I watched Red River last night for the first time! A classic cattle drive film. I kept thinking of City Slickers which was totally inspired by this film. I wish I had originally seen Red River before City Slickers because then I would have totally recognized the references used in that latter film. But wow, John Wayne plays a seriously unlikeable character in Red River and I must say I have to choose Howard Hawks over John Ford for favorite Western director as of this moment.

Have you seen many John Ford westerns?

I just watched The Man Who Fell to Earth and I was not expecting that. Fabulous, fabulous film.

I'm wondering if the rumors are true about the re-release in February as I am willing to part with my OOP copy for some extra cash. I can always purchase the re-release whenever. However, if it isn't true, there is no way I am parting with this.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is true a magnificent film. The first I watched it via TCM, I was really taken back by how much I enjoyed it and how hard it hit me. The film is on par with The Young Girls of Rochefort as my favorite film by Jacques Demy, although all of the films in the set are quite great, as well.

Not too many. But back in film school I was shown many different clips from several famous Western films. Westerns are not my "thing" but only now am I forcing myself to watch these films. I take it you've seen a lot of Ford films?

I don't know how this one passed me by all these years. Yes, it is perfection on every level. It looks like it will sneak into my top 10. I loved it!

Yes, it is going to be one of those films I will need to watch at least once a year. It is a beautiful film. I loved every frame of it.

Just started Carlos in mini-series form on Netflix - wowza! Very disturbing but totally compelling political thriller. I finished the first episode and am eager to see what comes next. I don't know any of the true history behind this story so I'm coming in completely blind!

I'm going to give this supposed psychological thriller called "Hysteria" on Amazon Prime a chance. It stars Mina Suvari, and I've never heard of it until like 3 minutes ago. Eh. It's only 52 minutes -- and hey! It may even be good.

Anyone have any idea on whether the upgrade of The Night Porter (1974) will have the same cover art or something new? I've never not seen the artwork for a Criterion release so long after the title has been announced! If that sentence makes sense... ... I haven't even seen the film (yet), I'm just curious.

Also, I recently watched Jules and Jim for the first time. I got the dual format release during the B&N sale in July. I watched the film and some of the supplements. I know it's a very beloved film and a good number of people's favorite Truffaut film. It happens to be the first Truffaut film I've seen, which sounds ridiculous if you know me because I'm a huge fan of french film and specifically the french new wave! I'm just not quite sure what to think of it, though! I love the acting and design. But I don't like the story or characters that much; well, at least not as much as I thought I would. After watching a supplement from a documentary about the real people I appreciated it a lot more and saw it as a better film in my mind but I think I need to watch it again to really form my full opinion on it. I want to know what you think of Jules and Jim

Fanny and Alexander was magical. I honestly don't know how they hell they could have cut out 2 hours of the film I watched, because every scene felt absolutely essential. Originally I wasn't sure if I would watch the entire 5 hours in 1 sitting, but after the first two episodes I couldn't stop.

I might chuck in the making-of documentary tonight.

I watched Sundays And Cybele last night and was very impressed. I might even go as far as to say it's the best first-watch I've seen all year. The Criterion transfer is beautiful, and I'm looking forward to digging in to the extras later tonight.

The "disc rot" threads that occasionally pop up in the main forum annoy me in a way, because I often suspect that a few of the posters are just trolling.

I've owned more CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays in my time than I can count, including CDs from the late 1980s that are still in my collection, and I have not experienced this issue even once. I'm not saying that it does not happen, but my own experiences have convinced me that probability is on our side.

Of course, I'm more over-protective of my discs than most (or so I thought, until I joined this forum).

There does appear to be a genuine issue with Summer Hours, but I do not own that Blu-ray, and I cannot comment. I haven't experienced anything wrong with my copies of Walkabout, M, or Stagecoach, though.

I, too, have been lucky in that nothing has gone bad on me over time. However, I have bought new/sealed DVDs and BDs that did not play, and I was able to get them exchanged.

Having said that, I recently got a used copy of We Were Soldiers on DVD, and this disc would restart my BD player every couple of minutes.

In the same thread there is a link with pictures of a Walkabout disc in which you can clearly see browning around the edges. My disc is fine however.
