I use to have that luxury. I also had a bartender that made me drinks while I waited.

Ugh, a criterion thread and people are discussing Wes Anderson? It is like getting a big mac. This is why criterion is afraid of releasing obscure titles, people just want the 'comfort food'

Heaven forbid people discuss Criterion releases in the Criterion thread!

Yes, because the only thing Criterion releases is quirky, "comfort food" titles.

We need more Buñuel films in the collection. One just does not cut it anymore.

Speaking of comfort food, have you watched Babette's Feast yet?

I own 38 Lionsgate titles, many of them great movies, some not so good, and one of them is your avatar.

GRAND ILLUSION is the only one I can think of off hand that approaches Criterion quality, both in picture and in supplements. I think there may be a few other movies, mostly more recent titles, that look halfway decent but even some of those suffer from DNR (e.g. Polanski's THE NINTH GATE).

Just finished watching The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and after seeing first Lola and Bay of Angels and being a fan of musicals i must say i am underwhelmed

I really liked both previous films so i had high hopes for this one, anyway here are the issues i found:

First a technical aspect that may be causing some of the other issues, i am not sure why this has 5.1 sound, all of the music seems to come from the front and maybe right and left speakers and doesn't sound very full, it seems that the instrumental track is too quiet or the voices too high on most scenes which is a bit distracting considering there are some small distortions on some of the high pitched voices, this really took me out of the movie.

Second, this may be because i am very used to Hollywood musicals but overall i didn't enjoy very much the music even tough i really love Legrand music on other films, also liked the main theme of this one and one or two other tunes but the problem is that most of the film is just made of really small tunes like the transition parts of an opera, at time i wondered why they bothered and didn't instead have some parts just be spoken regularly.

Finally the staging of most of the scenes felt very dull and unimaginative, the more i think about it it seems like this was intended as an anti Hollywood musical, and in the end i think it could probably worked much better if it was filmed as a traditional film instead.

I was still moved by the story but for now it can't top Demy previous films for me, maybe i entered this with all the wrong expectations so i will try and see it again later after i finish the box set and extras
