I am glad to see some fans of Buñuel on this thread. I would love an Eclipse set with his Mexican films. The most popular film of that era of Buñuel is The Exterminating Angel. Some of the other films are hard to come by (poorly transferred DVDs).

Today i watched The Young Girls of Rochefort and thought it was great, more in line with what i was expecting of a proper musical (and i don't mean only the cheerfulness) i found puzzling how the songs were all better sung than in Umbrellas of Cherbourg until i saw on the review here that almost everyone singing is dubbed.

After a little more research it turns out that the singing was dubbed on Umbrellas too, so i am not sure why Svet mentions that in that one the parts are sung by the cast.

Hello.
I was wondering if anyone here could recommend any Criterion films that have an autumn setting. (except Autumn Sonata) Mainly up to 1995.

Days Of Heaven and All That Heaven Allows are good ones, so much so that I've saved my copy of the recent Blu-ray of the latter for an Autumnal first viewing. There's the Ozu autumn movies too.

It's post-1995 but should not be missed.

that is interesting. I looked it up to find out more. it isn't the entire speaking part that is dubbed, though, is it? i think it is just the proper songs.

I agree with what you said yesterday - that parts of the dialogue could have just as well been spoken and may have been better off for it. somehow, (for me) however,) it is pulled off rather nicely. Genevieve and her mother are having a rather serious conversation at the beginning of the second act in the shop... one would imagine that proper inflection would be necessary for the scene to have any dramatic resonance, but somehow... it works.

for me, the movie is magical - the colors, the likable characters... as for the songs, with music sometimes it takes familiarity to breed appreciation... I liked the songs well enough, but am expecting to like them more next time around.

looking forward to TYGoR! I still have the set out from the library.

I agree. I absolutely despise the movie.

With Arrow releasing Salvatore Giuliano overseas, any reason to expect Criterion might be about to announce an upgrade stateside?

It's my favorite Orpheus adaptation from what I've seen.

The narrative does lose my interest a bit towards the end, but it's really well-made.

Well the material is certainly there. So it's defiantly possible.
It'll be interesting to see if Criterion announce an upgrade of that or Brute Force Monday.

It's so colorful and the music is such an integral part of the film, as well. The leads are two of the most attractive people ever seen on film, IMO, and I found it ironic that, in real life, they passed away within little more than a month of one another. Life imitating art, maybe?

I believe I read that somewhere. Talk about a strange coincidence.

Does anyone remember if there was a flash-sale in September of last year?

According to my Criterion account, I placed an order in September of 2012, but not 2013. If there was one, I am not sure why I would have skipped out.

Thanks in advance.

It was on October 1st last year. 2012 and 2011 were both in September. I've got my list ready to go patiently waiting for this years announcement.
