On DVD, there's Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc (but there's a BD from MoC, as you know), Christiansen's Häxan, Flaherty's Nanook of the North, DeMille's The King of Kings, and G.W. Pabst's Pandora's Box.

I'm probably missing some titles, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

I thought it was one if the worst films I've seen in years. Just my opinion.

Didn't care for it either, I thought it was pretty hollow. I was actually quite surprised because I was sure it would be right up my alley. The beach scene was really great though.

Oh and really want Nosferatu and more of those ones

They also have a few horrors I want theatre only on DVD in collection - so be good to get those
I too would recommend Joan of Arc, that release has 2 different scores than Criterion, also if you like Murnau, i would say at least Sunrise and City Girl are must have.

Under the Skin is my favorite movie of 2014 so far. It's a pretty divisive film, though.

There are so many must have MOC silents in my opinion:

Faust
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Dr. Mabuse The Gambler
Nosferatu
Joan of Arc
Metropolis
Die Nibelungen
Spione
Sunrise
City Girl
The Thief of Baghdad
Tabu
Birth of a Nation
Intolerance

I love MOC!

For sure. Opinions are definitely very positive or very negative; doesn't seen to be much middle ground. I do think those that like it do a pretty good job of stating why, however.

Go on the previous page and look for ShellOilJunior's post, as there's a link in his signature to a thread that already has 7-8pp worth of discussion on the sale.

Change of subject, , I did actually end up watching Salo even though I swore in the past that I never would willingly do so. Unlike Caligula, it's not just smut, gore, and shit eatting for the sake of smut, gore, and shit eatting. It seemed rather "tame," for lack of a better word. I don't think I'm going to rush out to buy the film, but I don't regret watching it, unlike Caligula.

I watched it for the first time over the summer and although I find it to be quite despicable in terms of what the subjects are faced with, I think the film does its job at depicting the warped ideologies that certain individuals maintain. I would not want to see it again, though.

Has anyone had loading/playback problems with the Slacker release?

I've had it for a while but only today decided to open and watch it. I load it in, and it loads to a black screen with the criterion "C" in the top left corner of the screen - and that's it.

I've tried turning it on and off with the disc inserted. Hitting the menu and popup menu buttons, to no avail. It simply loads to that screen, and that's it. It's been sitting there for about 30 minutes now.

Should add my player is a Soniq B100 - and the region coding is set for US discs (1).

Oh god, I sure hope there isn't a massive conspiracy happening here where all these blu-ray discs are rotting out now... maybe its all those chemtrails in the air the government is spraying...its causing our blu-rays to rot!

I'm afraid to check my edition of Slacker now...but probably will .

We know that Criterion is doing Mulholland Drive.
A dream release for me would be a Criterion Lynch set with Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, and Inland Empire. The dream-logic set. Would also explain why Empire and Highway aren't out on blu ray yet. I would also love to see The Elephant Man and Straight Story from Criterion. Definitely need more Lynch on blu ray, and Criterion doing these would be fantastic.
I'm currently watching the Twin Peaks blu ray set that I recently purchased, and it is one of my all time favorite blu ray releases. Incredible stuff.

Would love that - there are DVD sets that are really poor matched, like Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr and Elephant man etc or the complete david lynch sets are missing films lol

Really annoying

Agreed, I thought it worked to modernise it and move it to fascist Italy. The film was disturbing and nasty, yet, in comparison to Caligula, The Human Centipede, or, from what I've read, Wetlands, the graphic nature of the film isn't as bad or done intentionally just to be gross and disturbing. There's a valid reason. That's what I mean by tame, as I was expecting a lot worse than what actually happened in the film. I have issues watching these things, but have no problems reading them 9 times out of 10. Seeing the stuff on the screen just makes it more realistic than simply reading about them.

I was at a party last night, and we started talking about film, and we went from b-movies like Lesbian Vampire Killers, to Eating Raoul and John Waters, onto Caligula, Salo, and Antichrist, and then we ended up playing Cards Against Humanity. It was an interesting discussion, because the common theme linking the films together seemed to be the concept of shock factor, and the merit of placing disturbing ideas/images into a film.

A Serbian Film

I'm very liberal in my movie watching as it is(The Image, uncut Caligula, 9 Songs etc)

That one is a "once and I'm good"...

A Serbian film is OK - ha a cool soundtrack but for me it tries to hard to shock and be disturbing - and don't get me started on The Human Centipede, one of the most awful film every created, poor acting throughout, weak storyline, bad visual effects and again, made just to try shock, be disturbing and cause a reaction - A Serbian Film I have more respect for as it is trying to send a message and has some depth to it.

THC is there just to try shock, nothing more and for me, it was terribly executed and could have actually been rather interesting.

I did thoroughly enjoy Caligula! - be nice to get bluray of this, not sure if there is one but would be nice to see it - am I right in saying Helen Mirren wasn't aware of half the sex scenes in it?

Im a HUGE fan of transgressive cinema, there are so really great ones out there - Kakashi Miike is one of the great transgressive directors, look at Visitor Q ! So so so dark and disturbing yet it is hilarious!

Also - John Walters films, wow lol - recently saw PinK Flamingos, what an experience!
