I just cranked up Quadrophenia and watched it for the second time tonight in 2 years or so. I invited 3 friends of mine over and I played the movie with the new 5.1 channel mix which just blew everyone away. We all were pretty impressed with this amazing release, but this film is a powder keg full of dynamite in terms of memorable sequences and powerhouse acting. It made us feel young (like 19 year olds) and want to go out and make a ruckus, break some windows and start a riot (or revolution). Of course my friends are all in their 40s (I'm the baby at 36) and so we could only imagine just how fun times must have been back in 1964 and how kids such as the Mods and Rockers were going out and doing crazy things. Nowadays every young person seems to be playing video games and are pretty much obese zombies in the vein of Wall-E.

Otherwise, I think you might be confusing another director? Possibly Orson Welles' A Touch of Evil?

Hitch loved his unbroken shots, but I can't think of a film that opens with one (I could be forgetting one though?)

I am curious though, if you haven't heard of Rear Window, which Hitchcock's have you seen? Maybe you just haven't seen his best work?

I second the person a couple pages ago who suggested A Shadow of a Doubt and Strangers on a Train being two of his best.

Hitch is probably my favourite director too, and there's so many classics in his filmography that I hope you can 'crack him open.'
Ah yes I got mixed up haha! but have heard about Rope, although I didn't know what it was called - I loose film that are made to look to be one take or very long takes, I mean look at Russian Ark.

I haven't seen most the films you guys mention on her tbh just the more well known ones so maybe I need to visit the stuff you guys have mentioned.

Would be nice but would love Morvern Callar in collection - incredible film, so poetic, dark and beautiful. Samantha Morton is incredible.

They NEED to get Swimmer, her short film include din collection someway - its incredible.

Don't be discouraged then! I find some of his biggest films work the least for me. I find The Birds to be one of my least favourites of his. Vertigo had to grow on me. The Man Who Knew Too Much kind of loses me towards the end.

North by Northwest holds up though. It's a really fun film. (IMO)

Ok cool thanks - I find Physcho fascinating, only because of the controversy with Saul Bass lol but I found it a tad predictable/meh and didn't care for the characters at all >.<

Why did Gus Van Sant need to remake it lol :/

I saw The Who in concert during their 1997 Quadrophenia Tour. That was quite an experience!

But...but... it is literally the only oppurtunity you can specifically ask if a release is coming and they give you a straight answer!

If you don't already have the studio album, on Blu ray 5.1, I HIGHLY recommend it :

http://www.amazon.com/Quadrophenia-S...phenia+blu+ray

I felt exactly the same when I watched it for the first time ever through the Criterion BD with the new 5.1 mix (they advised to play it loud, I listened to them ).

While the movie didn't make a lasting effect on me, it was really energizing.

I'll gladly take donations if people have certain titles they want to know about.

(And I just looked and it's actually $6)

@ Mr. Polaroid - it may be that Hitchcock just won't work for you and that's fine. keep this in mind, though... while the 4 films that are in the Criterion Collection are more than worthwhile, (I don't think many would argue that 2 of the 4 would be in just about everyone's top 15) they are not representative of his best work. most of those films are with Universal.

I wouldn't know which film to recommend to you. Maybe Frenzy - it was, I think, his only British film after leaving to work in Hollywood in the early 1940's. The film has good suspense, is kind of dark, and has a devilish sense of humor.

Dagnabbit! Someone should like, tape it, or something.

I normally watch it, but they are showing Red Beard tomorrow night as part of a film seminar series and I'll be there instead.

had a chance to see The Friends of Eddie Coyle last night... in short, I preferred it to both Thief and Le Cercle Rouge. very good movie!

Buster Keaton's early short films are mesmerizing, because they're like the Merry Melodies/Looney Tunes cartoons, except live action.

The full-length films are more nuanced, to great effect.

I finished a trail marathon today in rainy weather that made the rocks and trails slippery, so I'm going to sit down to watch Steamboat Bill, Jr. tonight with a big plate of ribs and with my dead legs elevated up on the coffee table. I might even start watching some of the Lost Keaton shorts (I'm hoping to finish those tomorrow or Tuesday.).

So far, without having seen Steamboat Bill, Jr. yet, my favorite full-length Keaton films are...

Sherlock Jr.
Seven Chances
The General
I never seem to find the time to watch all Keaton films but judging from what I saw he was truly a genius and way ahead of his time.
That "rolling boulders" scene in Seven Chances was absolutely side-splitting. I think I liked that film more than Sherlock Jr.

Probably better off on eBay. People around here seem pretty convinced a re-release is imminent which would likely effect the amount they would pay.
