any other opinions on the other Doinel films? thinking about picking them up.

of course, I know that none are the equivalent of The 400 Blows, but they seem like they might be fun.

I for one am very pleased to see Tootsie released by Criterion. I've always been very fond of this film. While there are some classic comedic moments, I always think of the poignant "wallpaper" scene with Jessica Lange. (It is often the touching moments in comedies that stay with me.)

On a personal level, I remember my mother (whose first language was not English) laughing at Dorothy's motions indicating that the outfit made "her" behind look big.

I purchased it from Australia (JBHifi) along with Hitchcock's "Lifeboat"...if you're looking for something else not available here in order to make the shipping more bearable. Every once in a while they'll have a small sale on blus, which I think I took advantage of....I don't really remember though lol.

It's a god damn great film, one of my absolute favorites.

And here's a stream of consciousness recommendation: I had a very similar reaction to Pale Flower. Aside from being b&w and Japanese they really have very little in common other than the fact that they both hit me in a very, very similar way.
It's on my list to pick up in November.

My memory's failing me - is the Criterion website sale usually in the final weeks of September or October? Planning out some purchases...

I recall feeling rather neutral about it. French film was, to me..... well.. foreign? and the style and manner in which the story unfolds was certainly not something I was used to.

Anyway, it is a wonderful, wonderful film. I can't add much to what has already been said about it. Just great stuff. The Cannes bit and the screen tests were so much fun, too. Priceless-ly cool to see 13 year old Jeanne Pierre Leaud talk about being in movies and whatnot. Every time he pops up in a new Godard film I have recently discovered, it is about as fun as seeing Hitchcock pop up in his own films.

Anyone not like The 400 Blows?

this is a brand new short article on Leaud.. it being so new, I just figured that I'd post it. maybe those who'd be interested have not seen it yet

http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/...08-101saj.html
Yeah The 400 Blows is one of the absolute best coming of age movies. Every time I re watch I am astonished by Leaud's performance. Not a single false note. Also, a goofy personal note..as a massive Joy Division I am always taken aback by how much the kid who portrays his best friend looks like Ian Curtis.

About the ending, if not for the subsequent movies involving the character I would have thought Doinel's life post 400 Blows was difficult. That freeze frame and the roaring sea seemed to indicate turbulent times ahead.

Does anyone know other websites that carry Les Blank films besides Hulu?

Hulu has the following 10 films.

01. God Respects Us When We Work, But Loves Us When We Dance
02. The Blues Accordin' To Lightnin' Hopkins
03. Spend It All
04. A Well Spent Life
05. Dry Wood
06. Always For Pleasure
07. Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe (not part of the set)
08. Garlic Is As Good As Ten Mothers
09. Burden Of Dreams (not part of the set)
10. The Maestro: King Of The Cowboy Artists

Dry Wood, as well as the 1985 documentary short, Cigarette Blues (not part of the set), are also featured on a website called FolkStreams. I also happened to find the shorts, The Sun's Gonna Shine on Vimeo and Mr. Charlie, Your Rollin' Mill Is Burnin' Down on YouTube.

That just leaves 6 full films and 5 shorts to go.

I just recently really started getting into Otis Redding so I'm intrigued to pick up The Monterey Pop Festival. Any thoughts on the set? Seems like a good price from Best Buy.

It's a pretty good set with a lot of nice tunes. I really enjoyed the Otis and Jimi portions.

What kind of sale are we talking about?

50% or less?

And is it a Barnes and Noble 50% off sale in late November/early December a given?

Criterion.com has traditionally had unannounced flash sales twice a year, 50% off MSRP.

The Complete Monterey Pop is an outstanding release.

I confess that I still haven't upgraded to Blu myself, but I play the DVD a lot on my laptop just to listen to it while I'm working on something else.

OK, no problem, iScottie. I asked because I know you always create official threads, but I could not find one. (Sometimes the search system does not pull out all threads).
