Yeah, right now my country is under an Islamic terrorist attack, and all military personnel across the country are at risk, at least according to the media. The media is assuming that the guys shooting soldiers on Parliament Hill are all dark-skinned Islamic followers. The guy who ran down soldiers in his car to kill them the other day was a White Islamic convert. Ergo, all of Islam is now out to get us, and several normally sane and rational people are screaming we need to bring back the internment camps for anyone who's Muslim.

Yay for xenophobia, racism, paranoia, and speculation. This is a serious issue, yet the media is making it worse, not better.

Sorry for going off topic, but we can sorta link it back to the themes addressed in Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, as the film also examines racism and xenophobia, although there's no terrorism aspect.

In some small way, it's comforting to know that the US news media isn't the only one inciting fear and paranoia.

I, too, will be mailing my Howards End disc in the near future. I just need to finish going through a few more reportedly problematic discs so that I can send them all at once. Unfortunately cheesy halloween films are taking priority.

Hell...I'm still waiting for my Eraserhead disc to arrive. I received the gift certificate last week but my disc is still not in.

I contacted my local indie theater about 2001: A Space Odyssey and they said we've had the 4k res and get this, they showed the movie about 2 years ago. UGH! I can't believe I missed it!

Yeah, the two stories are very similar.

Well, except for one being a hoax and the other, you know, not being a hoax.

But other than that...

The Oxford comma addict in me shudders every time I write, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."

This is how the title appears in the opening credits, though, and it's the only coherent way to type the title in a post without making it look as though one is mentioning multiple films.

Can someone direct me to a concise place I can go that will show me:

- What Criterion titles are affected by this browning thing
- How to tell if my discs are affected
- What Criterion wants me to do to fix it if they are

That info would be, like, awesome.

Well, Harper is basically diet GWB with aspartame. We've had two attacks on military personnel in the past few days, so it's a big deal. Blowing up and claiming every Arab/Muslim/foreigner/non-white/non-christian is going to kill everyone in the country, starting with the military, is not helping. We do not know all the facts yet, but the media and Joe Public seem to think this is what is going on. Hell, this has made international news at this point, and several of my American friends are telling us to stop, as this is their thing, and Canada is a nice, safe, friendly country and things like this don't happen here. They said the same thing back in the summer when the guy in Moncton, NB was picking off RCMP officers.

But, I'm getting too political, and unless the rules have changed since I last posted, political talk is usually verboten, hence me trying to get an Ali: Fear Eats the Soul discussion going in the guise of film talk and not politics.

I still need to check Pierrot le Fou. I watched The Seventh Seal and M back at the beginning of September, and they were both fine. I'm only going by titles on Criterion's approved replacement list. I have some of the others people have issues with, but Criterion hasn't said they'd replace those.

I'm not shipping mine until November because that's when my parents are going on their trip. It's about 14 bucks cheaper to ship my disc from Portsmouth/Newington than it is to ship from Nova Scotia.

This may not exactly be your idea of "concise", but the affected titles are listed here in this thread.

The original poster makes a good effort to update the first post, so that's all good.

http://www.criterion.com/current/pos...efective-discs - This is what Criterion has come out with. There are other titles people on this forum have issues, with, but they aren't on Criterion's list. I assume that the OOP titles will be replaced if they are on the list.

To tell, you need to try to play the discs. You cannot judge on colour changes alone.

Damn, whatever happened to that 'one big happy NAFTA family' thing?

Maybe it was the like metric system. We played with it for a couple minutes and then a squirrel ran by or something.

Nope, it was like the series finale of St. Elsewhere.

That's the "Bronzegate" thread referred to earlier. Sticking to just the first post (and any other relevant post that it links to) will be sufficient. The other 1600 or so posts in the thread you can pretty much skip.

It's a disservice to say the first post of that thread is misinformation. You may not get the specific info you're looking for, like where does the skipping occur, but the rest of the post is solid. Over on the Criterion forum, that thread was cited as an example of something that forum ought to be doing. As it involved considerable effort on the part of the OP, the OP deserves our thanks, IMHO.

I was referring to the rest of the thread, with the talk of class action lawsuits, boycotting Criterion, OOP titles aren't going to be replaced, OOP titles will be replaced with another Criterion, Criterion is doing nothing, some of the issues aren't due to bronzing (someone said the fluke in Howards End skipping 10 minutes was a separate, unrelated issue), and all discolouration = bad disc, ur screwed dudes! I was looking more for confirmation about the OOP titles, and I'm assuming that since Criterion has added them to their list, they are replacing them.

Weird, I came in and thought at first I had entered the wrong thread. I see it's just a question of cross pollination.

Watching 2001:ASO on a large screen from a 70mm print is a dream that has yet to be realised. A while ago they screened it at the EYE museum here in Amsterdam during a Kubrick retrospective, but they butchered it. No sound for the first 10 minutes and they didn't matte the screen properly. It definitely wasn't a big screen or 70mm print. I asked for my money back and told them I was very disappointed (or words to that effect).

The cinema screen is bigger than the one pictured below.

Fantastic place - in the 80s I lived in Lancashire but travelled the forty miles over the Pennines most Saturday nights for the International Concert Season in Leeds Town Hall. It has a great acoustic, especially for stuff like Bruckner. So many memorable concerts. May have to send a friend for that 2001 screening!

Thoughts on the Tati set? I own and love Playtime but haven't seen his other films. The set obviously seems extremely thorough with a lot of interesting extras, in addition to the films. The set can be had for about $45 with the 20% coupon during the sale, which is a pretty phenomenal price. I plan on keeping the original Playtime due to the superior color transfer.

So, for someone who loves Playtime, is it safe to assume I'll enjoy the other films too? Thanks for any feedback.

The rest of thread is not 'primarily fear mongering' either though. For the most part posters to that thread have been pretty measured and responsible.

For instance, all the talk of class action lawsuits, what little there was, came from one poster who was clearly trolling from his/her first post.
