Dude, MoC put out the same type of product as Criterion AND they are numbered (and the blus are numbered in there own collection)...why wouldn't you put them together? And personally, for a lot of reasons, MoC as a company sit better with me...anyone in this thread who doesn't buy MoC blus is really missing out. Most are region free and they put just as much care into their releases...and they have a nice offering that isn't being replicated by the BFI or CC.

Studio Canal Collection...thats a different story. I have Contempt and it will soon find itself on a certain auction site...

What is the point of that exactly? Did they ever say why they won't expand to distribution in the U.S.? It would seem to make sense given the larger market.

It's not their choice. They strive to make all of their releases region-free, but the licensing company (companies?) have asked them to lock these upcoming releases.

Apparently, Kino is trying to force MoC to lock their upcoming Metropolis BD (for obvious reasons)... even though Kino keeps releasing region-free discs themselves. I'm buying both releases, anyway, even if I can't play MoC's. I'll be region-free someday.

Matters of Cinema is a 3-man UK-based company. How much financing do you expect them to have exactly? There are certain legal restrictions that they have to follow, I'm sure. It's not like we're talking about a global filmaking company like Warner Brothers. MOC is a distribution outlet just like Criterion. And... Criterion is a US-based company and you don't see them releasing region-free blu-rays for foreign markets, do you?

I just see a lot of crying over spilt milk that can't be contained. Save your money and go region-free.

It just seems to me that some of you expect these independent companies to hand you the world instead of appreciating what you're actually able to have from them. And when we all die we'll be looked at as nothing but hoarders.

Have you been to the steelbook section of this forum? Those wanna-be comic book guy from the Simpsons would make all of us combined look like infants grasping for air concerning hoarding.

Plus, they have no taste. If its limited they will buy it, preferably 70 copies, so they can sell it at a mark up due to scarcity that they helped create.

And the person you quoted just seemed like he didn't get international licensing laws. No harm, no foul.

Sheesh, relax man. I had no clue it was a 3-man operation. You could have left it at your first two sentences instead of a long, pointless rant.

As far as hoarding goes I have a heck of a lot less Blu-Ray than other people, yourself included.

Don't get upset. CCFIX occasionally gets all hot and bothered but he always calms down and comes to his senses.

The real debate is why most of you who spend way too much money on blus haven't gotten a region free blu ray player yet?

So far there havn't been many region-locked Blu-Rays I want is the reason. I still use my PS3, though I do plan on getting an Oppo-83 eventually and making it region-free.

Personally there are some region B titles that I would want, but there's plenty of releases to keep me happy. Now someone living in the UK would not be able to watch the Criterion Blu-rays since they are locked region A...that would be a greater incentive to get a region free player.

That's where I am at. There are a few region B releases I'd like but not enough to justify running out and grabbing a region-free player. I am saving up for a better revicer first then eventually an Oppo-83 modified for region-free.

If you are saving up for a nice receiver skip the 83 and get the 80.

Really, though, everything you're condemning is a good thing. All this means is that people like MoC and want more of it. That's exactly what the company wants and what will eventually allow them to grow beyond a three-man operation.

And is it really unreasonable for people to be upset when they find out a title they want is going to be region-locked? We're not lashing out at MoC about it--we're just disappointed because we like MoC and want to buy and enjoy their products.

I don't know if I count as someone who "spends way too much money on blus," but I can tell you that having spent $400 on a PS3 less than two years ago doesn't motivate me to drop another $250 or so now to go region-free. There are a lot of BDs I want to purchase, which cost money, and the PS3 handles probably 95% of them. So far, the cost/benefit balance just isn't there. I don't plan on buying a region-free player for some time, but in the meantime I will likely buy a handful of region-locked Blus--especially those from MoC, because I want to support them.

So when I'm upset that an MoC blu is going to be region-locked, it's just because that means I won't get to watch it for some time. It's nothing against the company, ya know?

Didn't say you did...but the money from the region locked titles you buy would be better served being put towards a region free player.

Do no put the cart before the horse. It will get mad.

Weeeeellll... just to be picky...

There is a Korean Region A Director's Cut BD of Thirst coming out this month from CJ Entertainment (which is thought to be far superior to the UK release). Also, the UK I'm a Cyborg is region free (but the extras are PAL). I didn't think the MoC Metropolis was yet confirmed Region B, but maybe I'm not up-to-date?

Read the M debate on criterion forums between the two transfers. And yes, M via Kino, which means simplistic packaging and no essay. Check the MoC thread to see how awesome the packaging to their version is....besides, I;dr ather support them.

Nothing against Kino, though. I just picked up Happy Together and it looks great. Someone from the company must be cruising these forums because they have really turned around the terrible practices they employed with DVD.
