Umberto D. Arrived today, I know nothing about this film, except its emotional? Was an impulse buy on Ebay, I doubt I will hate or dislike it
![]() The only thing that came across as odd to me was the witches? (from trailer)... |

Really though Hulu Plus is an amazing service and you can't go wrong with them having damn near the entire Criterion Collection, I only wish they would work on the commercial breaks. They should create a commercial a little less inconspicuous at the bottom of the screen that has no sound that you can read then it goes away.

Allegedly, Gilliam's The Fisher King will be joining the collection at some point in the future as confirmed by director himself at DragonCon, but there's no proof whatsoever to back up this claim.

So, I've started making my October viewing list. I respect this thread's opinions more than most, so what do y'all suggest I add?
- Repulsion - Hour of the Wolf - Picnic at Hanging Rock* - The Fly (1986) - The Thing (1982) - Nosferatu (1922) - Martin - Evil Dead - Don't Look Now* - Antichrist - Night of the Living Dead (1968) * = never watched before There's a lot of obvious stuff on this list, so any suggestions to take me into new territory are appreciated (if it's on Hulu that's a big plus as well). |

- Picnic at Hanging Rock , awesome movie. comes with the book. the pictures will stay with you. but its really a "strange" movie. i would avoid reviews and trailers and just jump into it...
Antichrist is great. but you have to be into odd and curious movies i quess... |

I'd also throw in Eyes Without a Face (on Hulu), The Vanishing (on Hulu), Herzog's Nosferatu, Diabolique (on Hulu), and maybe even Black Narcissus.

Ditto re: Picnic on Hanging Rock; Superb Australian film, and one of my favorite '70's movies. Agree that you should go into this without reading much about it, so you'll be genuinely surprised.
Don't Look Now is incredible; very creepy film... As for what's not already on the list, here are some suggestions: Let's Scare Jessica to Death Burnt Offerings The Sentinel (1977 horror flick, not the 200x thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland) Silent Hill 1 (2006) Dawn of the Dead original & re-make (1978 & 2004) The Mist The Ring (2002) |

It's been many a moon since I've seen The Vanishing. I'd say it's time for another round. Honestly, I see no reason for Herzog's Nosferatu to exist. I don't think it added anything to the original. I love Herzog, but I view this just as a love letter with nothing more to say. Definately adding Diabolique to the list. Haven't seen it, but heard nothing but great things. Thanks for the suggestion; forgot about that one. Never seen anything by Powell and Pressburger (this post is full of blasphemy). I need to rectify this. |

Happy Labor Day to all the other Americans here.
I just finished watching the last 2 documentaries in the Eclipse series #2: The Documentaries of Louis Malle and they were outstanding. God's Country is just a totally fascinating look into late 1970s midwest suburban small town America and then Malle returned again 6 years later to check up on the people he interviewed and not much had changed other than the political landscape and harsher times for small farmers. Then I saw ...And the Pursuit of Happiness and that was just amazing. Malle's travels all over the USA combined with finding some amazing immigrants from all over the world was nothing short of remarkable. I was reminded of another Criterion title: ˇAlambrista!, when watching some parts of this documentary film (especially the shots of the immigrants waiting for work on the corner of La Brea and Pico Blvds in LA). I actually enjoyed these latter day Malle documentaries far more than his more legendary production of Phantom India. If anyone here loves good historical and sociological documentaries, I highly recommend checking out this set. It's on HULU Plus as far as I know. ![]() Last edited by jw007; 09-01-2014 at 06:55 PM. |
