He never said that it's initial release would be on Criterion.

Very disappointing, if true.

That may mean the Criterion release is a few years out.

Could be that Amazon doesn't have the details correct. It wouldn't be the first time.

Maybe a bare bones release followed by a Crit Co. release 6-12 months later. It gives them time to collect extras. I can't see CC sitting on this one for 3-4 years.

I saw Boyhood last night and it was wondrous. I had never experienced a movie quite like that before. I was just as much intrigued by the "growing up" of the boy's sister and friends and aging of his mother and father as much as Ellar Coltrane's character, Mason. It was almost like neo-realism too. I loved the vignettes of normal day life and possibly highlights and lowlights in the boy's story that spanned 12 years. At times, I kept thinking of Slacker, the other Richard Linklater movie, especially when the boy, Mason, was older towards the end of the film. One scene in Slacker that came to mind was the very first scene in Slacker, when Linklater is in the taxi cab and rambling on about parallel universes and quantum possibilities, and then in Boyhood, Mason almost sounded like him in that one scene while he was in the car driving on the road with his girlfriend. It was fascinating also seeing Patricia Arquette's character age from her early 30s to early-mid 40s as her hairstyle kept changing in length but always staying blonde. Ethan Hawke's character definitely appeared to age esp. in the last few years that Boyhood was shot., where you saw more wrinkles on his face and a more glossy hairstyle. What was fascinating were the characters that came in and out of the boy's life, including his photography teacher, his employer, his dad's friend, his girlfriend Sheena and then various other characters including a very touching scene with
[Show spoiler]the Mexican septic worker who was inspired by Arquette's character to go to college, get an education and a respectable job
.

One of my favorite quotes in the film was from Ethan Hawke's character when he said something along the lines of as you grow older, your skin becomes thicker and you lose the feelings and passion that you had when you were younger.

Boyhood is an outstanding character study and ultimately improves upon Slacker in many ways, as well as Dazed and Confused and many other Linklater films I can see all tied up in this movie.

Boyhood portrays life as it is for a family and takes no pretense for what it is.

I think you're on to something. I guess we won't know for certain until an official announcement is made. Still, Criterion could release a barebones release in similar fashion to Blue is the Warmest Color and work on gathering the extras for a special edition down the road.

I'm just having a hard time believing that Paramount would be the studio to distribute an IFC owned title. IFC's relationship with Criterion and Linklater's confirmation almost seems as if there will only be one release.

I have a feeling someone will take exception with this, but while this is part of their mission statement: "a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films, has been dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world..." I feel that their niche is more along the lines of important foreign films that don't have domestic distribution and obscure-ish films by important American directors.

Of course, we have films like On The Waterfront and 12 Angry Men, but I feel that those are exceptions and not necessarily the "rule," if you will.
Exactly what I meant, thanks.

So The Godfather wouldn't be a good fit for the collection because it's not sufficiently obscure?

That's a little snobbish, no?

This would support a conclusion that the Amazon listing has incorrect details on it.

Exactly. I'm not sure if Paramount has even distributed one IFC film.

“Every filmmaker dreams of having their work wind up in The Criterion Collection, so I am pretty ecstatic about this news. Whatever quality level comes next above ‘gold standard’ is the cinematic realm inhabited by Criterion,” said Jonathan Demme.

Obviously I'm a big fan of the whacky-C and I have no quarrel with enthusiasm but that still struck me as pretty funny

"Criterion is setting a DVD, Blu-ray, and digital release. to drop in the coming months."

Either someone has their facts wrong or Criterion is making a change they havent announced yet.

Hmmm...unless they are referring to it being released on iTunes (like Criterion has done for other films)?

Great news, here's hoping that this means that an upgrade of My Dinner With Andre is forthcoming too.

Could 'digital release' even refer to making it available on Hulu?
