oh, yeah.. and there is an unintentionally funny scene during which Benicio del Toro is wading in a pool and he says w/ a heavy accent, "do you like beisbol?"

I'm not at home but I'm 100% certain. I'm from Cleveland so that's one detail that I would not forget.

hmm... that seems logical. I'm feeling pretty certain though, too. I'll check this weekend and report back to eat crow, if necessary.

Yes, because nothing says happy quite like Lars von Trier.

So I watched Il Sorpasso on hulu this morning. Loved it, and easily one of the funniest films I've watched in all of the Criterion collection. Vittorio Gassman (the movie had me chuckling from the get go when his name appeared in the opening credits ) walks a pretty fine line of making Bruno an obnoxious, self-destructive jerk, but still so charming and irresistible it's easy to see how the bookish, shy Roberto (Jean-Louis Trintignant) goes along for the ride.
[Show spoiler]That ending tho Should have seen it coming, but still jarring.

I'll add another Kurosawa film to your list:

One Wonderful Sunday (from the Postwar Kurosawa Eclipse set) - a short scene where the main character decides to join some kids for a game of baseball. It was instantly memorable to me because Kurosawa used the music from Bizet's Carmen for the scene...which is exactly the same music that director Michael Ritchie uses in his 1976 film - The Bad News Bears - one of my all-time favorite baseball movies!

My haul this flash sale:

Three Colors box set. I watched all 3 films for the 1st time earlier this year.

The rest are all blind buys:

The Innocents
Sundays and Cybele
Everlasting Moments

I find happy films annoying when I'm down - they piss me, why can they be happy and funny! lol

Lars Von Trier films really drain you and suck all your energy out, and easier to connect with when down - hard to explain haha, its like good on you 'She' you hurt him! take it all out haha

how is the postwar Kurosawa set? how about the late Ozu set?

I've seen Kurosawa (obviously,) but I've only seen Tokyo Story once... it really didn't resonate much w/ me. nevertheless, I feel that late Ozu set is calling me. intrigued by multiple titles in a nifty little affordable box.

I'm going to be sending in my copy of Kagemusha. No bronzing, but I get a crapload of errors on a surface scan with VSO Inspector, and it freezes up at around 1:21 when tried on my laptop drive. And it has the problematic IFPI codes (10K7 and L021). My copy of Stagecoach, like four other titles on their list, is fine. Well, except for the fact that its internal volume label reads "BIGGER_THAN_LIFE" rather than "STAGECOACH".

I will, however, be emailing Mulvaney prior to sending it in, and will attach a copy of the VSO Inspector log so he can see the nature of the problem. I've been putting off getting a replacement on my White disc, so I'll be sending that one in, too.

I like playing sad songs on the guitar when I'm feeling down. I think it's part of the "misery loves company" syndrome.

I've only seen a handful of Ozu's but Tokyo Story I thought was a terrific film...and you will probably find more of the same style in his other films though. What I liked about Tokyo Story was that you don't have to be strictly familiar with Japanese customs to relate to the family drama in the film...I think one can relate to it no matter what part of the the world you are from. I like the way Ozu shows the universality of his themes when he intersperses scenes of nature (or the outdoors) to signify the passing of time - how the drama unfolding in the film is all just a part of the natural scheme of things. Just wonderful.

I've seen and enjoyed all the films in the Postwar Kurosawa set but have been holding off a purchase in hopes of an upcoming blu-ray upgrade. One Wonderful Sunday would be my favorite of the group...followed by I Live in Fear - where I didn't even recognize Toshiro Mifune at first when I first saw it
