Ah, the November announcements always carry larger expectations. Here's hoping they deliver.

I'll be surprised if they top October.

I am not sure whether or not this phantom page was added today or not, but this is the only one that follows all of the cast and credits for the October 2014 releases.

Take this with a grain of salt, but if it in fact was added today, we will be seeing a film by Howard Brookner in the Collection for November.

Also caught up with Leon Morin, Priest last night, which I was less taken with, but still very much enjoyed for the central relationship between Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Paul Belmondo. However, I do feel as though the other elements of Riva's character's life (namely her relationship with her daughter and Sabine) could have been more fully fleshed out.

That being said, here's how I'd rank the seven Melville films I've seen:

1. Le Doulos
2. Army of Shadows
3. Le Samourai
4. Le Deuxieme souffle
5. Bob le flambeur
6. Le Cercle Rouge
7. Leon Morin, Priest

Hoping to catch up with the two Melville's on Hulu Plus as well as Two Men in Manhattan and Un Flic this weekend. Any thoughts on these films?
one of the two on Hulu Plus is Les Enfants Terribles. It is a worthwhile watch, but definitely my lowest ranking Melville. I was surprised at how good Un Flic is. without giving anything away, I thought the scene that Owl referenced could have been done away with entirely. an analysis of the story makes one wonder what it had to do with anything. I enjoyed Two Men in Manhattan. it isn't great, but it's a clean and neat little story.

I'm holding out on seeing Le Doulos and Bob le Flambeur. Hoping that some distributor will surprise us. Otherwise, I've seen nearly everything else.

Look into the Masters of Cinema release of Le Silence de la Mer. Oh, shoot... THAT is the other one on Hulu, isn't it? Very effective and beautiful film. Not in his top tier, but like the others ones, there is enough to make it really worthwhile.

This page here confirms it (the Criterion reference is at the bottom of the page). Maybe not November, but soon. Interesting story. I hadn't heard of Howard Brookner before, but his life and work sound like something worthy of preserving.

I'm not quite the film encyclopedia that some around here are, so what usually happens is CC will announce a film that I had never heard of. I'll meet the announcement with mild indifference, only to read about people's excitement, check out a review or two and then feel inclined to pull the trigger on a blind buy.

I've got over 10 films in my collection that I had never even knew existed last year at this time. Really haven't been disappointed w/ any of them either.

Yes, I understand what you say. I have done 7-8 blind buys too and haven't been disappointed.
But at this time I explained my situation.
Well, even if there isn't anything that interests me right now, i have 15-20 Criterion waiting in my wishlist to buy.
I just would be thrilled and buy first if they announced something like Raise the Red lantern, or Farewell my Concubine, or Cyrano (1990) etc..
i'd like to be excited too for a film that I know and love, like all the other people here..

If they release another Kurosawa I'm hoping for The Bad Sleep Well. My favorite non samurai Kurosawa.

Ah cool. I guess if the phantom page was added today, we can assume that we'll at least get the following two releases.

-Burroughs: The Movie (phantom page)
-Monte Hellman: Western Collection (confirmed for November on his FaceBook)

Come to think of it, I'd rank Les Enfants Terribles at the bottom of my Melville list as well, although I need to shake the dust off of my Criterion DVD and give it another go.

Le Silence de la Mer is superb, and I love that Masters of Cinema Blu-ray. It does not stand in the same league with Le Samourai, Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge, Bob Le Flambeur, or Leon Morin, Priest, but it's a strong film.

Other than the two upgrades I've been dying for forever now, I really hope this month brings us a new Godard. My first choice would be something from the 80s or Nouvelle Vague, but it seems those are being left to other labels that are doing great work with later Godard. With MOC's release now OOP, it would be the ideal time for Criterion to put out Une Femme Mariee. If they could add some strong supplements, the only thing that the MOC release lacks, I would easily double dip on it.

I actually don't get that excited for the release of a film I know too well - one that I've seen 3 times or more. What would make me most excited is if they announced something that I recently saw on DVD that was in desperate need of some help. I guess that means that Thief was my favorite release this year if not necessarily the one I enjoyed the most.

I'll take Burroughs the Movie. Naked Lunch needs a companion.

One of my favourite films from the 80s is Détective - something like that would be great!

Not sure I entirely understand it (which is why it needs a Criterion release!); but Natalie Baye looks great in it
