I don't want to be nitpicking, but why doesn't Criterion include ordinary English subtitles, next to the hearing impaired ones? Some people find the other ones funny, and some even annoying. I don't think that including them would be a problem for Criterion. It could probably be done in a matter of seconds: Just have a computer program remove all the subtitles that are within the "[]" types of parentheses.

You actually bought Carlos on blu-ray? How is the film? I've been interested in getting it.

I think this has come up before, have you tried hitting the subtitle button on your remote? Sometimes SDH subs are 'hidden'.

It's fantastic. Edgar Ramirez is incredible, it's an interesting story that never gets preachy or heavy-handed, it looks great and they create a very convincing 70s/80s atmosphere without going overboard with cheesy pop culture hooks (the score/sountrack - which is pretty great in its own right - gets a lot of the credit for that).

Yeah, the subtitles on Carlos flat out don't make sense. They have English subtitles for all the other movies where English is spoken, but in Carlos they only have them in non-English speaking parts. Yet if it was 100% spoken in English, then they would. That's another option they could included for movies like this - subtitles for everything or subtitles for only non-English speaking parts.

IMO, one of the better movies made in recent years -if you consider it a movie that is and not a TV series, it can be considered as both. The vast majority of people consider it better than Che from the similar genre, if you can use that as a reference.

My entire afternoon was spent watching the television version of Fanny and Alexander and I cannot even put into words the joys and the sorrows that I experienced from the very first frame to the final word uttered. For a film that runs for approximately five-and-a-half hours, it sure went by incredibly fast.

Ingmar Bergman is one of few directors to live who seemed to just understand film. Film goes beyond style and substance and there-in lies the key to Bergman's body of work and the mystery that is the cinema.

Fanny and Alexander so perfectly and naturally blends such rich themes and concepts as family, religion, customs and traditions, tragedy, and the surreal in order to create a picture that directly relates to its viewers. The film is essentially a mirror image of real life where, at its core, it displays how life is the furthest thing from perfect and how anything can happen at any given point in time. The important thing to remember is that no matter how bad something may seem, it is important to not give up. No one knows for certain how the universe operates.

To make a long story short, Fanny and Alexander is officially my favorite Bergman film, one of my favorite films of all-time, and one of the films that I can see myself rewatching on a yearly basis.

I broke down today, and decided to use the Picture Wizard on my LG television. Interestingly enough, the numbers that Nick Wrigley recommends in the above link are almost a perfect match with the results of my Picture Wizard tweaking. What I came up with and saved as the Expert1 Mode is not far removed from what my Cinema Mode has looked like from the beginning, except that the contrast and and brightness are slightly, only slightly, higher than on the Cinema Mode. I'll be sticking with these new settings on my television from now on, in all likelihood.

I put this to the test today by watching Cool Hand Luke, which I purchased a couple of weeks back. I cannot believe that I only just now saw this movie for the first time.

Just read the review on this site for Eraserhead. It looks fantastic! Besides being a very unique and groundbreaking film by a talented director, the supplemental package looks to be one of the nicest in a long while. I'm looking forward to picking this one up.

Glad you liked it. I've been watching it every winter for 3-4 years and enjoying it even more on subsequent viewings.

It's hard to point to just one memorable scene in the film because there are so many. The same can be said for the acting, direction and writing. I'd could pick one example for each but feel I'd be doing the film a disservice by not mentioning everything possible I love about the film.

I honestly forgot I was watching a movie for the duration of the film because it is so incredibly realistic and the acting is just out of this world. It's weird to see the lack of frequent collaborators, but they did a stellar job.

I really liked the set designs and clothing / make-up. It's always cool to see a throwback to past fashion.

Carlos might be the best film I've seen in 10+ years.

I really hope so. But then again, WD is owned by Warner Brothers, and Criterion rarely deals with them. But like you said, since criterion did the remaster there is a slim chance. Let's cross our fingers and wait!

Both of these films have well demarcated intermissions between the first and second halves, so you might consider splitting them over 2 nights.

Finally watched Black Narcissus and it was everything I was hoping for and more.

The ending is just simply amazing.

[Show spoiler]That shot of Kathleen Byron's face (Sister Ruth) when she opens the door at the end with her eyes as horrifying as possible with wet hair made me nearly jump off the couch. That shot alone was worth the purchase. Wow, talk about a sister going mad.

[Show spoiler]Furthermore, I didn't even realize that the whole film was shot at Pinewood studios. I wanted to limit the information I knew going into watching this film but I thought I read somewhere that this film was actually shot in India. Then, later in the supplements I learn it was all shot in a studio and yet looks more real than CGI today or even, as French director Bertrand Tavernier said, "A Passage to India" by David Lean.

Phenomenal philm!
