Negative: you spent too much money on those blurays!

Positive: Kiss Me Deadly is an awesome film noir.

Kiss Me Deadly is one of the finest titles in The Criterion Collection, and it has perhaps the greatest opening credits sequence of any movie in history.

Kiss Me Deadly is fantastic! One of the best noirs of the 50s.

Last Temptation of Christ is great as well. My very first Criterion purchase, back in the DVD days, and long since upgraded to Blu.

Kiss Me Deadly is so unique and intriguing for its time - a must-own, IMO. Some folks aren't a fan of how the story wraps up, but I absolutely loved it.

I watched Autumn Sonata the other night, and thought it was outstanding. It definitely takes some patience to sit through what amounts to a film that's only dialogue, but I thought it was well worth it.

That said, I have been eying the Bergman trilogy (Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light, and The Silence) for quite some time now, in hopes that a blu-ray upgrade would be around the corner - but I finally succumbed to the Best Buy sale today and pulled the trigger on the faith trilogy (DVD), as well as Scenes from a Marriage (also DVD).

Bring on more Bergman!

Great decision on the Bergman purchase.

Your avatar is my favorite Paul Newman movie The Hustler with the man Jackie Gleason "Minnesota Fats". If there is any movie that defines cool, this is it. The Color of Money was a poor sequel to such a perfect film. Scorsese admitted that he needed money to fund one of his films (if I recall correctly it was The Last Temptation of Christ).

Yeah, it's pretty much an accepted fact that The Hustler is superior to The Color of Money in every way. I'm a huge Scorsese fan, but it's very much towards the bottom of his filmography. A few scenes (Werewolves of London) are a standout, but the rest of the film is mediocre.

While it could be considered arguable what the greatest baseball film is, or the greatest boxing film, there's not been another film made about billiards, ever, that nears The Hustler in quality.

Assuming this type of existential subject matter appeals to you, you will most definitely NOT regret this purchase. Most films can wait for an upgrade, some -- like these -- just need to be seen.

Yes, I very much am into Bergman. While his more accessible Fanny and Alexander is my favorite film of his, thus far, I've also seen, and loved: Persona, Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, Autumn Sonata, and Smiles of a Summer Night.

No doubt this trilogy will be quite a watch for me.

I totally agree, the Werewolves of London scene is best part of the sequel (partly due to the great song, Scorsese has an art in picking some of the best rock songs).

I love the cinematography as well as the film editing in The Hustler; it had a west coast cool "jazz" feel to it. George C. Scott is phenomenal in this film. Overall it just has a superb cast.

I wish I could accurately put into words how much I admire this film but I just can't...it's beautiful, tragic, and blends personal and political issues in such a way that nothing seems over the top or redundant.

To make a long story short, this should be in everyone's collection.
I love this film and grew up watching it. I'm excited Criterion released it on blu. Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna are great together. I also love the other film they did together "Rudo y Cursi" directed by Alfonso's brother Carlos Cuaron. I'm not sure how well the jokes translate thou.
Ive always wondered that whenever I watch foreign films. Like say, Band of Outsiders, are there jokes that are lost in translation? Am I missing something not knowing French? I don't see how I can love that film more thou

Not a movie but, the closest one I can think of is The Twilight Zone episode "A Game of Pool" which is excellent.

I love that episode. Jack Klugman and Jonathan Winters for the win.

I'm not entirely sure.

It seems as if a lot of things sound better and make more sense when spoken in the native language. That being said, I would assume that some things are ultimately lost.

Yeah, I'm in Australia, so I'm region B, but went region free to get into Criterion. I wish they'd have announced an upgrade of ST before the Arrow one came out, but it's one of my very favourite films, so I don't think I'll be waiting, unless the review isn't glowing...

Here is the best analogy about translation ever written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra from his masterpiece Don Quixote:

"Translating from one language to another, unless it is from Greek and Latin, the queens of all languages, is like looking at Flemish tapestries from the wrong side, for although the figures are visible, they are covered by threads that obscure them, and cannot be seen with the smoothness and color of the right side."
