I love Tati's work but have only seen Playtime once and like you I appreciated the art but found it a little unengaging. I absolutely love Trafic however but that may be because I am a bit of a petrol head (with a particular weakness for European cars of the 60s and 70s).

M. Hulot
is probably my favourite though.

I also loved The Illusionist, Sylvain Chomet's Tati film that never was. Anyone else here seen it?

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to try to track down another one of his films before definitively purchasing the set.

Someone tell me if I have this right.

Between Shout Factory's Westchester deal and Criterion's possible new contract with Studio Canal,

Criterion could be losing:
Stagecoach
Foreign Correspondent

And possibly be getting back:
The Third Man
Pierrot Le Fou
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Grand Illusion
The Tales of Hoffman
Ran
Contempt

Right? What other titles are affected?

The original Godzilla is one of the ones Westchester has, right?

The Westchester deal covers broadcasting rights (meaning distribution platforms). In other words, while it is an 'acquisition' for Shout Factory, it does not affect physical media licenses on existing Criterion titles.

Westchester Films, which has broadcasting rights to a number of classic films, will operate as a subsidiary of Shout Factory.
As far as your second question is concerned, Criterion has an ongoing relationship with StudioCanal. The upcoming box set of Tati films is part of it.

I hope this clarifies things.

Have a great weekend, CinemaBlu

I know it's not Criterion, but what Westchester Films titles are on BLU and have editions worth picking up (in the even they might go OOP)?

I looked at the review and caps for 'Hell's Angels on Wheels' and the transfer looks soft and unspectacular. However, 'The Stunt Man' (Severin) and 'The Romantic Englishwoman' (Kino) releases look pretty good and are packed with extras. The 'Breaker Morant' (Image) release has a review but it's an old one with captures that aren't even Full HD and being from 2008, thoughts on the transfer quality in the review may be based on expectations from 6 years ago.

But once Criterion's license is up, Shout factory will have the option not to renew it, won't they?

Thanks.

Does any other feel that way?

I already want 4 films from Shout Factory's January titles and 5 titles from TT's Novermber-December titles.
The last Criterion i really wanted was The Big Chill.
I've always been this way. As much as I can appreciate Criterion's output and focus, majority of their releases are way too out there or "artsy" for my tastes. I own less than 10 of their movies and only have interest in one or two upcoming releases.

I am unsure I understand the question.

When rights are negotiated, they typically come with different limitations. Additionally, I think you are under the impression that 'one license covers everything'. In many cases, one party controls home video rights (this would include DVD, Blu-ray. etc), and another theatrical rights/broadcasting rights.

For example: In the United Kingdom, Park Circus handles many films from Warner, Paramount, and Sony for the theatrical market. But these films are released on the home video market by the studios, or third parties (such as Odeon).

Another example: If in the United States TNT controls the broadcasting rights for Lord of the Rings and you see it on TV with their logo, this does not mean that they also have a license to release the film on DVD/Blu-ray.

Theatrical rights, home video rights and broadcasting rights are all different segments of the business/market

What I mean is that eventually Criterion's licenses will expire and the rights will revert back to their owners, in this case Shout Factory. Shout Factory can decide whether or not they want to renew the licenses. It's similar to what happened a few years ago with StudioCanal.
::EDIT::
I understand my mistake now. For some reason I thought Shout Factory BOUGHT Westchester.

Pro-B, do you think that with the Tati box set's announcement, there is a good chance that Criterion has renewed their partnership with StudioCanal?

I really hope that they become the main distributors of the catalogue again instead of Lionsgate.

Shout Factory are not the party that owns the films you initially addressed. Therefore, the 'rights' cannot revert back to them.

As I attempted to explain above, Shout Factory have entered a new licensing agreement, but this agreement covers a different form of distribution activity.

Simply put, Criterion and Shout Factory have different licensing agreements.

I hope this helps.

Yeah I edited my last post. I thought Shout Factory bought Westchester. I didn't realize they only had a licensing agreement. Thanks for the help.

iScottie, I don't believe their partnership has ever been interrupted. StudioCanal simply work with different parties on this side of the Atlantic. Of course, Lionsgate has a very close relationship with them, which covers areas outside of the home video market.

Regardless, the best and most accurate answers for these types of questions can come only from Criterion

No problem, CinemaBlu. Have a great weekend everyone and keep an eye on this thread. A number of Criterion reviews will be coming up in the next couple of days.

It looks like they have reacquired the rights to The Man Who Fell to Earth and Grand Illusion. And judging by their ability to replace damaged Pierrot Le Fou discs, they may be creating new discs and putting that back in print as well.

They did.

Shout! Factory has acquired Westchester Films, a distribution company with rights to such classics as Alfred Hitchcock’s Foreign Correspondent, John Ford’s Stagecoach and Merchant Ivory’s A Room With a View.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

New York-based Westchester, founded in 2006 by producers Mark Balsam and Julian Schlossberg, will operate as a subsidiary of Shout! Its strength lies in rights for platforms including digital broadband, pay TV, VOD, satellite and broadcast networks.
Westchester Films holds the Home Video rights for several of Criterion's releases. Once these distribution licenses expire, it's possible that they could go elsewhere. I don't think they will, as I expect the broadcast rights/digital are the only revenue stream that Shout! and Westchester are going to develop.

The rights the Hollywood Reporter piece is referring to are indeed rights for platforms, as the quoted text above makes quite clear.
