La ciénaga / Lucrecia Martel is the only one of the January films or directors I'm not familiar with. But it looks interesting.
One of the best announcements really. Amazed, if not appalled, at some comments I read in this thread. Serious.

ps. that Leisen is a must too, I hope to find a place that ships internationally.

Sword of Doom has been one of my most wanted upgrades, have loved the DVD. Should be amazing in HD.

Sword of Doom, yes. More Tatsuya Nakadai please. Would love if they get Hideo Goshas "GOYOKIN". My absolute favorite Samurai Flick.

Probably using the packaging from first batch to save on costs etc - be cheaper to just have new discs printed and use old packaging until they run out.

Could someone please tell me what's wrong with Carlos? I got a second hand copy today but there's no "second printing" on the label. Not sure if there should be.

I thought they were referring to Eraserhead?

I believe it was an audio issue on one of the discs, but it's been awhile.

Carlos also apparently had faulty disc(s) for it's first pressing.

Chapter 3 on disc 2 has an issue with very low volume to the left surround channel. I don't know if I should admit this but I've watched it twice and didn't notice either time

In any event, you can just send Criterion your disc and they'll send you a replacement. You don't need a proof of purchase or invoice or anything.

Wow, La Cienaga is in the Criterion Collection? That was a nice little surprise, to be sure.
I saw it a few years ago, and I think it's a great film in its own right - just not a pleasant viewing experience, by a long shot. Certainly not blind-buy material.
Bleak, pessimistic, decadent, disjointed, almost documentary in style (plentiful use of handheld camera), it portrays the life of a dysfunctional Argentinian family plunged in a quagmire (yeah, that's what the title means) of tedium and decay. It's like watching real life unfolding in front of you, warts and all, and a damn unsightly life it was, too. I remember the film was pretty tense to watch because, although there weren't many interesting events occurring most of the time (that doesn't mean it wasn't interesting to watch, though), my gut was telling me all along that something terrible was coming. Well, my gut wasn't lying...
Of course, there were a few absolutely great scenes that I thought worked well because of the understated manner in which they were done. A lot of stuff in the film is left between the lines and expressed non-verbally. Add to that the unconventional narrative coupled with the overall dreary vibe, well you get the picture... I'm sure there was some humor in there as well that I probably failed to notice - but that's not surprising since the film warrants multiple viewings to fully grasp what's going on.
All in all, a great film that's not easy to watch but certainly worth checking out.

Carlos Disc 2. The outer ring (art side) has small writing. At the very end of the writing there will be a bold "Second Printing". If your disc says Second Printing, then you are fine. Disc One has no error so there is no Second Printing
The Error with the audio is the stereo encoding on the left side, apparently it isn't present. I don't have surround sound to confirm, but I sent mine in with my Eraserhead disc

I emailed CC and they said to send it in with my others, just send them the email confirming why.

Thinking of blind-buying The Sword of Doom, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant and My Winnipeg. All of them seem like the type of film I'd want to check out.

No word yet. Seems like the longer titles have come out in summer/fall for some reason. Berlin Alexanderplatz, Shoah, and Human Condition were all mid/late year released

The art on the Criterion Blu-rays are just amazing. They're very simple, yet tell you everything you need to know about the movie.

Sword of Doom is a welcome upgrade and safe blind buy for those wondering. Mifune has a role in the film but it's clearly Nakadai's film.

The experience of seeing Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo on a big theater screen was really something else, and it really cemented my opinion that this is one of the all-time greatest color films.

Last night's viewing also reinforced the notion of Vertigo as a true film noir, because the nature of the twisted relationship between Scottie and Judy during the final half hour comes across even more effectively when viewed on a big screen. The final scene is so gloriously intense.

I've already reserved a seat for the showing of Rear Window next Wednesday night.

So happy The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant getting a criterion release. It's one of my favourite films.

Not a big fan of the cover art though.

Yes, and then that abrupt ending where the viewer is almost like Scottie himself standing at the edge of a cliff, clueless and gasping for breath.
