I've now finished both Volumes of Nymphomaniac. I can only make simple observations at this point, because there was so much to take in--no pun intended...

1. I noticed references to his other films throughout (the most obvious and lengthiest reference being to Antichrist
[Show spoiler]when Joe leaves for the night to wait for her BDSM meeting, and her son sneaks out to the balcony).

2. Once again I find homages to Tarkovsky.

3. It seemed that Volume 1 flowed better and held together better than 2. I felt more involved in Volume 1, and it did a phenomenal job of interspersing comedy into very serious scenes. That said, I intensely enjoyed the movie in its entirety and almost feel like watching all four hours again immediately.

4. Although I responded with a shallow recoil upon my first viewing of Salo, my desire to rewatch it (and even own it) has increased with each von Trier I see.

P.S. The scene I originally referred to was in Mrs. H.

Very likely, imo.
Is that's the extent of the deal? Criterion just has to take it and that's that? I have always been curious about that.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

I watched Blue Is The Warmest Color last night and I enjoyed it. The acting from the two leads was so intense, especially the apartment scene, you guys know what I mean. *wink wink nudge nudge*
I recommend you people's try that movie on for size, it's on Netflix so it'll cost you pennies for the minute to watch it. I hope you enjoy it as well.

I am now waiting in the theater for Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai to start.

*smiles, puts on sunglasses, and gives the thread a thumbs up*

So Boyhood is getting a November Blu release in the UK. I wonder if we'll see it in the November lineup.

Hmmm...I'm thinking January or February, to be honest.

I think we'll see both Beyond the Hills and Like Father, Like Son first, but who knows. Boyhood is doing really, really well.

I'm shocked, shocked to find that non-Criterion discussion is going on in here!

I saw Blue is the Warmest Color at the theater, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There's a great reference to another fun Criterion title, Pandora's Box, in this film during the party scene where that film is being played on an outdoor screen. I rather liked the implied comparisons of Adele and Louise Brooks.

I'm waiting until the special edition of Blue is the Warmest Color is released before I invite it to swim in my Blu-ray pool, though.

Sorry, but you have to not only be shocked, but appalled as well before we can begin to take proper measures.

I'm from a New England college town.
You're from one of those places where they still fantasize about lesbians as "sexy", right?

(In our town, half the female population looks like Janet Reno, Sinead O'Connor, or Harry Potter in the last three films.)

No idea but Kid With a Bike and Le Promise are two of my favorite Criterions (not as big of a fan of Rosetta). Would love to see more Dardennes including Two Days, 1 Night and much overdue classics of theirs (l'enfant and Le fils).

Like Father, Like Son would be great! I was very moved by that movie.

I'm pleased with my lovely edition from Plain Archive, but I'll probably buy the Criterion as well provided it has good extras. I wonder how long they will wait to release the special edition. One of my favourite movies of that year, although I didn't like the sex (yeah I know, weird).

There are so many fantastic Linklater films that aren't on blu ray, that Criterion should do a box set:
SubUrbia
The Newton Boys
Tape
Walking Life
Fast Food Nation
A Scanner Darkly
Me and Orson Welles
Bernie

A combination of any of those would be one of the best box sets ever in my opinion. And then there's the Before trilogy. And we're getting Boyhood at some point...

I personally thought that the dancing scenes in Blue is the Warmest Color were more erotic than the actual sex scenes. There's a great sequence late in the film where Adele is out dancing with her teacher friends, and I could have watched that for hours.

A friend of mine used to have a T-shirt with the saying, "Dancing is the vertical expression of a horizontal desire."

No, that wasn't the apartment scene I was talking about. The one later on before the restaurant scene.

Non-Criterion post...

I've organized a Boyhood film screening meetup for tomorrow evening with a bunch of friends and aquaintances via Facebook. It's playing at one of the art house theaters here. I am finally going to see this movie! Yeeeeeehawwww!

Are there any plans to bring Moonrise Kingdom or the Grand Budapest Hotel to criterion collection?

Sammy Jenkins is lying. Anderson's contract says all of his movies must be available to Criterion.

I don't think either will be soon, but they will eventually show up.

I want to buy them but I don't feel like double dipping if it eventually goes criterion.
