I'm not crazy about all his films - I like 12 Monkeys and, yes, Jabberwocky - but there are interesting things in all of his films, even the ones that really don't work for me. Often the stories behind his films - his struggles to make them - are more interesting than the films themselves.

But he's a very unique film-maker and even at his advanced age, he's always trying to do new things so I'm glad he's around.

And we can't undervalue his contribution to Monty Python either. Imagine their stuff without his input. So yeah, I'd say I'm a fan generally.

Without having one in front of me right now, I know they're slim cases, but are they the 5mm or 7mm thick cases? I also don't recall if Criterion gets their slim DVD cases from Scanavo like their other cases. Casetopia sells the replacement Scanavo cases for Criterion's standard DVDs and blu-rays, and it looks like they have a 7mm thick DVD case, but I don't recall which one Criterion uses. If not, I'm sure you can find another place online that sells a 5mm thick clear DVD case.

You're kind of in luck currently all BLUs and DVDs are 30% off in store. It isn't the 50% off sale price but it is a nice discount.

I couldn't hold out for the sale I grabbed this and The Innocents Tuesday.

I've never been hugely enthusiastic about Terry Gilliam.

I feel the same way about Terry Gilliam's films that I feel about Tim Burton's films. I understand what the directors are trying to convey, but the forced artificiality of the set designs and the mannerisms of the characters always turn me off. There's a quirkiness to the whole setup that just does not resonate, even if the story itself is compelling. Come to think of it, I've never warmed up to Wes Anderson's films for similar reasons.

I did see Brazil on a big theater screen when I was in college, and, although the immensity of the production came across well in that regard, the movie as a whole did not quicken my pulse.

I might possibly buy the upcoming Blu-ray of Time Bandits simply for its sheer 1980s nostalgic appeal, but I will not pay full price.

FYI. TCM is showing a bunch of horror this week and next. Uninvited and The Innocents were on last night.

It looks as though the 30% Off sale is good through November 3, so that means that I'll be purchasing The Vanishing on day one if I can make it out to one of the stores. That movie will probably be my Halloween night film of choice this year. I cannot wait to see it with the improved picture quality over my previous DVD edition.

I could not be any less interested in taking the time it would require to respond to your questions.

I hear that. The $20.15 price that it drops to with member discount and 20% off coupon sitting in my email isn't providing much of an argument for waiting for the November sale.

Switching gears to Ozu, has anyone ever come across this before?

Yeah, I was going to wait for the November sale, but just yesterday I got two "20% off one item" coupons in the (snail)mail, so I figure I might as well use them in the next couple of weeks. Between the 30% off sale + 10% member's discount + the 20% off coupon(s), it's effectively 50% off.

Is there a thread that tries and predicts what the next OOP criterion bluray will be? Or has it been mention before in this thread. Any guesses?

this is the thread. Just wait until it gets close to announcement day. I always avoid it for a few days around this time!

If there is any suspicion it will be in this thread, but most of the times if not all, there is no way to predict it, there have been times that Criterion posts a message announcing the titles that go OOP but not always.

I believe the previous poster refers to the prediction of future releases.

Thumbs down

I ordered Scanners on Oct 9 from Criterion and still nothing.

In comparison, on Oct 13 I ordered a title from Arrow and received it on Oct 20!

Why a title can get to me from the UK in less than half the time from the U.S. I don't know....

*sigh*

Has nobody else noticed that the retail price for Criterion's design book is $100? Or am I just like, really tight and consider that a lot of money? Lol

It's not like I know for sure what they're offering, but it's only 300 pages... They must've included some seriously juicy stuff or they think Criterion fans are incredibly weak willed.

I really look forward to reading reviews for it to see if it's actually worth that kind of price.

Thanks. I haven't seen Village of The Damned (1961) in awhile. It featured that creepy kid who played Myles from the The Innocents as playing the leader of the alien brood.

I haven't seen the dimensions of the book, but that price seems pretty in line for full retail of a coffee table type book. If it helps, it was only $73 yesterday so there is room for movement on the actual selling price.

Not to mention if you're willing to wait and roll the dice, books like this frequently end up at close out type bookstores for $10-$15.

I'm curious about the "gallery of every Criterion cover since the collection's first laserdisc in 1984". I wonder how complete that will really be (I.e. alternate covers for multiple releases of the same film)?
