great news for sure!

I wouldn't mind seeing Warner/Warner Archives move on Arsenic and Old Lace either.

I just checked, and I've got 61 out of the 100 titles on the AFI Top 100. I guess it'll be 63 after November.

I have not been specifically aiming to collect movies from that list, but the ones that I own are all deserving of their ranks.

Not at all. His subjects are unusual, but he uses a very traditional documentary style. Fixed camera, and just lets the subjects speak.

I've watched a number of the films available on Hulu and love all of them. Garlic is silly and fun. The Lightning Hopkins one is a stellar look into a great musician.

A definite must-buy for me.

Exactly the two films that came to my mind.

Well, I didn't say I liked it better than the poster. I actually like the poster better bc I think it has a mysterious air to it and the script is lovely. But I do like the cover and think it is a wonderful shot. I'm not positive what theme or emotion it is meant to evoke though.

Nothing here to get me excited. Tootsie is the only one that I've seen and while I very much enjoyed it and would consider picking it up, it's not amazing IMO, a little more mainstream than the typical Criterion title so it's surprising to see it in the collection, even though we've known about it for awhile.

Nice to see L'Avventura announced for those that love the Antonioni films. I'll have to get around to seeing those, and I'll wait for reviews for the others as I'm not overly familiar with them.

yeah, good point. there are others, too.

CC releasing this, IMO, will boost its sales. just seems more along the lines of a film that the original studio would not want to put the effort into regardless of it being Sony.

looking at the list that Brad referenced.. idk.. just seems to have been a terrible mistake considering other films that have spots in the top 30 or so

Damn. I was so close in my predictions but no luck. Maybe next month. L'aventura looks good, I am a fan of L'Eclisse.

Exactly! I am so excited about this release, as I said I am a huge fan of Documentaries and Criterion has released some real gems and this is one I have never heard of, well many - so many to watch and get into, I can NOT wait, shame its last on the list!

So based on the newsletter and new years hints, what does that leave as potentials for December?

- Mulholland Drive
- The Brood
- Midnight Cowboy

I know there are more but it seems like a lot of the hints actually have come to fruition thus far.

In regards to Tootsie being released and being too mainstream..

I have never seen but I have watched trailer and yes it may come across as mainstream, but so what, it look like a fun film and I think its nice to have some easy going/fun film in collection, rather than all serious/important films.

Plus we have other mainstream films, Last Days of Disco for example or even Scanners (not mainstream but it's a film you can sit back and enjoy without having to over think everything). I find it refreshing sometimes seeing a film that you can is back enjoy and not have to think about.

I might get because of those reasons, it seems fun and enjoyable - besides we got a lot of HUGE/amazing releases lately so it balances it out.

This just shows Criterion aren't up themselves and only focusing on releasing film they find important and bold etc etc etc - they are getting other films that people care about from childhood or whenever, and this opens up the Collection to a larger audience which will help support the company - without coming across as sellouts.

L'Avventura, It Happened One Night, and the Hellman disc are all buys for me. I've never seen Tootsie, but maybe that as well. Looks like a pretty solid month. Hopefully a nice December to close out what has been a fantastic year for Criterion.

Tootsie is a movie that has a reputation as being the same kind of light, frivolous movie as say, 9 to 5, or Working Girl, or Mrs. Doubtfire, but it's definitely a few steps above any of them in execution (not to say any of those are bad, they're just not nearly as good). The main characters have real depth and personality and if you give it a chance you'll probably be surprised by just how good it is. I was expecting something light and fluffy and got something that was way better than I was expecting. Jessica Lange in particular is WAY better than you'd expect in this kind of movie (see http://thedissolve.com/features/perf...nge-but-not-f/ for a much better description). It's got a real soul to it and I liked it a ton. I'll definitely be buying it ASAP. Roger Ebert's review is a good read, I agree with him on all points.

I've never seen "It Happened One Night," but it definitely seems like safe blind-buy material, I'll probably get it during the next criterion sale.

I'm looking forward to L'Avventura as well, I've had that DVD sitting in my wishlist for about a year and a half, I'd just been avoiding buying it cause I figured it would come out on bluray sooner or later. My procrastination paid off!

You won't find me complaining about it. It's just that most of their catalogue isn't mainstream so it's an interesting addition. It's a movie that probably should have been released by the original studio, but being put out by Criterion is the best thing that can happen to it. Nothing wrong with any movie getting the best possible treatment.

A bit surprised to not hear any news of a repackage of seperate BD/DVD titles for something else; I was expecting a Nashville standalone for some reason.

Jessica Lange and Geena Davis were drop dead gorgeous in Tootsie so that might be reason enough to pick it up.

Aside from my wishlist (seeming like a pipe dream list as time goes by), I do hope at least that Blue is the Warmest Color special edition comes out in December. I have a feeling it won't. They are probably getting a lot of sales from the current bare bones edition and want to have it out for awhile before making people double dip.

A 2nd volume to the WCF films is all I have been hoping for all year. Hopefully it's a yearly thing for December.

Just here to add my thoughts on November's titles...

L'Avventura is a great addition, and I can't wait to pick up all three in Antonioni's trilogy of sorts in the November sale.

Tootsie is a magnificent film, and it'll be fun to see it again; It's been too long.

It Happened One Night is a whimsical and charming film, and for anyone who hasn't seen it before, It's a safe blind-buy.

I haven't heard of the others, but overall, a solid and satisfying month.
