I thought, ATHA was pretty bad in this regard. poor Ruck Hudson was midway through a sentence one time and the color shifted. ...and there was one scene late in the film where there was some pulsating and some damage of some sort, too.

oh, well. 4 of 5 for me.
I've seen that color shift quite often when 3 strip Technicolor movies are restored (Coincidently, the first time I ever saw it was on the DVD of Disney's Polyanna which also stars Jane Wyman). I think is has to do with the 3 separate color negatives shrinking at different places as they age, but I'm no expert. I think that some of the digital restoration can compensate for it to some degree, but my eyes tell me they haven't completely gotten around it yet because many Technicolor films seem to have it.

I've had a ton of stuff out from the library and (knock on wood) no recent problems.

Several years ago, however, when The Sopranos came out on DVD, I thought it would be a good chance to see the show being that I had never seen a minute of it. I watched the first episode and thought it was pretty good. 5 minutes into the second episode it started skipping. Oh, well. Right back to the library. To this day, that is all of The Sopranos I have ever seen.

On a happier note in modern times...
Just got back from the library and have high hopes for the 2 films I picked up:
The Earrings of Madame de...
That Obscure Object of Desire

I've only seen one Ophüls (Letter From an Unknown Woman) and one Buñuel (well I guess 2 because I saw Un Chien Andalou as well as Belle de Jour)

I liked what I saw from both directors, so I'm looking forward to this.

Which should I watch first?

By the way, I found these suggestions here. Please feel free to add to this list of Christmas movies. There has to be something to watch besides It's a Wonderful Life.

Edit: This isn't on Criterion (yet), but it is one of my favorite Christmas movies: La Bûche by Danièle Thompson.
These are a couple of lists I look up near Christmas:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...g_to_Christmas
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...hristmas_films

But I don't think there are many Criterion Christmas BLurays.

Two Days, One Night is my most anticipated release of the year. I love the Dardenne films on Criterion blu-ray.

Dardennes + Cotillard is going to be great. Waiting for the US release dates. A CC release is sure to follow.

Can't wait for this. The Dardenne's always get the best out of their actors.

Having watched Lorna's Silence a month or so ago, I've now seen all of their films (with the exception of this one, of course.)

Two Days, One Night is excellent. It is at times a humiliating experience but Cotilliard has this quiet ferocity the directors were able to capture. Great film.

Here is a caps comparison between the new Studio Canal transfer of Playtime, which I believe is what the new Criterion disc will be based on, with the old Criterion blu-ray: http://www.dvdclassik.com/forum/view...p?f=32&t=35333

Admittedly, I don't have the greatest set up, but I have the original Criterion Playtime and -- at least on my system -- I get much more natural skin tones than those in the Criterion screen caps.

Speaking of Fear and Loathing, I'm going to try to get my copy signed by Depp next Saturday... if I can find him around Cambridge. I'm also going to try to find John Waters, who is at Harvard that day.

Apparently no love for his Jack Dundee role or the movie The Best of Times.

The Survivors doesn't get a lot of love either but that's understandable enough.

It was pretty under-the-radar at the time and that was what? Thirty years ago?

I caught a 70mm screening of Playtime a couple years back and the colors on the new transfer seem closer to what I remember. Also, here is a 70mm film frame from the reconstruction of the film and it points to the new transfer being more accurate in terms of the color grade.

Also, I think the details and grain are much more defined in the new transfer. Cannot wait to see it.

Marion Cotillard can be quite incredible in the right movies.

During the early 2000s, I became attached to a movie, Love Me If You Dare (Jeux d'enfants), that starred Cotillard. The film was sort of mean-spirited in many ways, but it was also oddly touching.

I would be overjoyed if Criterion were to release Love Me If You Dare at some point, although it's a little more flighty than the average Criterion fare.

I like the transfer on the Criterion, but judging by the photos I am really liking the color clarity of the new transfer. Check out the socks in both photos. Plus you get a little more info at the top.

I've always meant to see that film but haven't gotten around to it. I remember being intrigued by seeing its trailer in the theaters years ago.

Cotillard has a role in A Very Long Engagement which should be on blu-ray in North America by now. It's interesting how Tautou didn't quite cross over to Hollywood after Amelie. I guess the critical dud that was Ron Howard's The Da Vinci Code didn't help. This is nothing against Tautou because she made that film watchable and is terrific.

Oh no... This is so sad.

Goodbye to one of cinema's greatest beauties. I loved her work with Bogart, but she also continued to stay active until the end.

The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, Key Largo, and Dark Passage are so wonderful, as are How to Marry a Millionaire and, more recently, Misery.
