It's not like I know for sure what they're offering, but it's only 300 pages... They must've included some seriously juicy stuff or they think Criterion fans are incredibly weak willed.

I really look forward to reading reviews for it to see if it's actually worth that kind of price.
It's not outrageous for art books, but it's too rich for my blood.

I'm guessing that it's very high-quality color printing on really good paper stock. It probably also has a relatively small press run. Both of these things would likely drive the price up.

I'm curious about the "gallery of every Criterion cover since the collection's first laserdisc in 1984". I wonder how complete that will really be (I.e. alternate covers for multiple releases of the same film)?
I'd be inclined to believe that they won't include multiple covers of, say, Citizen Kane or King Kong when the cover photo stays the same across the separate printings, and it's just the basic color scheme of the jacket that changes. But who knows?

I do suspect that they'll include both covers for Taxi Driver, though.

You should contact Criterion by email. I had that happen to me with Seven Samurai. Although, I suspect someone had pilfered it from my door.

Criterion gladly replaced it.

I do by a lot of art books. That is kind of on the high end for the kind of book it is. I've paid significantly more for art books, but there was usually something exceptional or limited about them. I'm thinking the price will drop more, but don't quote me on that.

If it makes you feel any better, I am still waiting for my Eraserhead replacement disc which, I suspect, was shipped out on Wednesday, October 15, or Thursday, October 16, as that is when I received my $10 gift certificate e-mail.

It's not a lot of money for a book like that. Tashen and other companies put out art/poster books that regularly sell for $100 or more.

Criterion needs to release Josef von Sternberg's Crime and Punishment starring Peter Lorre on Bluray. I dont know how Criterion do their acquisitions but I heard Sony gots the rights to that film. It was only release on DVD overseas in France I think. It would be super sweet if they released a set under the Eclipse title of forgotten Sternberg films because he is a very important director that more people should be aware of.

Yes they do, but nearly all of those $$$ books that Taschen sells are either oversized, limited editions, or collector's editions.

Yes, A Safe Place is the worst film in the Criterion Collection by unanimous vote.

All blu-rays are currently on sale in store for 30% off. The store pick up stuff always defaults to list price. It does the same thing during the 50% off sales.

I called my store to be sure, and the person in the movie dept quoted the price prior to the 30% sale and member's discount (10%) as 40.00. He probably meant 39.99, so that comes out to about 24.00 for La Dolce Vita. He said they won't accept a further 20% off coupon at this particular store, but you know the saying, YMMV. I think I'll just wait for their Criterion sale in November.

Barnes and Noble is notoriously ymmv. That being said, I used a 20% today to get the Killing Fields digibook for $14. The fine print of the coupon clearly indicates you can use it.

Yup, the one near my house (Glendale, CA) is now hip to the coupon stacking thing, and they didn't accept more then one coupon during their last Criterion sale. I just called the West L.A. store and their employee said they'll will accept a coupon on top of the 30 + 10% sale. So, that would be about 16.00 for La Dolce Vita...Score!

Because you bought American. I 9/10, my American purchases take forever because Customs hates it. Yet, my UK stuff is only a day or two behind anything I order in Canada.

I'm sure several folks will argue Tiny Furniture is worse. I'm far from being a Lena Dunham fan, but, when Tiny Furniture first came out, this thread became really gross and nasty. Very sexist and in the case of some posters, misogynistic. Tiny Furniture, for me, was ok. Worth a watch, but not, OMFG I must own this so I can watch it again and again, but it, and Lena Dunham, certainly do not deserve a lot of the misogynistic crap tossed at it. It's not a good film, but, it's still better than A Safe Place, which, unfortunately, I'm going to have to watch again because I decided to watch all my Criterions in Spine order, as much as possible. I'll probably end up posting to this thread or reading a novel or two on my Kobo while I watch it, which still technically counts?

I am also waiting for my "Eraserhead" replacement. Got my e-mail gift certificate on last Wednesday, the 15th. Hoping it's there when I go to pick the mail up tonight.
