Well certain TV manufacturers of high-end stuff, like LG and Samsung, typically offer a very calibrated picture on their standard setting. So much so that it is useless to calibrate it. In that way the guy is right. I mean it doesn't take a genius to calibrate a TV in design stage anymore.

Now talking settings and such yes it is insane how many people leave the crazy stuff from factory on. They should not even have those certain 'dynamic' settings on from factory imho as they are entirely detrimental to the picture. It's gotten better for the most part in recent years.

For example, I had 300+ blu-rays and remember messing around with settings one day, turning off overscan, and realising I'd been watching a cropped picture for as long as I'd owned my TV.
I don't get why someone would be annoyed at Lynch for wanting people to see the best picture possible.

Well I understand how one might feel dumbed down by this take from Lynch, but on the other end, I wish more discs would allow me to ensure my TV is properly set up.

Doesn't criterion put colour bars on every disc for calibration uses?

Does anyone have experience with defective Blu-Rays picked up during BN 50% off sales ? I picked up over 100 titles between the last 3-4 sales (upgraded a lot of DVDs) but haven't watched most of them yet (was in no hurry for movies I have already seen on DVD). I was watching Summer Hours yesterday and halfway through the movie it started pixelating badly to the point it was unwatchable. I think the problem area extends 10-15 minutes and the movie is playable after that. The disc seems pristine - no scratches, dust or anything I could notice.

I am outside of the 14-day BN return/exchange window. What options do I have other than buying a new copy of the movie ? I am also worried about all the other discs that I may not get around to watching for years.

I know Criterion exchanges discs with known defects that they have issue a second printing for. Do they also exchange discs with random defects like these ?

Thanks,
Deep

Myself and several others have had an issue with Summer Hours. I returned my copy and purchased a new one and it seemed to work fine.

I'd rather do than than nod off without knowing it during a movie. That has happened to me before. I went to see the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie at the theater several years ago in the afternoon when I was tired from work, and, although I was interested in the film, there were a handful of times when I dozed off and did not realize it at all. After the film ended, I was completely unaware that I had slept at any point, because the film had seemed to flow perfectly for me. A year or so later, when I was watching the DVD with others at a friend's house, though, I kept seeing moments that I had no idea were in the film (Elizabeth burning the rum in front of Jack Sparrow on the island, etc.). Pretty funny.

It's also not uncommon for me to pause a Blu-ray once or twice for some reason or another, whether it's just to grab a drink from the refrigerator or to wait a few seconds while the landscape people at my apartment finishing working on the plants with a weed-eater right below my window.

I like to watch my movies in absolute silence with undivided attention, and I prefer to do so completely uninterrupted, but I'm glad that the glorious miracle of home video viewing allows me to pause the picture from time to time or even stop it altogether if needed.

So I try to watch the film earlier in the evening but sometimes when I start it later, I have to accept the possibility that I may start falling asleep and losing my attention (and that is usually if the film or content isn't particularly riveting).

Good to hear you also treat your films with undivided attention.
Same here. That's why if it's late at night and I'm selecting something to watch, I won't choose something I am really looking forward to, or something I want to give my full attention to rather than just a fun, brainless flick to throw on. I don't want to risk falling asleep, so I don't choose epic length movies like Seven Samurai or Lawrence of Arabia (still haven't watched those ).

... trying to decide whether to upgrade my Criterion Salo DVD to blu during the current Best Buy sale.

I've watched the film a couple of times (been a few years) and know I will revisit eventually because, even though it is thoroughly repulsive, I appreciate its singularly unique themes.

My question is: is the upgrade in PQ worth being even more disgusted? Will I be more apt to heave? Is it safer to just appreciate through a slightly hazier lens?

What say you?

I would say upgrade, I have and have no regrets really, not watched DVD in a while so can't say for sure how they compare in person >.< can you rent the bluray from anywhere beforehand to decide?

Thanks. I will probably end up upgrading, either now or during one of the B&N sales. Ironically I just read another review of the BD that says the upgrade in quality makes it more plain that some of the worst violence is presented using makeup. So, there ya go.

Hmmm I never noticed that myself - need to watch again and look out for that, guess thats only problem with high def films haha!

I'd always go for the Bluray version of a film now if possible :P wish I bought bluray from start when collecting cause I have so many to upgrade lol

This has nothing to dow with film, but i prefer the dvd packaging, the panoramic image is more impressive and I love how thick the digipak is haha!

Need some help guys!

Does anyone know where I can buy replacement cases for:

Last Year at Marienbad & The Man Who Fell to Earth?

I love the digipaks so much but so scared to handle too much and would love plastic case versions...

Criterio don't have nay stock left to offer replacements and UK Ebay does have any :/ - Someone was selling Chungking Express case, but I already have it haha.
Worse case scenario ill have to make myself but just a bit harder with the Last Year due to the embossing.

well there are no shops that sell them anymore , same for criterion.
what you could do is look for a scan of the cover and print it yourself and buy a empty criterion case.

Looks like The Leopard is getting a plastic case rerelease? The digipak is gorgeous so why would they do that! :P

And Babettes Feast? They are both showing a preorder of DVDWORLDUSA... November 4th release.

I do think its nice they are offering plastic case versions of films, but wish they would keep digipaks, so you buy digipak and if you want plastic you pay $5 for replacement case.

or making plastic cases "the standard" release for everything expect boxsets. and offer digipacks only at their shop (maybe 10$ each)

i think most of the hate that "dual format" received was because of the big digipacks.

Yah that could work, id happily pay extra for digipak, but not on their site as I'm from UK :P

Yah we all like different things, I personally prefer the bigger digipaks, more artwork and they stand out on shelf and look more expensive and look so nice.
