The Criterion Collection

I'm getting more and more excited about Mystery Train and Close-up. Both look like such fascinating pieces of postmodernism filmmaking. I haven't seen either film, but I loved Kiarostami's other films Taste of Cherry and I caught Certified Copy when I was in Cannes. Can't wait to check out Close-up. Mystery Train just looks like such a unique and different kind of post-modernist American film. I'm thrilled to see them this month!

Godard once said "film begins with D.W. Griffith and ends with Abbas Kiarostami." So take that for what it's worth. Still no release this month is coming between me and a copy of Red Desert on blu.

Whoah. I didn't know Kiarostami has been given the Godard seal of approval. Now I REALLY want to get my hands on Close-up. Just the synopsis on the criterion page made me drool when I read it, but knowing that Godard thought that highly of him is making me dying to see all of his work now.

Red Desert seems to be very highly thought of on this board. I've never even heard of it. Any similar works one could compare it to to give me an idea of whether I'll like it or not? Have a look at my collection if that helps.

I just got done watching "Man Bites Dog". Incredibly compelling and highly violent. It satires human fascination with murder/crime while at the same time being completely fascinating itself. An excellent film not for the weak of heart (pun mildly intended ).

I did a forum search, and another member contacted Criterion asking them if they had any future plans to release "The Passion of Joan of Arc" on Blu-ray. Criterion's response was negative. They have no such plans. It looks like it is DVD for me with this movie.

a "news" post on bd.com says that there is a new list of titles going OOP, and that it includes "Man Who Fell To Earth"
anybody know where the entire list can be seen?
I don't see it on the Criterion site.

man Criterion is just being raped of many of it's best films.
really unfortunate development.
I mean if StudioCanal puts them all out on blu-ray that would be one thing, but I think we all know that every OOP title won't be coming to bd.

It wouldn't be so bad if they cherry picked from several different directors or eras, but to nearly wipe out the Bunuel films is a travesty.

Well there are 2 other Michelangelo Antonioni films in the collection (L'Avventura and L'eclisse). 2 others on dvd which seems to be his most "known" are BlowUp and The Passenger with Jack Nicholson. All of those along with La notte (Maters Of Cinema has it) and Red Desert is about the main focus point. Oh and Kino has Il grido.

For those who haven't seen "The 400 Blows" yet, Turner Classic Movies will be airing it at 2am est. A great opportunity to watch before you buy.

That's cool sounding, but it's on netflix instant play as well. Plus, The 400 Blows is also a film I can't see anyone not liking. It's just one of those rare films almost anyone can appreciate, enjoy, and be challenged by. I think it's a perfect film, but that's just me.

I have The Passion of Joan of Arc on DVD sitting proudly in my Criterion collection. I wouldn't get rid of this if it was the only DVD I had.......which leads me to a question; I keep my Criterions (both blu-ray and dvd) separate from my Blu-ray collection. I also own Une Femme Mariee from MoC and Contempt from Studio Canal that I keep with the regular blus'. Content-wise they're closer to Criterion's offerings than, say, The Incredible Hulk. Should I (would you) keep them there or place them with the Criterions ? Just curious.

I would put them on the end of the collection of Criterions that you have. Maybe one day you will have a collection of MoC and Studio Canal/Lionsgate films to put in order too.

Janus Teases At New Charlie Chaplin Site, Unveils Poster Art

To celebrate Janus’ upcoming screening run, and eventual release in the Criterion Collection, they have created a new page on their website. At this point it is just a poster image, with “coming soon” at the top of the page. The poster lists the following titles, indicating they will be presented “all in new 35mm prints“:
