I just watched Babette's Feast and it was surprisingly moving. I didn't expect to become emotional towards the end of the film and I was more worried I'd lose interest while watching this film. Instead, I was totally engaged, despite the story being very slow and mostly uneventful. Has anyone else seen this film or bought it for their movie collections?

I watched the Blu-ray of Under the Skin a few nights ago, and it's still my favorite movie of the year so far (although Cold in July comes close).

I've got no real problems with the Lionsgate Blu-ray of Under the Skin, because, for the most part, it's a great representation of my two experiences seeing the movie in the theater. I just wish that Lionsgate had put more juice under the hood for this movie instead of just releasing it on a 25GB disc. I had the same issue with the Magnolia Pictures Blu-ray of Malick's To the Wonder, which was also released on these shores with a 25GB disc. Both movies deserve a royal treatment and maxed-out discs.

Something tells me your opinion will change once you see both Boyhood and The Rover.

I don't know. The Force is pretty strong with Under the Skin, and it continues to blow me away after three viewings.

I do really want to see Boyhood, but I somehow let it pass me by when it played here in Atlanta a few weeks back. The Rover looks promising as well. I also want to see Anton Corbijn's A Most Wanted Man.

My take on that is that there will probably be a blu ray release of Darling somewhere down the road. It is probably the most "mainstream" title on the list and I can't think of any other reason the others would get a DVD release but not Darling. Julie Christie FTW!

I, too, need to see "A Most Wanted Man".

I enjoy Anton Corbijn from "The American", one of the best films of 2010. Furthermore, I've been watching John Le Carré adaptations lately. I've only seen "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold", which I was underwhelmed by, and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy", which I thought was rather good.

Boyhood is great, I saw it last week in a small local theater. Seeing the lead actor who went from a boy to a young man during the course of the film was a revelation. It dragged in bits probably due to its length, but the actor's character was so likable, a real decent human being. I'm sure there will probably be alot of deleted scenes if & when Criterion releases their version.

Away From Her is not even on blu-ray. They could at least sell part of it on Nina Dobrev's cameo.

Maybe not Darling, but the other two films have been met with resounding critical approval - especially the Clouzot film.

Except for the fact that the UK release is region free and, of course, we have the CC release that nearly everyone complaining already owns. Speaking of the UK release... a brand new copy just went for $6.91 last night on eBay

That Obscure Object of Desire is loaded w/ bonus features and its AV has been met with good reviews.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

I ended up watching The Petrified Forest last night and enjoyed it as well. I would rank it behind White Heat as my favorite of the Ultimate Gangsters Classic Boxset now. Very good performances by the leads, especially Betty Davis and Humphrey Bogart. The ending was pretty good as well, that last scene was definitely memorable. I cannot recommend this boxset anymore than I already have the other day, if you're into classic films or gangster films then you owe it to yourself to get it.

Favorite movie by far for me is Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive. I think about that film often. I think its one of the most original films to have come along in years. Boyhood is also one of my favorites of 2014 too. Under the Skin is in the bottom of the barrel for me. Funny I haven't changed my avatar yet though.

I loved OLLA but for me UTS was far superior for me, she was unrecognisable in that film and felt so alien and detached from people, she was incredible and probably her best performance in her career, although I adore her in Lost in Translation - her portrayal came across as so real and human. UTS had an incredible atmosphere and the score blew me away, it is such tragic film and full of emotion and detachment... quite similar to OLLA tbh I just found UTS stayed with me longer an had the bigger impact.

Both superb films though! only wish Mia had a bigger role in OLLA but I get why she didn't.

I don't even want to discuss Boyhood, I just found it terrible.

I dunno what my favourite film is this year - Nymphomaniac frustrates me, I am a huge Lars Von Trier fan and I adore NYmphomaniac, at times it annoys me but it is a very funny and incredible film, I think I will know for sure whether its a great film when I see full uncut, the film doesn't feel like 4 hours 30 mins though.

Main parts that bugged me are the obvious references to his other films which got a tad annoying - the WORST scene that should have been cut was the floating scene when she reaches O - I found that scene so badly done and tacky :/ but oh well - all films has its flaws I suppose.

Unrelated, but have you heard the new U2 album, Songs of Innocence, that was released for free on iTunes yesterday? I'm sure that you have, since I know that you're a superfan.

My first impression after a few listens is that Songs of Innocence might be U2's most humble album to date. It's certainly one of their most introspective albums. I love that the album opens with a heartfelt ode to the effect that the Ramones had on the musical direction of the band, and I love that other songs, namely "Iris", dwell on the impact of family and friends on our lives.

U2 are not firing on all cylinders with this new album like they did back in the 1980s and 1990s, but they're still making some strong tracks. The standouts for me so far are "Every Breaking Wave", "The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)", and "Volcano."
