It's a great album for what it is but its in another era for the band. When Rattle & Hum was released at the end of the decade, the band all but nearly split up from frustrations over how pretentious their music was and how they weren't meshing. This was all rectified with Achtung Baby though, an amazing sonic exploration of dance music and rock and roll fused together into a brilliant masterpiece that is more re-playable than any other U2 album. Even 1997's Pop is their last ambitious, raw effort before they became a marketing group called: "U2", with their overproduction and irritating perfectionism in studio albums. By the 2000s, U2 were washed up and they played it safe with All That You Can't Leave Behind and the followup (How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb), a lukewarm affair. No Line on the Horizon was too unfocused. And now we have Songs of Innocence, still something to be determined in U2's long running canon of work.
My personal favorite U2 album is The Unforgettable Fire, with Boy at a close second. My favorite song by the band is "Out of Control."

I agree that Pop was U2's last adventurous album, although the subsequent albums all have some excellent tracks. I just get the feeling that All That You Can't Leave Behind, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, and No Line on the Horizon were made specifically for the mp3 listener and no so much to be listened to as full albums.

I'll give U2 credit for not having a disastrous downward career trajectory as many other bands of their stature have (R.E.M.'s post-Bill Berry material comes to mind.). They are definitely starting to get creaky in the joints, though.

That is a big part of my anticipation for this title.

I saw the whole film on youtube and fell in love with it awhile back and was thrilled when Criterion first announced its release. I hope to get it on release day for a good price.

I'm hoping that Costco has this available for 19.99 as well as Macbeth, & Eraserhead eventually. They've been selling English langauge films from Criterion only. I guess they've made the assumption that Costco customers can't be bothered with Foreign language films released by Criterion.

Barnes & Noble has Sundays & Cybele 29.01 as a pre-order. I hope a coupon shows up before then, but I doubt it.

If there is no FLASH SALE I will probably go with B&N also.

The only foreign language Criterion I've seen there recently has been Seven Samurai.

I hate to break it to you, but the leaflet for "The Innocents" appears to be the same. See the screenshots in the review.

Oh well...

Default Criterion give-away

The major studios all seem to furnish this site with free blu-rays to give away on this site. I don't believe any of the boutique labels have giveaways.

Criterion could be the first. 1 Blu-ray up for contest each month would promote their brand well and probably get the word out to consumers unfamiliar with Crit Co.

Also, many of us purchase dozens of Criterion Blu-rays a year. It would be a nice gesture!

For Canadian Criterion fans, L'avventura is available for preorder on amazon.ca for 23.09 plus tax. A very fair price for a brand new Criterion.

Well if they had to pick one that is an excellent chance.
