Shockingly, I've always enjoyed Kurosawa's non-samurai films over the samurai ones (except for Ran).

High & Low is a masterpiece, IMO. Same for Ikiru.

Kurosawa's quality of output is staggering. I think it's hard to argue to say any one person is the greatest director who lived. However, if you argued for Kurosawa I'd surely listen.

EDIT 2: Last Year at Marienbad has a 10K? code. I cannot read the last number, but it's probably a 6. No sign of trouble, though.

I'd be irate if anything happened with Last Year at Marienbad and Pierrot Le Fou. So far, so good, though.
I'd be irate if I didn't have those two.

Oh, wait ...

That's how I look at it, frankly. "Who's the greatest director?" Who the hell knows?

But for me, there's a group from which any choice makes sense.

What's funny is, the Japanese think he's too Westernized.

Kurosawa's definitely the most consistent director. The run from Throne of Blood through to High and Low is amazing.

Well, I finally brought myself to double dip on Three Colors. I just HAD to have it. So, in a few days, I will be able to check out what it all looks like on BD, and check out the extras.

It's really a fantastic release, and the extras are great too, i really hope Criterion releases The Decalogue one day, even if i haven't seen any of those films after watching this 3 and Double Life of Veronique, i am ready to blind buy

Note: make sure you check the pressing of your White disc, there was some problem with the audio on the original pressing.

Pressured by the latest Criterion news, i unwrapped my out of print blu-ray of Pierrot le Fou the other day to inspect the disc and tonight I watched the entire movie without any problems on my Sony blu ray player. I can't believe it took me this long to see this movie. True, I'm not really inspired by Godard much and not into his glorifications of violence and rampant sociopathic characters, but I actually liked this movie! I liked it a lot more than Week-end actually. And most importantly, I liked that my Sonopress disc wasn't bronzed and functioned perfectly!

Well he definitely had a lot of non-Japanese inspiration (John Ford was a big influence) and may of his films favor the rebellious or individualistic streak, which is not regarded as the traditional Japanese stance. The films of Ozu, Mizoguchi, Naruse etc are regarded as more true to the "Japanese spirit".

By the way, someone out there needs to create a catchy t-shirt that reads "Got Bronzed?"

And below that there would be a picture of a bronze medal but instead of a medal it will be a picture of a bronzed blu-ray disc with the word "Criterion" inside it!

True, but that's probably the crux of what makes his work so universal, not to mention accessible to the West.

1962 Sanjuro
1961 Yojimbo
1960 The Bad Sleep Well
1958 The Hidden Fortress
1957 The Lower Depths
1957 Throne of Blood

Oh! Decalogue! Yikes.

But yeah, it's insane that I was holding back on this. I've had this whole, "I'm trying not to double dip, let's get new stuff" thing for years. But Hell, this is too good, some of the greatest films ever made IMO. So, what was I thinking?!

And I will look out for "White" -- thanks for the heads up.

Ever since I saw Seven Samurai, I felt like it might as well be a movie directed by John Ford had he learned to speak Japanese. It contains very little of Japanese samurai aesthetic. The score is way too westernized as well. Compare it to Harakiri and Seven Samurai feels like such a watered down samurai movie.

Eraserhead is still on backorder. I'm sure lots of folks want to get this during the flash sale. Maybe it will commence once the corrected version becomes available?
