I'm happy to have Sturges on Blu ray at last! Very diverse group of films for January. I do not think any of them were ever discussed as coming. Nice list!

All are of interest except Sword of Doom. Probably will only buy Palm Beach Story, which is fantastic.

Hmm...not sure how I feel about these releases. I haven't read too much about any of them, to be honest, and I have never even heard of the Argentinian film.

The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant and The Sword of Doom are available on Hulu and My Winnipeg is on Amazon Instant Video, for those like me who will watch them ahead of time.

Default Wow! Great month!

Sword of Doom is the only one that I am unfamiliar with, but I am familiar with the rest and will be purchasing all next July!

Something to look forward to!

Sword of Doom and Bitter Tears sound like solid blind buys. Winnipeg is a maybe.

How does it compare to Ali: Fear Eats The Soul, which I thought was a pretty solid film, but nowhere close to its inspiration.

It's the other most popular film of his early 70s, 'Sirk' inspired period if that tells you anything. But as a huge Fassbinder fan, I'm more in love with his smaller films like The Third Generation. I have all of the dvds released of his films, so any month I can upgrade one, it's a great month to me. Surprised alot of people here hasn't heard of this film though. It's a staple of 70s arthouse.

Ugh, I cannot believe Bitter Tears is finally getting a release. I screamed for joy the moment I saw it. Even that cover, my god. Even if I don't care for the rest of the releases, January will be a good month based on this one film alone. Psyched.

Same here, but I'm thankful for Criterion for further opening my view into worldwide cinema. Now on to wikipedia..

Hoping the rest of the Wellspring titles get the same blu-ray love. That cover art is one of my favorites. Hard to beat Close-up though.

I'm not that familiar with any of these so I guess I'll have to check them out first. Nothing too exciting because of that but will look into seeing them at some point to later add to the collection (as with many Criterion releases). Sword of Doom should be good with Mifune though.

Damnit Criterion, I plan to buy 13 releases off my wishlist in November (here's hoping the sale does come, and it covers IHON), and you have to go and make me add 3 more to replace them.

Fassbinder and Okamoto are definites (eventually) with the Sturges as a lower tier want. The Martel requires viewing before I decide.

As for Ali: Fear Eats the Soul vs. All That Heaven Allows, Ali had more of an impact for me, as it's a subject that's still a major issue today. Yes, yes, there's issues with class and such, but the whole foreign worker interracial relationship seems to be more at the forefront. Sirk's certainly no slouch, and the suppplements were fantastic, but Fassbinder doesn't seem as dated.

Yes, I'm alive kids. It's been what, over a year since I posted here?
