Well, I saved myself a trip to the mail by not buying mediocre films.

As far as I'm concerned, Fanny and Alexander is Bergman's finest accomplishment, and one of the great films of all-time. Even if you've been big on Bergman's other works, I can't imagine anyone not falling in love with Fanny and Alexander.

I would also recommend Red River, especially if you're a fan of westerns in general. John Wayne, who I've never been entirely taken with, gives an excellent, somewhat unexpected performance, and the package Criterion's assembled is just phenomenal.

Seconding Fanny and Alexander. It's just wonderful.

Aww snap, the discount doesn't work on backorders. I guess I really DO have to wait for the barnes and noble sale for the innocents, unless amazon has a sale on it or something.

I'm getting Eraserhead, though, since through their site I'm guaranteed second pressing :P Also going to get Carnival of Souls, since I watched it on Hulu I can't stop thinking about it. What an awesome little movie! I can't really see them announcing it on bluray in the immediate future so this should be a safe buy.

Yep, I'm hoping it goes back up soon so I can order eraserhead before I go to bed since I could see it selling out. It started crashing on me every time I hit checkout for a while, and now it's just down.

It wouldn't let me check out either. BUT when I tried a final time, it said that my gift card had been used on a previous order. Then I checked "my account" and it said that my transaction was "pending." Strange. No email confirmation yet. Double check your account to make sure you don't get charged more than once.

also, it's back up

This link will enlighten you about the issue of the first pressing.

I truly believe that it is a director's responsibility to have his supervised blu ray correct the first time.

I do find it hilarious that his "supervised" approval of the blu ray had a big enough mistake that his cult followers were upset.
David Lynch's mind must have been transmogrifying between two parallel universes (such as found in Inland Empire) whilst supervising the blu-ray. He's no spring chicken anymore. But the bottom line for him is, hell, "that's a damn fine cup of coffee"!

I will trust the taste of anyone with a Daniel Plainview avatar. Ordered them both. Thanks for the input.

Of course, I couldn't stop at just two. I added A Man Escaped, Love Streams, and Down by Law

You really cannot go wrong with Fanny and Alexander. Prepare for almost six hours to feel like one hour.

Made a killing.

Eraserhead
The Big Chill
Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!
Love Streams
All That Jazz
Macbeth
The Innocents
Sundays and Cybele
Y Tu Mama También

Had a 50 buck loyalty gift certificate, and had it sent to someone I know in NJ to avoid sales tax. And of course no shipping.

130 buck. I'll take that deal.

Placed an order for The Complete Jean Vigo, To Be Or Not To Be and Beauty & The Beast. Looks like I'm going to have to wait for B&N for the Tati set...

Was able to get ordered during the first hour of the flash sale:

MACBETH
PICKPOCKET
ALL THAT JAZZ
ALI: FEAR EATS THE SOUL
SUNDAYS AND CYBELE
LOVE STREAMS
SCANNERS
and THE BIG CHILL

all Blu-ray, of course, and half of them blind-buys.

Tempted to try back in the morning for some Eclipse sets, but keep hoping they'll upgrade most of them to Blu-ray someday.

Surely it is inevitable? The next Eclipse set out, the Kinoshita one, is literally all available in HD on Hulu (aside from the one that is not available on Hulu altogether for some strange reason). I just don't get it.

I also have some problem with the notion that for some reason Victim and The League of Gentlemen were good enough to get released with a number back on laserdisc but were resorted to second-tier status when it came to releasing it on DVD. The Basil Dearden set, to me, is leagues above everything else in the Eclipse range because I simply feel all four titles belong in the collection proper and the Eclipse branding has done more to discredit these films as less important than to spread further awareness of them.

I too am not sure about the Eclipse sets, the ones i am interested are Late Ozu and Late Ray, but from the reviews it doesn't seem like those Ozu films are minor works, so would love to see them in blu ray someday.

As for the Ray, i really loved The Stranger and i think it deserves a blu ray release.

But unfortunately i don't think any film released via eclipse has been upgraded by Criterion, so the only hope would be from other countries.

My final haul spread across two orders:
  1. Love Streams
  2. Eraserhead
  3. The Innocents
  4. Sundays with Cybele
  5. Y tu mama tambien
  6. Tie me up! Tie me down!
  7. Ali: Fear eats the soul
  8. Pickpocket
  9. Overlord
  10. Riot in cell block 11

Earned a $50 gift certificate which I applied to one of my orders. Taken together, each title averaged out to $14.97 each.

This gets me a little more caught up on newer releases until next month for the B&N sale. Right off the top of my head I want: The Big Chill, Macbeth, Scanners, Vengeance is Mine and pretty much all the new releases between now and then.
