Manufactured-on-Demand.

Basically, DVD-Rs. Not even properly done discs or anything.

It is heartbreaking to find out these great titles will probably never see the light of day on Blu-ray again or ever. Studio Canal really f--ked up not letting Criterion retain the rights. Lionsgate is a garbage dump company, they have no respect for film.

On DV freaking D? I was so excited going through the titles til I got to that little tidbit.

Maybe they're just gonna milk them On Demand for awhile and then let Crit buy the rights again. It's pretty clear they can't figure out how to get the margin they want on these titles.

It pains me to see masterpieces like Marienbad put into DVD-R purgatory. A sad day for film.
Man, this does not bode well for the future of home video. I'm not sure which part pisses me off more:

DVD only and only via Amazon
DVD-R
HD but only via iTunes

Is physical HD media truly dying? Seems like the major companies are all giving up on it, either through out-sourcing, neglect or both, which is a shame. Nothing can replace a good physical Blu Ray with artwork and notes and special features and sadly, nothing will.

Amen.

StudioCanal does not seem to care at all about putting anything out. At least The Criterion Collection made them a good sum of money when they licensed the films through them, no? It's as if they retained the rights on spite.

That's why I'm glad studios like Criterion, Shout and all boutique labels exist. That's also why I don't buy from many major companies or big name movie blockbusters. I'd much rather give my all of my money to companies who need and champion physical media. I don't think it's necessarily dying but I think the move is more noticeable in the last year.

I was being sarcastic with my "great news." (Someone really needs to invent a sarcasm font, I thought this at the end would've made that clear), just wanted to point out how awful Lionsgate is.

There is a lot of idiocy/unintentional comedy in that press release (i.e. "a collection of eight critically acclaimed French Nouvelle Vague films" ... Billy Liar and Darling and 1947's Quai des Orfèvres )

I could see maybe Studio Canal wanted to get revenue from Digital Downloads. But these are not really the type of films that the youth are craving to add to their collection along with The Hunger Games. These titles belong to Criterion to release, and for collectors to own. My guess is eventually they will go back to Criterion. But in the meantime....

Dear StudioCanal,

Release these on Blu-ray or GTFO.

Sincerely,

Touchez Pas Au Grisbi and Le Trou are both superb Criterion DVD titles, and they deserve better.

My movie shelves are in four sections.

1st - foreign by blu-ray /country/director/ alphabetical
foreign DVD alphabetical by title

2nd - Japanese blu-ray & DVD by Director if I have 3 or more / alphabetical

3rd - US blu-ray by title alphabetical
US DVDs by title alphabetical

4th - Concerts by artist alphabetical
Documentaries by subject

Database for more info that I just started and I'm at the "I"s in section 3 blu-rays and I have a little over 1400 and I have no problem locating any of them.

The person or persons responsible for the decision to relegate a work of art like Last Year at Marienbad to dvd/mod should be held accountable. A public tarring and feathering is in order.

Yeah, those people need a three-hour nonstop ice bucket challenge, methinks, and the videos need to be posted all over the world.

Last Year at Marienbad is just so amazing in proper high definition that it hurts to think of most people on these shores having to rely on streaming or DVD.

On the big screen the film is totally hypnotic. For me it's in league with Lawrence of Arabia 4K on the big screen. Incredible movie-going experience.

Well, keep in mind that this is not really StudioCanal's doing, except by association. It's Lionsgate's doing. If I understand the situation correctly, StudioCanal didn't want to license their assets title by title. They wanted to license the whole shebang. Criterion didn't want to do that. Lionsgate apparently did. I think they just didn't reckon on the fact the That Obscure Object of Desire and Contempt aren't going to sell as many copies as Kick-Ass.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

Regarding the films of Wes Anderson on Criterion. Would you people recommend The Darleejing Limited for a purchase? I've seen every other Anderson film and I've enjoyed all of them, to lesser degrees of course, but still enjoyment has been had. So what say you about the question?

Obviously this is for Wes Anderson fans, not for people to trumpet how badly they think his films are. Different strokes and all.

If you've enjoyed all of his other films, then the answer to your question is a resounding yes.

If you like his films, I think it's a safe bet. It looks amazing on Blu Ray. It feels a little more slight than his other films for some reason, but I really enjoy it.

I'm not a Wes Anderson fan, but I think The Darjeeling Limited is one of his better films.

Thanks for the replies. Is it time for a ranking of favourite Wes Anderson films?

I have also not seen The Fantastic Mr. Fox yet.
