I would also love to see The Elephant Man and Straight Story from Criterion. Definitely need more Lynch on blu ray, and Criterion doing these would be fantastic.
I'm currently watching the Twin Peaks blu ray set that I recently purchased, and it is one of my all time favorite blu ray releases. Incredible stuff.
Inland Empire and Lost Highway have Region Free blus available.

I've had it for a while but only today decided to open and watch it. I load it in, and it loads to a black screen with the criterion "C" in the top left corner of the screen - and that's it.

I've tried turning it on and off with the disc inserted. Hitting the menu and popup menu buttons, to no avail. It simply loads to that screen, and that's it. It's been sitting there for about 30 minutes now.

Should add my player is a Soniq B100 - and the region coding is set for US discs (1).
I believe it's just a problem with out players. Not the slacker disc so everyone can relax. I also have the Soniq B100 player and while it's been fine with every other Criterion disc (well, it had a little trouble starting Charulata first time around), my player also doesn't load Slacker any further than the C logo on a black screen.

Considering my player plays everything else fine, I can't really justify buying a whole new player for just one bloody disc. It's pretty annoying though. The longer I can't play it, the more I want to watch it lol

Inland Empire has to be my favourite Lynch film, although a lot hated it.

I think its incredible, the acting was phenomenal and Laura Dern was PERFECT and at times she was so lost on her characters I didn't even recognise her at times. I adore the story as well and love how he included The Rabbits shorts throughout the film - so mysterious and tragic.

Absolultey love it.

Oh! and superb score and I love the end of the film during the credits which celebrates all his characters and films throughout his career !

Kind of a relief to find someone else with my player experiencing the same problem. I initially thought it was a faulty disc and got a second copy to try and see. Exact same thing happened so I assure you, it's the player having trouble. Not the disc.

Apparently there was a different brand BD player from Big W (can't remember the name) that plays it fine. Apparently said player uses the exact same internal equipment as the Soniq B100 too which makes it all the more weird. Not going to lie, I'm kind of considering getting a new player if one more brand new, non-faulty Region A disc doesn't load for me.

For the record, I've also upgraded the firmware on my Soniq B100 and it doesn't affect the region changing capability (which is good news as some firmware updates ruin that) but unfortunately it also did nothing to fix the problem loading Slacker. If you happen to find a way to play it on that player, I'd appreciate if you let me know. I'll do the same for you of course (however, sadly, don't expect any cures short of buying a new player).

I'll leave it at that and stop clogging up this thread with my long messages. This is more of an Aussie thread conversation.

My Slacker disc didn't work until I upgraded my firmware. I even tried two different copies of the film and neither worked until that was done. Now it plays with no issue.

Concerning Inland Empire, if you end up getting the region free blu (there's a nice german box set you can regularly pick up for around $25 shipped with the exact 3 films being discussed), make sure you also seek out the Absurda 2-disc DVD. The 2nd disc has all the bonus content including over an hour of deleted footage that is not on the blu.

There's a valid reason. That's what I mean by tame, as I was expecting a lot worse than what actually happened in the film. I have issues watching these things, but have no problems reading them 9 times out of 10. Seeing the stuff on the screen just makes it more realistic than simply reading about them.

I was at a party last night, and we started talking about film, and we went from b-movies like Lesbian Vampire Killers, to Eating Raoul and John Waters, onto Caligula, Salo, and Antichrist, and then we ended up playing Cards Against Humanity. It was an interesting discussion, because the common theme linking the films together seemed to be the concept of shock factor, and the merit of placing disturbing ideas/images into a film.
What is your opinion on In the Realm of the Senses?

No, but it includes a segment where Lynch shows you how to make a quinoa dinner (his coffee maker looks incredible). The deleted scenes are edited and put together as a new piece and some of it is just as strong as the film. It's definitely worth picking up.

I know the plot, but I admittedly have yet to watch the film. Hasn't been a priority for me.

Ah okay. For me personally, the repetitive nature of the film significantly diminished its minimal redeeming qualities.

Still, if you end up getting around to it, let me know how you like it.

Well, so much for my idea of watching in Spine # order. I noticed some of the dreaded bronzing on my Howards End Blu-ray, so I'm going to watch it to check it out. My other titles aren't showing the issue, so I'll resume spine order once I verify my disc is ok.

I suppose it's fitting to watch Howards End now, as I just finished watching the latest episode of Downton Abbey on ITV's web player, and there are a lot of similarities (other than the time period, at least for the first few seasons of Downton) between Howards End and Downton Abbey.

I just realized that Red River is the only Howard Hawks movie in the collection. How is this possible?

I'm going to assume that most of the rights to his films are with Paramount and Warner Bros.

Cheers for that. Had a hunch it was the player, just wanted to be sure.

I won't bother buying another cheapy player just to play Slacker. When the days comes, an Oppo will be the way I go.

Thanks for your input.

I meant available on Region A. Since Criterion only releases on Region A, I meant an upcoming Criterion release would explain the lack of those titles in North America.

Certainly a goodly percentage of them are with Warner, with a handful being with Paramount. But a lot of them are with Fox, Universal, or Sony. Some of his top films with those studios would be:

Universal: Scarface
Columbia: Only Angels Have Wings, His Girl Friday
Fox: I Was a Male War Bride, Monkey Business, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

GFP was already released on Blu by Fox, and I would suspect that Fox would want to hold onto Monkey Business in case they want to do another Marilyn Monroe set. But I can see Fox licensing out War Bride, and the others listed above wouldn't be out of the question.

(I might've thought that Sony would want to keep His Girl Friday in house, but then they were willing to license It Happened One Night to Criterion, so I no longer try to figure out Sony's game plan in this regard.)
