Agree 100%. City Lights is my favorite, and having seen all the others you mention before it, I have to say it was City Lights - and Modern Times - that finally made me realize how much I like Chaplin (just not as much as Keaton and Lloyd). I am a huge Keaton and Lloyd fan.

If that is true, it must go past Thanksgiving; otherwise, it will be only a two week sale. Usually the sale lasts for at least three weeks and ends the Monday before Thanksgiving.

That should make Les Blank and L'avventura fans happy.

Yeah, I asked my buddy when it ends but he hasn't responded to my text yet. I'll get back presently.

EDIT: I'll clarify. I used to work at BN and left a few months ago. My girlfriend and a few friends still work there so they tell me about the sales when they get the info.

The movie rests on Marion Cotillard's shoulders, and her screen presence is as vital, and magnetic as ever. Moving, authentic, great performance. The film, itself, as well.

I would love to see this released by Criterion. They do have a strong relationship with the Dardennes, so I hope it's possible. BTW, it starts releasing in theaters here in the US in December.

Also this was the first time I've attended any film fest screening, and will definitely have to do more next year. Fun atmosphere, and simply great to see a foreign film with a packed audience instead of the usual five or ten others scattered about in a theater.
Two Days, One Night will be playing at the Hawaii International Film Festival in November. At this time, I do not have any plans to see that one due to screening time.

I do attend HIFF regularly, but the festival leans very heavily toward Asian films. (I have constantly submitted comments requesting more European films.) I love Asian cinema, but think it should be more rounded if they want to use the term "international".

So far, I plan to see:

"Kumiko the Treasure Hunter", which is based on the "urban legend" about the Japanese woman who went looking for the "Fargo" treasure.

"La chambre bleue (the Blue Room)" starring and directed by Mathieu Amalric

"Human Capital" (Italy)

I would LOVE to see "In Order of Disappearance (KRAFTIDIOTEN) " starring Stellan Skarsgĺrd (Criterion connection!) from the same director of his "A Somewhat Gentle Man", which I saw several years ago at HIFF. Showtimes are not good for me, but we'll see.

Sorry for the aside, but I don't really have anyone to talk to about the festival.

The restored version by the French is best.

Thanks for the update. I'll hold off on The Vanishing, and will get It Happened One Night, L'Avventura, and the Monte Hellman films during that sale.

I presume that the Tati set is a Day 1 buy for you?

By the way, if you have not seen the two Monte Hellman westerns before, you are going to be in for a treat!

Can't say that I'm interested in the Jan. stuff. Maybe that Argentinian film. I will have to look into it. But otherwise, neh.

Well, in the last couple of days, I have received:

The Innocents

Breathless

Band of Outsiders

Weekend

Repulsion

I couldn't watch those all -- with the massive extras some of them have -- in a weekend, let alone all at once.

re: Mr. Arkadin ...

The reconstructed version is very well done, the editing is excellent. It's interesting that there are some shots in it that are not in either of the other two versions. Some of the footage is in noticeably rough shape but that's to be expected considering the film's history. The only thing I didn't like about it was
[Show spoiler] Welles as Arkadin tells the familiar "scorpion and the frog" story, but later on tells another, similar parable ... it doesn't add anything new, just rehashes the first story. I think they should have left the second story out.

Be sure to check out the footage of Welles directing the other actors, it is fascinating and priceless. Watch it and you'll find out
[Show spoiler]why the movie was completely post-dubbed, the rattling of the camera almost drowns out all the live dialogue.

Isn't the 11th a stat holiday of some sorts in America? I know it's a stat here, because it's Remembrance Day.

[Show spoiler]"I will come to a time in my backwards trip when November eleventh, accidentally my birthday, was a sacred day called Armistice Day. When I was a boy, and when Dwayne Hoover was a boy, all the people of all the nations which had fought in the First World War were silent during the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of Armistice Day, which was the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
It was during that minute in nineteen hundred and eighteen, that millions upon millions of human beings stopped butchering one another. I have talked to old men who were on battlefields during that minute. They have told me in one way or another that the sudden silence was the Voice of God. So we still have among us some men who can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind.
Armistice Day has become Veterans' Day. Armistice Day was sacred. Veterans' Day is not.
So I will throw Veterans' Day over my shoulder. Armistice Day I will keep. I don't want to throw away any sacred things." - Kurt Vonnegut
