And comes from the days when uber-cerebral 2001 was coin of the realm for all sci-fi movies everywhere. Especially from a director who had never seen the TV show in his life.
Nicholas Meyer was the best thing to ever happen to Star Trek, period. I can't imagine what The Original Series would have been like had he been one of the writers in that show (he was in his early 20s then, a prime age for television writing).

Yeah, I'll take 2001: A Space Odyssey or Star Trek The Motion Picture over today's sci fi any day. People today have too much Attention deficit disorder to appreciate/sit through long films like those but not me!

Well, that was actually a complaint, since I thought it would be unfair to make the artsy-clueless Ang Lee/Hulk comparison to Robert Wise, merited though it might be--
They tease us with a Klingon ship in the first scene, and then spend TWO AND A HALF HOURS saying "My god, Nomad's full of stars".
Somebody sit this guy down and make him watch Amok Time or City on the Edge of Forever. Or even The Corbomite Maneuver.

Meyer, OTOH, could put a Klingon murder-mystery into The Undiscovered Country, and make TOS Trek instantly mainstream-accessible to even the most geek-skeptic newbie.

I went to see the 2009 Star Trek reboot at the theater. Five minutes after I left the theater, I had already forgotten what the movie was all about. Everything looked good, but it was all just a forgettable blur of digital effects and lens flares.

Had I been blessed with the finances to do so, I would stood by the exit door after that film and handed out free copies of Tarkovsky's Solaris to everyone as they walked out.

That 2009 movie really made me miss the weeks after my theatrical viewing of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan back in 1982, when I had replayed scenes from the movie over and over in my mind, and pondered the philosophies of the story.

I tend to find film set in medieval era a tad slow and boring and at times I had this with Macbeth, but my god it was a superb film and I'm glad i blind bought it, it was so dark and had some really strong images that stuck with me - the cinematography was brilliant as was direction, and the acting was great - I also love date special effect used to add that extra bit of mystery and magic to the film, in a non cheese way.

I also LOOOOVED the witched haha

It does look nice. I hadn't seen it in ages (VHS era) but I'm still kinda lukewarm to it. I'd like to see Crash come to the CC before those
[Show spoiler]puckered-up "kids"
get a Blu-ray release.

Glad to hear great minds think alike. It's all style over substance nowadays. I feel that Tarkovsky's Solaris is the epitome of an arthouse/intellectual sci fi film, and I guess Abrams' Trek is epitome of a brainless/blockbuster sci fi film. I like it somewhere in the middle but closer to the vein of the intellectual/spiritual sci fi movie. I guess that's why Star Wars had it all for everyone (action, spirituality, philosophy, comedy and romance), but in the end its TOS Trek that does it for me.

It's a different take on Star Trek, just because it's more action and special effects heavy doesn't mean it's completely "brainless".

I always gravitated to the original five Planet of the Apes films and to the 1970s Planet of the Apes television series.

I might spring for the original Star Trek series the next time that a huge sale comes down the pipes, although I've got a lot of unwatched stuff on my plate. I used to enjoy that show when I was kid. I've held off on buying it so far.

About that time of year again, yeah.

I'm hoping it's on or after 30 September so I can get Ali: Fear Eats the Soul sooner rather than later. Nothing is being released 7 October, so maybe then?

Just want to say that when a Criterion blu-ray loads, the logo looks like some dude looking down into a well (I, the viewer, am at the bottom of the well). It is fairly entertaining. Enjoy.

If I had to venture a guess I would say October 7th, only because they have no films being released that date, which could facilitate a simple sale with no other films being released that day. But fingers crossed for September 30th.

Can't find the info, why are they going to replace it?

nevermind, just found it on the movie thread, seems weird since they still haven't acknowledge the Summer Hours disc rot issue, there are still people on that thread that sent mails and have not been answered.

This week's Criterion iTunes additions include The Vanishing (coming on blu soon) as well as Jules Dassin's The Naked City (hopefully slated for blu soon).
