Regarding the November releases, Monte Hellman confirmed that his westerns box set will be released that month, so that's one spot you can fill up on your predictions list.

I associated the two movies when I was looking up The Last Man on Earth earlier today and saw the image of Vincent Price and the tower, but I just ran a Google search for "L'Eclisse, Last Man on Earth", and it turns out that I'm not the only one who has linked the two.

This is a fun read...
Strange Correspondences: “The Last Man on Earth” and “L’eclisse”

The Last Man on Earth takes place in America, but it was filmed in Rome, Italy.

The observations in the above article about the closing montage of L'Eclisse and the opening montage in The Last Man on Earth fall in line with the theory that I posted jokingly in my previous post.

When I purchase The Vincent Price Collection II later this fall, I'm going to make a double feature night of these two movies, with L'Eclisse first and then The Last Man on Earth. (I have a rough public-domain DVD of The Last Man on Earth somewhere around here, but I'll wait until the Blu-ray comes out to revisit it.)

By the way, I disagree with the assertion in the above article that the two lovers in L'Eclisse were
[Show spoiler]driven apart by the threat of nuclear war. In my opinion, they are worlds apart in their personalities and desires, but their lives just happen to intersect for a short while. Monica Vitti's character has trouble showing affection, possibly because of her detached relationship with her mother. Alain Delon, by comparison, seems more interested in the conquest, and likes to drift from one sexual fling to another, as though people are merely commodities like the stocks that he trades.

After Hours and Alice are Warner Brothers, Bringing out the Dead is Paramount, and BoxCar Bertha is American International, which might be a good one for Olive or TT to pick up. Can't really see a boxed set with all the different studios involved.

Kundun is Disney, Age of Innocence is Columbia (Sony). Again, can't see Criterion doing either of these. But who knows? Any of those would be good, especially Alice and Age of Innocence.

So with that being said, expect one of the following:

* most likely
A Woman is a Woman - Godard
Ikiru - Kurosawa
Elevator to the Gallows - Malle

quite possible
Contempt - Godard
Bicycle Thieves - De Sica

long shots
Bob le flambeur - Melville
Talk to Her - Almodóvar
Le boucher - Chabrol

so yeah.. we'll be hearing about one of these...
The Malle is with Canal.

oh!

since when? I think everyone here figured that an upgrade of the CC DVD release was imminent.

EDIT:

One can buy a copy of the DVD here:
http://www.criterion.com/films/778-e...q=autocomplete

I googled to see if I can find out more. Other than you saying it several months ago, I don't see anywhere on the web that states that this is the case. Do you have an article?

Most of Malle's films are owned by Nouvelles Editions de Films. Some might be controlled by StudioCanal in France, but not in the US. I think all of the Malle releases so far, except for Vanya on 52nd Street (licensed from Sony), are NEF. Even the Eclipse documentaries set.

A Woman is a Woman and Contempt are both StudioCanal titles.

Re: A Woman is a Woman
that is a bummer! was not aware.

Re: Contempt
we recently had a clue that was probably not a clue that it could (possibly) be coming through Criterion again... or not.

Yes, I know. I'm in Region B myself (although I don't have a problem with regions), but it's just that a Criterion Bluray with the covers, the presentation, the extras and stuff would be great!

Fans of Antonioni's Identification of a Woman may be interested in this...

A five-CD box set, John Foxx - The Virgin Years 1980-1985, has been released today. The box set includes John Foxx's first four synth-pop albums that he released under Virgin Records (Metamatic, The Garden, The Golden Section, and In Mysterious Ways) plus a fifth disc of bonus tracks.

A mix of "Europe After the Rain" is the most prominent John Foxx track that was featured in Identification of a Woman, and that track is from his fantastic second album, The Garden. The great thing right now is that this whole box set can be purchased ($31 and change for me, including shipping) for what each of the individual albums cost nowadays.

If you liked the icy synth sounds in the Antonioni film, then this might be worth your while. I jumped at the chance, because I've always liked John Foxx's music, during and after his work with Ultravox.

Will Criterion ever release "A Brighter Summer Day". A 4K Restoration is sitting at Scorcese's Film Foundation for years now. And this is not a film that belongs in a box set similar to the previous WCF one, one of the clear reasons being that the film runs around 4 hours. And I look forward to a ton of special features, especially an interview with Wong Kar Wai, who happens to be a huge fan of the film.

And just as I mentioned Wong Kar Wai, when will we ever get a proper release of 2046. And can we please get Au Hasard Balthazer, or at least Diary of a Country Priest. Damn, this just goes on...

They've been trying to release A Brighter Summer Day for years, but there are rights issues that needed to be resolved. Hopefully it won't be much longer!

Regarding the damage you show to the booklet and cover... unfortunately, even a lot of the Criterion titles that are shipped to me from Amazon, B&N, or wherever else suffer the same fate. A lot times the covers will shift up or down within the plastic during shipping (or, maybe the covers aren't even fully inserted at the factory) and the edge on the Scanavo cases will rip right through the corners on the spine. I have a lot of Criterion covers like that. The same thing happens with the booklets, too. During shipment, it's possible that the package receives some hard impacts causing the indentions on the edge of the pages of the booklet. I just noticed the other day that my Monsieur Verdoux case has a piece of plastic broken off the case and the plastic insert cover on my copy of Eyes Without A Face is almost falling off, but I had never noticed it when I first got it. The cellophane wrapping job on your copy of Harold & Maude isn't the prettiest, though, but I have seen similar wrapping on other brand new Criterion discs, so I really can't see if you received a return or not.

Love Streams just arrived a day early.

I probably won't watch it until this weekend, but it's great to receive things ahead of time.

Aren't they only able to do that for International customers and not ones from the US and Canada due to a sales clause or another?
