TCM will be playing Fellini's Juliet of the Spirits, Nights of Cabiria, and La Strada in the next couple of weeks. This is a perfect time to catch up on his catalogue with the Blu-ray release of La Dolce Vita just around the corner.

Furthermore, TCM will also be playing the musical adaptation of Nights of Cabiria by Bob Fosse entitled Sweet Charity.

And I felt really bad, because I convinced a friend to watch it together, seeing all the hype about it..
Of course he didn't like it either.

Despite those, the atmosphere was quite enganging..
I agree about the love scene. I always look for films that I can show in nearly any mixed company without myself or them getting uncomfortable about nudity or real extreme language. I actually loved this film when I saw it on television (the love scene was omitted), and then I rented it some years later, and was embarrassed by not knowing that the (in my opinion) unneeded scene was there. I thought the atmosphere and creepy depiction of Venice were fantastic.

I have somewhat of an idea as to what Roeg was trying convey with that scene, but I kind of understand what you guys are saying. Donald Sutherland's 1970's mug can kind of make you feel like you're watching some bad old school porno. I don't recall how explicit is is or isn't, though.

I liked the film a good deal (saw it not too long ago for the first time) and will probably pick up the CC release. It has a lot of elements you'd come to expect from a horror film, but from early on, you are completely aware that the film was made by an artist. A nice mix. And a film that is definitely good for multiple viewings.

The love scene in Don't Look Now is quite memorable for so many reasons. Roeg's fragmentation technique of showing the lovemaking while also showing Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland getting dressed seems to accentuate the notion that they love each other dearly, but that they are also dealing with difficult and painful memories associated with what happens in an early scene of the film. This scene looks authentic, but I understand the Roeg confirmed years after the fact that the actors were not really having sex during the filming.

I think that it's an incredibly erotic sequence, albeit somewhat awkward these days because of Sutherland's distinctive 1970s look that is mentioned in the above quote. It seems like a true lovemaking scene, as opposed to a mere sex scene.

Yes definitely Don't Look Now, but I would flip for an Academy ratio HD release of EWS

Time Bandits was a huge let down for an announcement, excluding the audio commentary. When's the next B&N CC sale?
Criterion usually makes their announcements on the 15th of each month.

Barnes & Noble will probably have a 50% Criterions off sale in November.

I saw the film when I was very young and the ending kind of freaked me out.

Watched Winter Light today. Wasn't feelin this one as much, as with Wild Strawberries. I suppose the subject matter just didn't interest me as much. There were some great scenes and some fantastic visuals due to wonderful cinematographer Sven Nykvist. I couldn't help but feel bored here and there. The theme of God's silence and faith are much more overt here, given the narrative and setting, than in Through a Glass Darkly, the first film in the thematic trilogy of dramas. I don't know, I wasn't as captivated by the characters and story, though the actors all did a great job as usual, being in other Bergman films. It's still a very fine movie, I'd have to give it another watch when I'm alone and comfortable on my couch than in a classroom. Got a little antsy watching it, even though it's not even an hour and a half

Surprisingly to me, I feel like I was the only one who enjoyed Through a Glass Darkly. I know a couple other classmates didn't think too highly of it, and even my professor admitted he didn't like it.

This is about how I would rank them so far:

Through a Glass Darkly
The Seventh Seal
Summer with Monika
Winter Light
Wild Strawberries

The 400 Blows isn't Bergman but it's in the class schedule, I'd put that at the top probably.

The 2006 James Bond movie, Casino Royale, has a wonderful homage to Roeg's Don't Look Now during one of the final scenes, where Bond is pursuing Vesper, in her bright red dress, through the alleys of Venice.

It was the shock and element of surprise. Your mind is going one way with the plot and then BAMM! The whole perception of the story and what was happening changes. It was a great WTF!

I've only seen 3 Roeg films and I would rank them from high to low like this: Walkabout, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Insignificance. How does Don't Look Now compare?

Don't Look Now is one of my all-time favorite films, and while I haven't seen the second two films that you listed, It is so much better than Walkabout.
