I've been in a "Western" kind of phase lately and I plan to follow this up with Red River.

I watched O Brother, Where Art Thou? a few nights ago and that was a bit of a western road film on Homer's Odyssey.

I don't own too many Westerns in my film collection but I do have a few others I plan to watch after Red River next. That will be the classic Dances With Wolves of course (which I've already seen 4 times), and then My Darling Clementine (which I have to wait until it is released in October of course).
I'm glad that you enjoyed Stagecoach. I have a theory that about a third of the movies that have been released since Stagecoach have followed its blueprint.

If you have not yet seen 3:10 to Yuma (1957), then I heartily recommend it as an addition to your Westerns lineup.

Red River is brilliant.

I think I may have to do that. I have never listened to a commentary before so maybe this is the right time for one.

Thank you!

Picked up THE INNOCENTS from TCM using their Halloween Box Set Apology Discount - came out to $25.49 shipped. It says not in stock even though the street date was Tuesday. I'm not really in the mood for anymore muck-ups from this company so if I'm stuck waiting days to receive this it'll be my last TCM order.

I'm really chuckling at the latest post on Criterion's Instagram. No doubt Polaroid is booking his next holiday after seeing this.

If you haven't seen "My Darling Clementine" you are in for a treat. I also agree with Owl on "3:10 to Yuma".

Barnes & Noble are currently having a buy 2 get the third Criterion for free sale. It seems most of them have the price jacked up to 35.99 so the most you'll be paying for each Criterion will be 23.99 pre tax. There's some priced low like Blue Is The Warmest Color (22.49), so there could be deals with the right combinations.

She just got stuck into a situation where she never should have been. Imagine something like LeBron James given a bat to hit in the 9th inning of the World Series. Yeah, he's unbelievably talented. No, he's not a baseball player. He's gonna look foolish, just like, sad to say, Sofia did.

But Sofia behind the camera (or LeBron on the basketball court) and everything is right with the world.
yikes! a metaphor comparing LeBron's basketball skills to Sofia Coppola directorial skills?! talk about hyperbole!

Aaron, I know you're a Detroit sports fan, so how about saying she is maybe a Rip Hamilton or a Rasheed Wallace at best?

Certainly a hyperbole to the extreme to say she's one of the best directors alive.

yeah.. a matter of preference, to be sure, but I'm pretty sure I can come up with at least 25 names to put above hers

It's really difficult to rank current filmmakers, imo. I do like her films and think she has excellent instincts as a filmmaker. Somewhere is a terrific little gem of a film.

I believe the joke is that you would book a holiday in order to get on a plane to watch those films.

Blue is a cheap release; its msrp is $24.99, currently available from Amazon at $17.23. Bear in mind when you decided if its part of a 'right combination'.

sure, it is difficult, but fun to rank nonetheless and a good conversation starter.
taking some of my subjective personal favs off the list, would anyone object to a list that had the following 10 directors ranked higher?:

Godard, Scorsese, Lynch, Almodóvar, Polanski, The Coen brothers, Malick, Haneke, Spike Lee, Clint Eastwood

its amazing, however, when coming up with such a list, the number of people who are dead!

and the thought crossed my mind recently that many fans here were not even born when people like Truffaut, Hitchcock, Buñuel were around to take a breath.

very happy w/ the DVD copy I bought off eBay a few weeks ago. (Like New - $7.99 !!) I have a feeling that the blu-ray will have a 4 1/2 or 5 star PQ score as this already looked pretty darn good 10 years ago.
I know many aren't sharing my enthusiasm for DVD scores, but I just got a 'like new' copy of L'Eclisse off eBay for $8.00.

I like checking out CriterionForum for their DVD reviews. This release got good marks there as well as a few other places. CC has always put a good foot forward to offer a great presentation and even though we now have a blu-ray, having both L'Avventura and L'Eclisse in my collection for only $15.99 makes me .
