

I was just having a little fun with my above George Lucas comment.

John Carpenter is another director whom I consider to be good, although I'm not impressed with his recent works from the past 15 years or so. It's quite funny, because he comes off as really bitter on a new interview for the Scream Factory Blu-ray of Prince of Darkness, where he complains about the sad state of contemporary horror movies. His recent movies haven't exactly rejuvenated the genre.

If you can get your hands on the MoC Touch of Evil its a fantastic package brimming with commentaries and other goodies. I am very pleased with the steelbook.

Have Criterion mentioned any of their titles going out of print as of late? The last mention was Paul Robeson box set to my knowledge. I ask because I am missing 2 titles from my collection and throughout the sale and 7 B&Ns I never saw them. Wondering if it is a sign.

Hey greater Los Angeles area Criterion-ites --

The Arclight Cinemas in Pasadena will be showing In the Mood For Love and Le Cercle Rouge on 09/28 and 09/08 respectively. More details here: https://www.arclightcinemas.com/en/l...-C1F364FC6B4B}

Wasn't crazy about Cercle but I always hear great things about In the Mood for Love, so I'd definitely want to go to that!
