Does anyone else have the Demy set?

I've gotten through Lola and Bay of Angels so far and enjoyed them both. Although, I do think Claude Mann was miscast in the latter. He looks like a boy next to Jeanne Moreau. Still an excellent film!

4. The Big Chill
5. Sundays and Cybele

Some of these releases I like a lot because of the supplemental features. For example, Risi's conversation, now Krüger's fantastic interview, etc.

The only reason I've excluded the likes of La Dolce Vita, Jules and Jim, and The Great Beauty is because I already had them earlier. But Criterion's releases are outstanding, really. (The Great Beauty, I think, is their most beautifully designed package as well).

Thanks for the peek into your current list!

It's certainly an interesting contrast with all the other MoC steelbooks which are readily available and cheap. I have them all except for a couple (Serpico, that centipede thing) and they are top quality

Absolutely!

Growing up, my dad would always tell me about how seeing 2001 at the NY World's Fair when he was a kid was an amazing experience. I had never seen the movie, but his descriptions of the monolith, the monkeys and spaceships were intriguing. When I was in 7th grade, he took me out of school for one day just so we could go to the Northampton Film Festival in MA to see a screening of 2001. Douglas Trumbull did a pre-screening Q and A and then the film was shown on a giant screen with the Dolby sound cranked all the way up. I can still remember FEELING the hiss of the breathing in the film. Definitely one of the most magical cinematic experiences I have ever had!

I apologize if that has been addressed at some point, but I don't have internet at home anymore and rarely get to check this board...

Has anyone received their Criterion replacement discs yet? I sent mine in the day the replacement program was announced.

Well, I fear Salò.

Should I face my fears like The Great Owl did and suffer the consequences or avoid being traumatized and damaged for life?

This is the great question in life.
The problem is that you can't "unsee" things, and they can be locked in your psyche, so you're wise to be cautious.

I think that was the intended effect. I just checked IMDB and he would have been 22 and she 35 in the release year. I liked it ok, but overall felt mildly disappointed.
[Show spoiler]The movie ends too abruptly and, for me, left me nothing to think about.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, however, blew me away. was wonderful! and looks incredible in 1080p

I've seen 2001 twice at the cinema - the first time was in 1979 when I was a student. I skipped an invite to the Tramps 'n' Tarts bash to see the film (no regrets) - showing in what was in those days the main cinema in Aberdeen, the late lamented Capitol theatre, a glorious art deco palace which was shockingly destroyed recently to make way for yet another anonymous hotel. (It was also the site of my first rock concert, September 1976, Hawkwind on their legendary Atomhenge tour... happy days!).

Needless to say, it was an amazing experience; the next time was at our local arthouse cinema, the Belmont, where it will be showing this time round. I just hope they put it on their biggest screen!

Drifting off topic somewhat, going to see Le jour se leve there tonight, and Zabriskie Point next month

How odd, since the New York world's fair was in 1964. He must be remembering something else

That's as far as I've gotten so far. I've seen two others in the set before, but I'm eager to revisit them with these restorations.

You just need to drink like 12 beers before starting the movie, then keep drinking while watching

I wonder if that would make the film better or worse.

I'm not sure, since I was pretty wasted when I saw it 20+ years ago, and I barely remember it. But, like some others, I really don't have any interest in seeing again.

It's exciting to see so much 2001/Days Of Fear And Wonder chat in here. I was fortunate enough to be given a grant from the BFI to programme a strand myself. I've put together a very diverse programme that sees a 35mm print of Stalker sat next to Howard The Duck, amongst others. We too have 2001, on December 7th.

Leeds isn't too far for you, I'd very much recommend going to this screening in the historic Victoria Hall at Leeds Town Hall.

The cinema screen is bigger than the one pictured below.

There is a drug for this -- Versed. It's used in medical procedures where they want you somewhat conscious but unable to form memories.
