It's always a good idea to now and then check to see if there's a firmware update for your player. I haven't been having any issues with my player (except for one minor issue that's probably not the player's fault), but I hadn't updated the firmware in almost four years. I checked, and I was a couple of versions behind, so this morning I downloaded the update, burned it to a CD, and updated. I've been occupied all day, so I haven't checked to see if it's helped with anything obvious (like the time taken to load a disc).

I'm a firmware version behind, but then, Panasonic also hasn't issued a firmware update for my player since that update in 2012.

Any similar films to the Trilogy of Life collection? Never seen a Pasolini, but I'm tempted to blind-buy (especially considering it's fairly cheap at Blowitoutahere).

Not sure how to respond. I think Ali is terrific, and would make a great blind buy. I've not seen Sundays and Cybèle, but plan to get it at some point myself, so...

Both are great, but S&C is up there with the best blind buys I've made all year.

That being said, I'm apprehensive about recommending anything to someone who is clearly in financial difficulty at the moment! Step away from eBay Polaroid!

Hmm, I can't find it now, but the live feed became a static video of the whole event once the event had finished. I keepvidded it from youtube, but can't seem to find it anymore.

I believe His Girl Friday is in public domain but the play it's based off "The Front Page" is copyrighted until 2024. From what I'm reading a release of the film must include permission from those who own rights to the play.

Sundays and Cybele is a wonderful and devastating film. It's one of the better blind buys that I have made in recent memory. The black-and-white images and cinematography are amazing.

Copyright is a funny thing, and a confusing one, as some things that fell into the Public Domain fell back into copyright later on, due to technicalities of one sort or another (like, as you point out, copyright on the source material).

His Girl Friday did become P.D. at one point -- I picked up a Laserlight DVD of it at the time. But Sony later brought out their own edition that was superior to any of the P.D. releases as it was mastered from their archival elements.

Rights to The Front Page aside, even if Criterion was legally allowed to release the film on Blu-ray, they wouldn't be allowed to use the OCN (or whatever elements Sony still has in the vault) without permission from Sony. Instead, they'd have to go through all the trouble of doing their own restoration from inferior P.D. prints in order to have something worth releasing on Blu-ray. There'd be no point to doing anything that didn't involve some contractual arrangement with Sony, especially if Criterion didn't want to piss off Sony by going around them.

That's where Criterion should consult Grover Crisp and he could maybe make it happen.

I wouldn't mind Billy Wilder's THE FRONT PAGE on blu-ray either. It's not as good as HIS GIRL FRIDAY but it has Lemmon and Matthau.

Wilder's The Front Page pales in comparison to the 1931 version as well. After seeing the original and His Girl Friday, you have to wonder why he thought another re-make was necessary.

While I agree that the 1931 version is better than Wilder's, I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say that the latter "pales in comparison" to the former.

But hey, it could've been worse; it could've been Switching Channels.

Both are great, for me Ali is a bit better overall, if you have Hulu you can watch Ali, but i think its not on HD.

For Hulu you will need something like getflix, it's the cheaper i have found, with that you can change the region of your netflix too.

It's worth watching for the scene where Matthau (Posing as Otto Fishbine) calls Lemmon's character an exhibitionist.
